Applying Science And Technology Principles To The M&A Space – Kison Patel (Ep 49)

32m · Published 28 Sep 05:30

Kison Patel, my guest for this episode, is applying principles of science and technology to the M&A (mergers & acquisitions) space.  He is the Founder and CEO of M&A Science, a community of forward-thinking M&A practitioners on a mission to perfect the M&A practice. Kison was also an M&A advisor for ten years, having sold large companies such as commercial banks and hotel chains.

In 2012, Kison noticed teams lacked efficient technology to manage deals and thus created DealRoom, an M&A lifecycle management platform. In 2016, he started the M&A Science podcast and devoting his time to creating a platform where all the best practitioners could share best practices and lessons learned from real-life deals.

Kison then created The M&A Science Academy in 2020 to offer step-by-step training to those looking to master M&A, featuring courses created by top-level practitioners.

Through developing technology, educational content, and industry training, Kison aims to bring better practices to an industry with growing market pressures, transaction values, and competition.

I confessed in our conversation that my exposure to M&A is limited, but I have observed that it was a business space that is/was very behind the times. We talk a good deal about this and:

  • The impact starting a podcast has had on his business
  • Creating educational content and products in the M&A space
  • How the competitive landscape is responding to the work of his companies and more

Learn more about Kison Patel at MAScience.com. https://www.mascience.com/

Please enjoy this conversation with Kison Patel.

This episode is brought to you by the Unstarving Musician.
The Unstarving Musician is another podcast on which yours truly speaks with independent musicians and music industry professionals to discuss the various elements of the music business. This week's featured Unstarving Musician episode is with Ryan Dusick, founding member of Maroon 5 and author of Harder to Breathe: A Memoir of Making Maroon 5, Losing It All, and Finding Recovery (out November 2022).

These days Ryan is an Associate Marriage & Family Therapist. The importance of this episode, and it's possible relevance to you or someone you know, is that Ryan's story is an in-depth look at his journey from the highs of international superstardom to the depths of addiction, anxiety, chronic injury, and depression. Harder to Breathe chronicles Ryan’s remarkable recovery and his transition from the music industry to professional counseling where he’s helped hundreds of clients overcome mental and physical health challenges.

Emotional and physical well-being is a topic important to us all,
so if you think it might help someone you know, please share this episode with them.

Sales, Appearances And The Most Attractive Curve On a Person’s Body–Ovidilio David Vasquez (Ep 48)

33m · Published 31 Aug 05:30

My guest for this episode is Ovidilio David Vasquez (aka Ovi). We recorded this conversation on  the 22nd of January, while I was still based in Vista Mar, Panama. The intro was recorded from my new studio in Querétaro, Mexico.

Ovi was raised on a sugarcane farm in Guatemala. His life path took him from Guatemala to the U.S. and then to graduating from Harvard Business School Online. But it doesn't end there. Today Ovi is a sought after speaker who educates young students by sharing his story and insights on how they can succeed in school.

Summing up his life story in Ovi's words, he learned to wield a machete in the sugarcane fields of Guatemala at age eight. In 2006 at age fifteen, he moved to the U.S. unaccompanied. Ovi's life changed forever. Around 2009 he found himself alone and with zero support,  doing what needed to be done to survive.

Ovi put himself through high school, working various jobs and was ultimately inspired by a mentor to pursue college. This was a defining moment in his life. He applied and was accepted into Harvard  Business School Online, where he earned certifications in technology and project management.

Ovi is the author of six books, a TEDx speaker on Self-Leadership and has been an on-air collaborator for Univision. He's has worked for well known companies such as Apple, Tesla, Salesforce, Uber, and GM.

I noticed a recurring theme of mentorship throughout our conversation. I'm guessing that his mentors weren't sure if they have an impact on Ovi's life, but they definitely did. He listened to and acted upon what they said.

Ovi is a voracious consumer of motivational material and has held several sales gigs. He sees these two things as a big part of his personal development and in shaping the way he thinks. We talk about this and some of the surrounding details, including:

  • How he views his experience selling carwax at a gas station as one of the the best communication schools
  • Tips for learning a second language
  • Googling his way into the Harvard Business School Onine
  • Learning in his sleep
  • Sales and appearances and the most attractive curve in a person's body, the smile.

I hope you enjoy this conversation as much as I did recording it.

If You Do Something That Has Value, That's A Product–Jennifer Briney of Congressional Dish (Ep 47)

39m · Published 02 Aug 05:30

Jennifer Briney feels that if you do something of value, that something is a product. This is the premise upon which her Congressional Dish podcast is built. CongressionalDish.com states that it's, "a podcast that aims to draw attention to where the American people truly have power: Congress. From the perspective of a fed-up taxpayer with no allegiance to any political party, Jennifer Briney will fill you in on the must-know information about what our representatives do AFTER the elections and how their actions can and do affect our day to day lives." This is an apt description and the content of Congressional Dish is indeed something of value.

Jennifer and I met at the Podcast Movement 2021 conference in Nashville and I'm honored to feature her in this episode of Morning Tempo. She's is doing important work on Congressional Dish and doing so in as much non-partisan fashion as one can hope for. The podcast was an eye-opener for this listener and for anyone who get their news from outlets such as cable TV, popular newsfeeds such as Apple or Reuters, or social media.

