The Rise and Fall of Toys R Us

28m · Published 06 Oct 04:00
Inside the wild and tumultuous history of Toys R Us, the beloved children's brand once again attempting a comeback with in-store shops at Macy's just in time for the holidays. What was once one of the first “category killers,” has faced troubled times. Now, the beloved toy store is reopening its doors once more, this time from inside select Macy's department stores across the US. The in-store shops are currently operating in Georgia, New Jersey, Illinois, Nevada, Louisiana, New York, Maryland, and Missouri, with more expected by October 15.  The return of Toys R Us comes after the store closed its last two remaining stores in January 2021, after the coronavirus pandemic hit in-store sales. The brand previously struggled to make a comeback the year prior, including teaming with Amazon to fulfill its orders.  The beleaguered toy company first tried to make a brick-and-mortar return in 2019, after it was purchased by Tru Kids Brands, which went on to open holiday pop-up shops and relaunch a website in the retailer's name. How eBay lost to Amazon

23m · Published 22 Sep 07:00
In the early 2000's eBay was in direct competition with Amazon but they had very different methodologies when approaching the market. Today we dive into some of the mistakes eBay made in this time where they caught themselves focusing on the wrong metrics and ultimately the wrong side of the market. These mistakes ultimately led to the huge differences in the trajectory of where these companies are today. We talk with Ben Foster, the CPO at GoCanvas, about his time at eBay from 2001-2005 where he lead the "findings" team internally. Youtube started as a dating site?!

34m · Published 15 Sep 07:00
When it was launched in 2005, according to co-founder Steve Chen, Youtube was designed as a way for people to upload videos of themselves talking about the partner of their dreams. Co-founder Jawed Karim also talked about YouTube’s romantic origins. “We even had a slogan for it: Tune in, Hook up.” Despite offering to pay women $20 to upload videos of themselves to YouTube, nobody came forward, forcing Chen, Karim and co-founder Chad Hurley to adopt a different strategy. Today we explore the epic pivot Youtube took just ten days after launching, that set it on course to be the backbone of video on the internet that it is today. *** This show is a part of the Podglomerate network, a company that produces, distributes, and monetizes podcasts.
