Why Being Authentic is the New Original

9m · Published 12 May 08:13

In this episode of "Small Business Talk with Cathy Smith," Cathy explores the power of authenticity based on a quote from Elizabeth Gilbert's book, Big Magic. The discussion challenges the societal pressure of constantly striving for originality and innovation, emphasizing the importance of being true to oneself instead.

Authenticity is about embracing your unique experiences, values, and perspectives. Being authentic allows your true self to shine through, avoiding imitation or trying to be someone you're not. Liz Gilbert suggests "that when you are authentic enough, people will perceive your work as original".

Mark Twain's quote, "There is no such thing as a new idea," supports the idea that creativity is a process of rearranging existing ideas into new combinations. Authenticity provides the lens through which these ideas are filtered and expressed.

The episode highlights the many benefits of authenticity. When you are authentic, you save mental energy by not having to remember who you are or maintain a facade constantly. Authenticity fosters genuine relationships, collaboration, and inspires others to embrace their true selves. It allows for personal growth and self-discovery, as you tap into your unique strengths and chart your own path with confidence.

In a world that values conformity, embracing authenticity becomes a valuable asset. The episode encourages listeners to embrace their authentic voice and contribution, emphasizing that the world needs their true selves. The focus shifts from the pressure of being original to the importance of being genuine.

To explore further how to embrace authenticity in your own life, Cathy invites listeners to engage in a conversation and witness the magic that unfolds when you embrace your true self.

33m · Published 16 Feb 05:48

Why masterminds don't work for most businesses. We are told that we need to go out there and do personal development. Business development masterminds are a great thing, but why don't they work?

My special guest today is Bodo Frost.

It's a very simple answer in a way with Masterminds aren't they great? You get lots of nuggets, special information and things and ideas, about what you could do to improve your business. That's great. Then you go away after the mastermind, after that meeting, you had a coffee or whatever it is. You, you go back to your business. Then the daily grind gets you and then you forget. What was it? Oh, this nugget that I thought about.

Build a Business You Can Sell with David Barnett

45m · Published 26 Jan 01:00

In this episode of Small Business Talk, my guest is David Barnett,  who has over 20 years of experience working with small and medium-sized businesses and has been helping people buy and sell businesses since 2008. We discuss the topic of building a business that people want to buy. David explains that the value of a business is related to the cash flow it creates and that this is multiplied by a factor depending on the risks involved in the industry. He emphasises that having systems, policies, procedures, and checklists in place is crucial in demonstrating that someone can actually learn how to operate the business and that it's not dependent on the current owner's special skills or abilities.

We talk about the importance of not being key-person dependent, which is essential for the business to run smoothly even if certain key people leave or pass away. Illustrating this point by sharing a story of a business that had to struggle when a key team member passed away, as they did not have an organised system in place that was accessible to others in the company. This highlights the importance of having an organised system in place that allows others to take over the business seamlessly in case of any unexpected events.

David also mentions that as a private transaction advisor, he helps his clients through the process of buying or selling a business without taking an agency role. He acts as a coach or consultant and helps his clients navigate the process and overcome any challenges they may face. Overall, Barnett emphasizes the importance of having a well-organized and systematic business to make it more attractive to potential buyers and to ensure that the business can run smoothly even in unexpected situations.
