The Music Store. Also known as the social gathering place for musicians to gather at, check out the latest musical gear, purchase their goods such as guitars, drums, strings, and sticks. But the traditional music store is much more than that. Its a locale where musicians both new and seasoned can get together and share their chops, collect new ideas, and exchange phone numbers and email addresses. It's where bands are created. But with the recent announcement of the closing of one of the largest music store chains in the Country, the selection of choices has diminished somewhat. But has it? We still have across the nation and the world, the traditional mom and pop music stores, still opening their doors every day, competing against the online internet based music retailers.

Jack Sharkey and Bob Bender bring another special edition of the "Between The Notes" series here on The Business Side of Music, discussing the demise of the traditional big box music stores, and how its now more important than ever for today's musician to seek out and put their hard earned cash into the local music retail establishments when purchasing new music gear.

Celebrating his 30th anniversary in the music industry with his band “The Nadas”, singer/songwriter, and founding member Jason Walsmith joins us in the studio to talk about his career. Jason has spent his adult life as a career musician, storyteller, photographer, traveler, and adventurer.

The celebrated folk-Americana act The Nadas have amassed a loyal and dedicated following over the past three decades for their engaging live shows and distinctive 70s-meets-90s sound. Blending twangy, Stones-era “country honk” with raw, alt-rock energy and wistful, folk-leaning melodies, their music is as alive as it is authentic. Over 30 years of making music together, The Nadas have shared the stage with The Beach Boys, Bon Jovi, Big Head Todd and Barenaked Ladies, been inducted into the Iowa Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame, sold over 300,000 albums (even in a time when you can’t buy a CD player), earned praise from a wide range of major publications, and written the theme song for their hometown—twice.

As one of 39 kids of the world famous Osmond family (who sold over 100 million records), our guest Nathan Osmond grew up on the set of his uncles TV Show during their heyday. He himself went on to form another generation of Osmond singers, who toured with such 90’s acts as New Kids On The Block, Naughty By Nature, and Colour Me Badd. The son of Alan Osmond, he and his brothers moved to Branson Missouri, where they performed at the Osmond Family Theater. While there, Nathan became influenced by Country Music.

Nathan shares his life story, the ups and downs, his performance in the Tim Rice and music Andrew Lloyd Webber’s production of “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat”, and wound up in Nashville writing with the likes of Dean Sams (“Lonestar”) Steve Dorf, and Tony Asher. He shares what it took for him to be successful in the music business without relying on the good name of his family but at the same time seeking advice from his uncle and aunt, Donny and Marie Osmond to learn more aspects of the business end of the music industry.

Meet Dave Lenahan. He started out in the music business by being a DJ at WKSU radio on the campus of Kent State University, doing afternoon drive time jazz. He went on to work at Country Station WUBE in Cincinnati OH, but in short order he determined that he was destined to become a hit songwriter. We discuss the anatomy of the song, how to put one together, and what separates a tune from a hit.

Dave currently resides in Nashville TN, writes songs for a living, and hosts the podcast “Songwriter Connection” which has released more than 150 episodes on the exploration of songwriting.

#312 - Touring Career Workshop

Unless you work for a major corporation within the music industry, and are blessed to have a great benefits package, you must fend for yourself in order to provide the tools needed to get by in life: health insurance, retirement plans, and the general skills to run your own business. Make no mistake about it, if you are a freelance technician in the touring business – you ARE your own business. This is where the vision of the Touring Career Workshop comes to life: a simple workshop where a lot of the success tools needed are presented by experts in each of their respective fields.

One of the resources that Touring Career Workshop provides is dealing with mental health. Their “All Access Online” program provides mental health counseling with a designated counselor either online, or out on the road depending on the conditions, giving a chance for touring professionals to discuss their difficult moments and work through those challenges that arise, whether it be time away from home on the road, or those day to day life situations that sometimes pop up. Executive Director Chris Lisle, along with special guest co-host Sharon Lee who is the CEO of High Road Trucking, join us in the studio to explain how these, and other services and opportunities are available to those who work in the music touring industry.

The Touring Career Workshop is a free annual event created by industry veterans Chris Lisle and Erik Parker, designed to serve and educate their colleagues in the touring music industry. The inaugural TCW was held in November 2011 at Belmont University, and was attended by over fifty industry professionals. In the past several years well hundreds of touring industry people have attended their events. TCW is an official IRS 501c3 non profit.

Record Store Day was conceived in 2007 at a gathering of independent record store owners and employees as a way to celebrate and spread the word about the unique culture surrounding the nearly 1400 independently-owned record stores in the US and thousands of similar stores internationally. The first Record Store Day took place on April 19, 2008. Today, 17 years later, Record Store Day is celebrated at independently-owned brick-and-mortar record stores around the world.

On this special edition episode of The Business Side of Music, frequent guest, and music industry veteran Jack Sharkey, explains how Music Store Day came about, its significance in the music business, and how it benefits not only the brick and mortar record stores, but also the independent artist and their artistry. #310 - Making It Big One Gig At A Time

Stone Senate has been called “a heavier version of Lynyrd Skynyrd, crossed with The Allman Brothers Band”. While being mentioned in such heady company is flattering, it is important to note Stone Senate is most definitely not a retro act. They are taking what came naturally from their collective influences a step further and making a name for themselves in the world of modern country rock.

The band is fronted by vocalist/ guitarist Clint Woolsey’s smoldering, soulful vocals and unmistakable stage presence. “It’s the struggle between good and evil set in a world I know very well,” he says. “It follows a character who believed one path was her destiny, only to find out where she was really meant to be all along.”

Born and raised in El Paso, TX, Phillip discovered music through his parents. Beyond spinning classics by Led Zeppelin and Bob Dylan, mom even played Howard Stern on their drive to school. Predestining a future in the business, she also brought Phillip to his first concert — U2 and Public Enemy at the Sun Bowl. Not to mention, he caught Robert Plant & Jimmy Page and Alan Jackson when they rolled through town. However, a Pink Floyd gig would be the point of no return for him. After a stint working in the food service industry in San Antonio, he attended and graduated from Full Sail University in Orlando FL where he also worked his first production gigs. Eventually, he landed his “dream job” at production powerhouse Clair Global. Coming full circle, his first assignment placed him on a jaunt with Guns N’ Roses in 2010. He hit the road for the better part of the next decade. Clients included Alicia Keys, The Scorpions, Justin Bieber, Florida Georgia Line, Paul Simon, Carrie Underwood, and Queen & Adam Lambert, to name a few. At the onset of the Global Pandemic, the business shutdown, and Phillip found himself at home in Nashville, where he found himself beginning the journey as an author.
