Music On Your Own Terms 120 - Kostas Sampanis - Atumune In The Mountains

This episode I am joined by Greek guitarist, Kostas Sampanis, to talk about his newly released EP, Autumne. We discuss the conception of the album, which Kostas reveals is dedicated to his late grandmother, something that I really connect to on a deep emotional level, as my grandmother was very special to me as well. In addition to his EP, we also talk about Kostas' philosophies on teaching music theory and technique which is his primary source of income. Finally Kostas shares his recent experience with cancer and how music helped his time in hospital to endure the pain he was in. Once again I want to thank my friend Ria from One Woman Company for turning me on to another fantastic artist, I was absolutely blown away by Kostas' music and playing as soon as I heard it. Make sure you subscribe to Kostas' Youtube channel to check out some really tasty jams and covers.

Music On Your Own Terms 119 "Austin Zhang - Bravely Discovering The Sounds Of NYC"

45m · Published 04 May 11:00

Music On Your Own Terms 119 - Austin Zhang - Bravely Discovering The Sounds Of NYC

In this episode I talk to Austin Zhang, a Texas native that moved to NYC to go to college, and immerse himself in the Jazz scene. We hear about Austin's history in music with guitar, then switching to saxophone and being named number one at the Texas All State Jazz competition, and subsequently being invited to play gigs in Deep Ellum, all while still in high school. We also hear about the entrepreneurial drive that most likely stemmed from seeing his parent's property investments, an experience which led him to create a production company that offers a digital venue helping local jazz artists make a living from paid streaming concerts, and help expose NY jazz to the world. Austin's story is extremely inspiring in terms of musical drive and ability, but also successfully pairing that with his business sense and entrepreneurial spirit. I look forward to what Austin will accomplish in the future!

Joining me this episode is the absolute legend John Otway! John has had a career in music spanning 50 years, playing to 20,000 people in his home town of Aylesbury, and appearing on The Old Grey Whistle Test with Bob Harris, Top Of The Pops and other notable UK TV shows. John talks about his history of attempting to recreate the hit he had in the 70s, utilizing his extremely loyal fan-base as a true pioneer of crowdfunding. Music On Your Own Terms 115 "Juha Ruokangas/Ruokangas Guitars - What If?"

1h 45m · Published 13 Apr 11:00

Music On Your Own Terms 115 - Juha Ruokangas/Ruokangas Guitars - What If?

It is with great pleasure and gratitude that I present my conversation with Mr. Juha Ruokangas, of Ruokangas Guitars, Finnish luthier, innovator and life coach! Regular listeners will remember my episode with Mika Tyyskä (Mr Fastfinger) all the way back in episode 9, who not only play's Juha's instruments, is a good friend, but also created a film about the making of a Mr Fastfinger signature guitar (with Sensai's help of course). Juha shares his journey from discovering Iron Maiden and Jimmy Page, learning to both play guitar and dismantling his very first instrument, all the way to finding his calling as a luthier from a very helpful lady at the unemployment office. We hear how Juha has continued to push innovations from being at the forefront of early websites and guitar customization apps, shunning the traditional "tone woods" in favor of locally sourced materials that inspire the player to create, as well as the Valvebucker, a tube driven guitar pickup that resembles early tube microphones, resulting in a much larger frequency range by amplifying the guitar signal at its source. Finally Juha discusses his weekly Youtube livestream where he shares his thoughts on life, mindset, and mental health, from his perspective, growing up in a relatively young country whose older generations are still affected by the trauma of devastating wars during the early 1900s, as well as the long dark winters and social pressure of not sharing your feelings. This is one of the longest episodes I have released, but is truly one of the most fascinating and enjoyable, and I am truly grateful that Juha was able to share so many valuable and insightful experiences.

Joining me for this episode is an original member of Lez Zeppelin, solo artist, owner of Hidden Pond Productions and one half of the musical comedy duo Vickie And Nickie, Lisa Brigantino.
