Minepreneur with Michael Hartley: How does he marry something boring with technology to drive cultural shift?

1h 16m · Published 18 Oct 20:00

I was initially intrigued by Michael’s approach towards mining safety management using data analytics, as so many start-ups are trying to sell technologies that improve productivity or maintenance performance. After the initial conversation with Michale, I could completely understand why he left his well-paying corporate job to start Minetell: he’s not just selling a product or service, but he’s creating a movement of changing the safety culture in the mining industry. Michael’s approach towards safety focuses on material risk management: what are the material risks facing the organization and how effective are the controls in place? While cutting fingers on the job is still a safety hazard mining companies need to manage, things that contribute to a fatal accident or catastrophic environmental breach rightly deserve much more attention. After some trial and error, Michael finally found the right partners that can help him marry safety and technology together to provide clients with the ability to inform and intervene. While still early in his venture, Michale and his partners have managed to maintain positive cash flow. “We try to create a pull scenario. I think pushing something like this on to those who, frankly, aren’t ready to receive it is a failed strategy.  So that's what we do - we focus on the services up front to help them understand the context of their business; help give them the capabilities to know what to measure and then at that point, when they say, well how could we possibly do this, we simply don't have the capacity, well then this is where we have that technology conversation.”
