The Dos & Don'ts To Virtual Layoffs: The Better Way

1h 1m · Published 13 Dec 10:00

Is there really a better way to lay off team members? No one gets into business ownership inspired by the firing of employees. It is typically for financial freedom, for the impact they can make, the legacy building or even the ability to control your own schedule. The world has been learning a lesson in empathy and leadership through CEO Vishal Garg's approach to laying off 900 employees. Has a lack of interpersonal interaction resulted to a lack of care and understanding or is this just due to a lack of drive for leaders wanting to develop regularly?

While layoffs cannot be prevented, our approach to such a sensitive matter can be handled with sensitivity for those affected.  Let's discuss if there is a better way to handle layoffs and hard conversations.

Grab your notepads and note taking materials and let's get into today's topic.

Stagnation or Transformation: Which Phase Are You In?

28m · Published 29 Nov 10:00

Charles Darwin said, "It is not the strongest or the most intelligent who will survive but those who can best manage change." I am in a season transition as a leader in my business and within my organization.  I accept and embrace the change because I know it will mean better on the other side but for some, change is uncomfortable or change is something you do not want but NEED.  If change is not embraced, it will mean loss in productivity, personnel and even profit.

Today we will discuss 3 ways to plan for change and what changes are upcoming for me in this season of transition.

How Do You Lead Through Heartbreak, Grief & Loss?

49m · Published 30 Aug 08:00

This episode is dedicated to my nephew, Nathaniel Timothy Thornhill 1993-2021

My family was hit with an unexpected loss and like many leaders, you still have a responsibility to the organizations and businesses you manage daily so you try to juggle both.  In reality, taking time away to focus on self and family.  I didn't realize I was already storm proofed which allowed me to be able to take time away to focus on what was important at this time of grieving.

Feeling guilty when stepping away should never be something we experience as leaders but the sad reality is many of us feel that way or use work as an escape.  True resiliency looks different that what many of us are doing. Let's discuss what you can do to prepare for the storms that all leaders will face so we begin to take the time we need to heal, grow, mourn and come back stronger than before.

Did You Know Leaders Have A Bias Towards High Performers?

52m · Published 16 Aug 08:00

All leaders have some type of bias!! That is a fact.

It's important that leaders recognize that putting the work in to recognize what that bias is while also seeking the education to unlearn incorrect information and learn CORRECT information is HIGHLY important. That is because how we view the world dictates how we see ourselves and others which also influences our decision- making.  That then trickles down to how we lead in organizations and companies.

A bias we MUST be aware of is for high-performing team members. Many times they are offered more work, more responsibility and more of the load while obtaining less grace and less understanding.

Are Your Organizational Rules Are Outdated? Case Study: Simone Biles

51m · Published 26 Jul 10:56

As we wrap up the conversation regarding assessing organizational rules, we review another high performer, Simone Biles. Biles is a 4x Olympic gold medalist and has won 19 world championships who continues to push herself to excel further.  That drive has resulted in her trying and landed maneuvers that no one has done before. The questions began when she was scored lower than expected. While judges represented by the International Gymnastics Federation (IGF) state its due to multiple factors to include safety issues, there are questions regarding the scoring Biles received.

Should high performers be judged harsher than others? If a high performer is striving to do more and is doing what's expected to be rated higher than others, should they not be? Are we seeing high performing bias that results in unfair treatment of certain groups of individuals?

Are Your Organizational Rules Are Outdated? Case Study: Sha' Carri Richardson

34m · Published 19 Jul 08:00

Sha' Carri Richardson has been coined the fastest woman in the world but lost the opportunity to be a part of the U.S. Olympic team.  This was due to a failed drug test that identified she utilized marijuana which she admitted she used to cope after navigating the loss of her mother and the stress of her role as an athlete.  This caused a lot of stir as some individuals believe  this rule is outdated while some believe her suspension was warranted.

What happens when your high-performing and top-producing team member breaks a rule? Do you hold them accountable or do you reconsider the rules for them? If you do reconsider the rules, why are you willing to change the rules now? Is it because they are a top producing team member? Would you give the same consideration for a "average" performer?