Although we do discuss the content of Congressional Dish, our conversation isn't exclusively focused on the podcast. But I did get to know a little about Jennifer as a person. Our conversion covers Jennifer's history with Podcast Movement, the Congressional Dish business model (yes it's a business), her legendary AMA on Reddit, her digital-nomad/travel lifestyle (which Congressional Dish helps to fund), the big lessons learned in her journey as host of Congressional Dish, and building trust one person at a time.

I encourage you to check out an episode (or two) of Congressional Dish. You can find it wherever fine podcasts are found and at CongressionalDish.com. And you can find Jennifer @JenBriney on Twitter and Instagram. Please enjoy my conversation with Jennifer Briney of Congressional Dish.

New Writers Should Surround Themselves With Like-minded Creatives – Lyndi Allison (Ep 46)

34m · Published 15 Apr 05:30
Lyndi Allison believes that new writers should surround themselves with like-minded creatives. She is truly one of my favorite creatives. We met at a beach community restaurant in Panama, where she told me about an introductory writers workshop she was hosting. We talked about writing on this same occasion and she wooed me into attending her workshop. I'm really glad I went. Pre pandemic, I was a regular at her full workshops. Lyndi still hosts these workshops at a wonderful place she calls home.  Her home is also known as Tranquilo Retreat, A Writer's Getaway.

Lyndi is herself a fiction writer in the young adult sci-fi genre. Her workshops have prompted works of several fiction, non-fiction and songwriters, myself included. My first published songs were in fact born at her workshops.

In this conversation...

In this conversation Lyndi and I discuss Tranquilo Retreat, the inspiration for her recently published summer triangle sci-fi trilogy, processing grief through storytelling, learning the craft of writing, her publishing journey, key takeaways from the publishing journey, tips for writers and more.

You can learn more about Lyndi, her books and writers workshops at TranquiloRetreat.com.

Please enjoy my chat with Lyndi Allison.

Helping Entrepreneurial Women Gain Clarity – Amanda Abella (Ep 45)

29m · Published 09 Mar 06:30
Amanda Abella helps entrepreneurial women gain clarity on the markets they can best serve. She is a recruiter turned freelance writer, turned personal finance coach, turned sales coach. She is without question an entrepreneurial type.

We didn’t get specifically into the creative aspects of how she started her business, but Amanda strikes me as highly creative. She did seemingly create her business out of thin air after all. Actually, she did it with a combination of experience, confidence and with the help of mentors.

Amanda is a firecracker in my book. She’s a firecracker that’s all about helping women build high-ticket service businesses. I believe she’s also on a mission to reassure women of their capacity for independence, maybe even world domination.

In this conversation...

In this conversation we cover Amanda’s humble beginnings in sales, she gave her insights into the great resignation, which I refer to as the mass workplace exodus. We also discuss her sales training program, her Make Money Your Honey podcast, her potty mouth, how women can get comfortable selling and charging more, and one of her most memorable mistakes.

Yup, Amanda’s a fire cracker. She’s also a great conversationalist. This episode consequently required little editing. If you’re reading Amanda–good job. You rock. I really enjoyed speaking with you.

Please enjoy my conversation with Amanda Abella.

How To Retire And Live As An Expat In Panama–Greg Kitzmiller (Ep 42)

27m · Published 15 Dec 06:30
Greg Kitzmiller is an expert on how to retire and live as an expat in Panama. He shares everything he knows in his book “2 Retire In Panama: Adventures Of A Young Retired Couple.” Greg and his wife Jen did their due diligence and research before taking the plunge toward retirement in Panama. He shares his ongoing research in a weekly newsletter, providing updates to a growing community of people who are considering retirement in Panama. I venture to say that his book and newsletter are also very helpful to the digital nomad crowd, as younger people are looking into location independence. Living as an expat in Panama myself, I can atest that Greg’s book is packed full of useful content. You can find Greg’s book and newsletter at 2RetireInPanama.com.

In this conversation we cover Greg and wife Jen’s research and exploration of Panama, the post publishing challenges of marketing the book, his plans for paid content related to retiring and living in Panama, and the creative motivation behind his next book.

Greg is a super nice guy. I’ve enjoyed working with him on his website and newsletter.
I have also enjoyed getting to know him a little better through this conversation and random meetings about town in the Coronado beach area.

Please enjoy my chat with Greg Kitzmiller.

"Awakening Hearts, A Tale Of Love Across Lifetimes" A New Novel By Angie K Love (Ep 41)

28m · Published 10 Nov 06:30

Angie K Love has just published her first novel "Awakening Hearts, A Tale Of Love Across Lifetimes." Angie and I have been acquainted for about ten years. We recently reconnected by way of an accidental email. I did that thing where you inadvertently allow your email service provider to send an email to all contacts. Oops. Our accidental reconnection turned out to be a twist of good fortune. Angie was about to publish her first book when she received my email. We decided it was an opportune time for a conversation on the podcast. It was in fact a great opportunity to hear about the journey leading to her first novel, "Awakening Hearts, A Tale Of Love Across Lifetimes." As the title implies, it does touch on the subject of love. You can read a synopsis and find video readings by Angie on her website AngieKLove.com.

In this conversation we talk about Angie's writing journey, the many things she learned about writing a novel, the people she met along the way, her move to writing full time, what she plans after publishing this novel and more. I think Angie is digging her heals in on this writing thing. She's already working on her next book and hopes to publish next year in 2022. No pressure Angie. You got this.

Find all of Angie's work, including her new novel "Awakening Hearts, A Tale Of Love Across Lifetimes," at AngieKLove.com.

Please enjoy my conversation with Angie K Love.
