"Tough Love"? Creating a Safe Emotional Space in Cancer Rehab

42m · Published 08 Aug 10:00

There’s a time & a place for hard truths in cancer rehab.

But “tough love” can sometimes cross the line into cruelty for our patients.

Cancer is taxing in every realm of a patient’s existence; the last thing they need is for their rehab professional to be cruel in the name of blunt honesty or “just telling it like it is.”

As a cancer rehab physical therapist, it's essential to maintain a compassionate and patient-centered approach while still ensuring the best care for your clients.

Listen now to gain insights, inspiration, and practical strategies to find that perfect balance between "tough love" and the creation of a safe emotional space in the world of cancer rehabilitation. Remember, you are exactly the therapist that your patients need - let's make every interaction count.

The Healing Power of Adventure: First Descents & AYA Survivorship

42m · Published 01 Aug 10:00

While cancer can affect anyone, the Adolescent & Young Adult (AYA) patient population can experience heightened distress & challenges compared to other age groups.

However, these issues are frequently overlooked & underserved, leading to potentially lifelong challenges.

Worse yet, these patients often discuss being “dropped off a cliff” once they finish treatment.  They attempt to return to “normal life,” but report feeling alone, abandoned, struggling, anxious, depressed, & other psychological issues.  What they need is ongoing psychosocial supportive care.

Enter First Descents.

Today, Kristin McMaster is on TheOncoPT Podcast to discuss the impact of First Descents, how incorporating outdoor activities is so beneficial for our AYA survivors, & how to connect your patients with First Descents.

How to Be a More Inclusive OncoPT: Breaking Down Misconceptions and Taking Action

46m · Published 18 Jul 10:00

Over the past several decades, we’ve seen a tremendous increase in cancer survivorship, meaning more patients are living longer after their cancer diagnosis.  However, this increase is not seen equally across all patient groups.

For example, Black & African American patients continue to experience the highest rates of cancer mortality compared to other racial groups in the US.  And this doesn’t even begin to cover the extreme differences in insurance coverage, affordable access to care, & inclusion in cancer research trials.

In the ever-evolving world of healthcare, it is essential for OncoPTs to embrace diversity, equity, and inclusion within their practice. But we can’t stop there.

In this podcast episode, we dive deep into the topic of becoming a more inclusive OncoPT with Dr. Patrick Ford, challenging common misconceptions and providing actionable steps for clinicians to take today.

It’s no secret that cancer is EXPENSIVE, which can make accessing care extremely challenging for some patients.  While various solutions are available today, one of my favorite organizations meeting these needs & expanding access to quality care is Moving Beyond Cancer Collective.

Mari Galle, an oncology acupuncturist based in Austin, Texas, shared her journey and the inspiring work she does on TheOncoPT Podcast. Alongside her team, Mari has been instrumental in establishing the Moving Beyond Cancer Collaborative, a nonprofit organization aimed at providing accessible and holistic care to individuals affected by cancer.
