Why The World Is Not Designed For Women And What We Can Do To Change It with Dr Carin Bondar.

26m · Published 24 Feb 09:00

Getting tenure as a professor takes many years. It’s hard and intense work and men and women are equally skilled and ambitious about this. However there is a point in the process where women start to drop behind or out all together, usually in their 30’s when they start to have children. Men traditionally at this point have wives at home to take care of the childcare but women aren’t so lucky. As a result, as in many professions, we have lost brilliant women because they just don’t have the capacity to excel in two jobs. In fact only 20% of fully tenured professors in STEM today are women. And the effects of this on our lives and our economy are wide ranging. Most of the devices we use today, from our phones to cars to the airbags that deploy in an accident, were all designed by men, for men’s bodies and how men think.

Our guest today is a woman who is determined to change all this. Dr Carin Bondar is a Canadian biologist, writer, filmmaker, speaker and television personality and we are very proud to say, a recent She’s on Top member.  She is also the visionary behind STEM Angels, a registered charity that supports women continuing in the science and technology sector of higher academia. The STEM Angels Foundation is the first of its kind in the world so we were thrilled to learn more about this subject and to be able to share this information with you.

Some of the questions we ask:

  1. What is STEM?
  2. How did you get into STEM and why?
  3. Let's talk about the crazy statistic on your website that only 20% of fully tenured professors in STEM subjects are women. Why is that?
  4. Why does it matter? Why do we need women in STEM?
  5. What can maternal perspectives in science achieve?
  6. How do we fix this?
  7. What is the STEM Angels foundation and how can we help?
  8. What have been some of your biggest struggles around getting recognition and having a seat at the table?
  9. Advice is there for women who want to get into this field

Why We Need More Women In The Music Industry And How To Achieve It with Aloe Blacc

29m · Published 13 Jan 09:00

It’s our first podcast of 2022 and we are celebrating it with our first male podcast guest, Aloe Blacc. Aloe is a Grammy nominated musician, singer, songwriter, rapper, record producer, and philanthropist. Aloe fell in love with hip-hop as a kid and started writing rap songs when he was nine. His illustrious career has focussed on love, good energy and positivity. “When I signed a major-label contract, I recognized the power of having a larger audience, and I promised myself that I’d use my voice for social change” he says. And that’s just one of the many things we admire about Aloe and why we wanted to share his philosophy and point of view with our audience.

Aloe also believes in empowering women so their voices can be heard too. Their perspective and point of view are needed in music and we chat with Aloe about how we can achieve this goal. We also talk about the importance of community, how we define success and what we can all do individually to be part of the change that needs to happen.

“When things happening in the world seem so terrible and dark, it’s so easy to get stuck in all the negative. But I try to do whatever I can to help people out of that. I want my music to be the light.”

Some of the questions we ask Aloe:

  1. How did you get into music?
  2. Did you always want to be a musician?
  3. You’ve had a very successful career so far - did you always want it to be about positivity?
  4. What were the influences on you that helped you create your music?
  5. Why is it harder for positive songs to break through?
  6. Why are positive songs so important?
  7. Why do you think it’s important to have more female voices heard?
  8. Why is it important for men to support female artists and producers?
  9. What do you see women bring to the music industry as producers and musicians that is different from men?
  10. What do you see as the change needed to get more women into the music industry?
  11. Advice for women to break into the music industry from a male point of view.
  12. How do we stay positive with all the bad news that’s thrown at us?
  13. Who are some of the women in your life that inspired you?

How To Conquer Your Hidden Prejudices And Support The Movement For Change with Dana Hill, aka Mama Doll, Founder of The Black Doll Affair

36m · Published 02 Dec 09:00

Today we’re chatting with Dana Hill, the founder of The Black Doll Affair.

On December 17, 2007, after witnessing a "Doll Test" on The Oprah Winfrey Show, Dana was inspired to create The Black Doll Affair. The infamous “Doll Tests” from the documentary “A Girl Like Me” showed that black children associated black dolls with being “bad” and “ugly” and made it clear that they preferred white dolls, which they deemed “pretty” and “good.”

The Black Doll Affair is a philanthropic organization and self-esteem movement for black girls and women to re-establish their self-esteem, self-image and worth in a society where black women are all too often the lowest on the totem pole.

Connecting your worthiness to the colour or shade of your skin is a huge problem that is ongoing today especially when it comes to black children.  In our conversation with Dana you’ll hear why this issue is so complicated and what we can do to change it.

As Dana says, The Black Doll Affair is not just about the color of your skin, it’s about loving the color of your skin, no matter what shade of black. It’s about self-esteem in hue. It’s about feeling good the way you were born – dark or light. It’s about girls and women conquering self-defeating, self-limiting thought patterns of ‘I’m not good enough because I was born a black girl.' It’s about loving who you are!!!

Some of the topics we cover:

1. What is The Black Doll Affair and what does it do?

2. Why are black children still picking the white dolls?

3. What happens when you give a black child a black doll? Why is it important?

4. Is it making a difference?

5. What more could we do?

6. Where do you see progress?

7. Why is it also important for white women to get involved?

8. How do we get involved? How do we help?

Building A Business That Spans Decades - The Benefits and Secret Sauce with Tory Wright

22m · Published 28 Oct 08:00

Today we are speaking with someone near and dear to Jessica’s heart, her sister Tory. Jessica comes from a family of female entrepreneurs. Her mother opened a highly successful paper store in Yorkville in the 70’s called The Papery, which went on to be franchised in Ottawa and Victoria, BC. In the early 80’s her sister started a company called Paper E. Clips, a wholesale greeting card and paper products company, which distributed to retail stores across Canada. When she started out she was a small fry in the paper industry surrounded by larger, successful companies run by mostly men.

Most of the companies that were around back then have disbanded or gone under so we were curious to find out how Tory managed to survive and is still growing thirty years later. How did she adapt, grow and outlast her competition?

So many of our stories about success take place over 2-5 years so we were excited to talk to an entrepreneur about what it is like to build a business over multiple decades. What was it like operating before the digital age? How do you create a family atmosphere that keeps your employees growing with you? How do you define success?

Tory has some great insights that we hope you’ll enjoy.

The Power We All Have To Dramatically Change The Lives Of Others with Amanda Clark and Kym Hannah

38m · Published 30 Sep 08:00

Amanda Clark and Kym Hannah are two incredible women who have changed the face of adoption. They are the founders of TEAMworks which is a non profit foundation that seeks to improve and enhance the lives of special needs children locally and internationally.

We first learned of their incredible story when we interviewed Emily Chang last season, the author of The Spare Room. If you haven’t already listened to that podcast we encourage you to check it out. The Spare Room is about creating your own personal legacy and Emily shared a number of powerful stories of women who had done just that. Amanda and Kym’s story in particular was so moving that we asked Emily to connect us with them.

We love this story because it demonstrates we all have the power to impact the lives of others.  It doesn’t matter what it is, in this case it was hundreds of children, but it might be just one child or one person. What we learned is to say YES when something wakes you or moves you and to just take that first step. And how we all have the power to dramatically change the lives of others.

Topics we cover:

  1. How Amanda began the journey by adopting her two sons with cerebral palsy from an orphanage in the Ukraine.
  2. How did the first trip to the orphanage with a team of therapists come about?
  3. The conditions in the orphanage.
  4. Our different cultural biases in regards to special needs and orphaned children
  5. What were the changes they implemented and what have been the results.
  6. How can we as individuals make a difference?
