by Carolyn Hern

A real-life look at what it takes to own and operate a boutique fitness studio. We'll share what it's really like running a business--exciting things like creating more value for clients and less exciting things, like keeping the toilet from backing up each week. Episode 17: Is it possible to find more time each day? Part 2

40m · Published 24 Jul 09:00
Last week, we talked about how doing lots of things, doesn't necessarily mean your business is benefiting. In fact, you might be doing your business more harm than good by doing everything yourself and not delegating work to others. This week, we finish the conversation--we talked so much that we split the episode into two parts--by talking more about how to delegate effectively. We even share some of our delegating fails, what we learned, and why we'll never repeat those mistakes again. And finally, we share how we create our ideal day--the ultimate goal of the 5 Days to Time Freedom course. What would your ideal day look like? Do you find yourself exhausted at the end of each day … but haven’t made a dent in your to-do list? Are you on the verge of massive burnout? #beenthere Oftentimes, as busy business owners, we are so focused on the day-to-day and getting our massive to-do lists complete that we fail to recognize if all this work we’re doing is really moving our businesses forward. What do I mean by that? Well … if you’re doing lots of things, that doesn’t necessarily mean your business is benefiting. In fact, you might be doing your business more harm than good by doing everything yourself and not delegating work to others. Yep. It’s time to take a cold, hard look at how you can find time freedom. I’ve created a new course called 5 Days to Time Freedom. Episode 15: How do you manage a team in the Gig Economy?

38m · Published 10 Jul 09:00
We’ve all heard about gigs and side hustles. But what does the Gig Economy mean for your business. If most of your employees are part-time, or have multiple jobs, how does that change the way you manage them and find success in your business? The Gig Economy goes beyond driving for Uber and Lyft. With opportunities for your employees to sell multi-level marketing products via Facebook, influencer blogging, and a plethora of part-time openings in brick-and-mortar stores, it’s likely that many of your employees won’t just be working for you. The Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates that “gig” workers represent approximately 34% of today’s workforce and by 2020, that number will increase substantially to 43%. In this episode, we’ll discuss the opportunities and challenges that “gig” workers bring to your business and how you can effectively manage this workforce. Episode 14: Ask Carolyn Anything

34m · Published 03 Jul 09:00
What if you could find out what your boss is really thinking? Yikes! Too scary?! This week, the tables are turned and Emily and Christina will be asking me all the questions ... including what I did before opening my Pure Barre studios, what I'm most proud of accomplishing in my business, and which one of them is my favorite manager. Just kidding! But I did share something that I really didn't want to reveal. What is it? You'll have to listen to find out! This week's episode is sponsored by my online courses. If you are ready to hire a team and create a hiring process tailored for your business, then check out How To Hire A Rockstar Team, which walks you step-by-step through the exact same hiring process that I use. So, I know it works! And ... I just created a course, 5 Days to Time Freedom. If you find yourself saying "I never have enough time" or "Where is all my time going", then this course is for you! Episode 13: The Power of Saying No

31m · Published 26 Jun 09:00
So, how’s it going? How are you? I’m so busy! I’ve been so busy, it’s just insane. And so starts the beginning of just about every conversation in today’s modern age. And … it’s so f-ing boring, sometimes I can’t even stand it. Why are we sooo busy? Are we actually doing more … or are we overscheduled and overworked with the wrong things, we don’t have any time to get anything important done? I’m going to go out on a limb and say most of this “business” is more about doing the wrong things than prioritizing what’s most important. And frankly, that’s sad. When was the last time you said “No” to someone? Why is saying “No” so hard? The big problem with refusing to say “No” to things you don’t have time for, or don’t want to do, is that they take a huge toll on the remaining time you have for the things you need … and like to do. The lesson here is the more you say “No,” the more you can say “Yes.” Check out the website www.shesonhertoes.com --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/shes-on-her-toes/support

Episode 12: 3 Ways to Beat the Summer Fitness Slump

57m · Published 19 Jun 09:00
It seems counterintuitive. Wouldn’t you want to workout in the summer? But, alas. No. What seems like a busy time for fitness is actually known in the industry as the dreaded summer fitness slump. You know, that time when it seems like almost all of your clients head out of town to the beach, the mountains, fabulous trips to Europe and the Caribbean, and a few more trips to the beach for good measure. It’s a time for fitness studio owners to hunker down, spend as little money as possible, clean out your back-storage room, and anxiously await your vacationing clients to all come back for a busy Fall—please come back! But what if you could evade the summer slump? Is it possible to actually grow your client base in the so-called slow summer months? You’re damn right it is. We discuss our top 3 ways to beat the summer fitness slump. Episode 11: How to Manage Millennials When You're Old AF

41m · Published 12 Jun 09:00
Millennials, or the generation born between 1981 and 1996, will make up about 75% of the workforce in 2025. That’s just 7 years away. And we’ve all heard some pretty negative criticism about this group—they’re unfocused; entitled; demanding; and addicted to technology. Are these stereotypes? Maybe. Maybe not. It doesn’t really matter because these are the people who will be moving businesses forward. The single thing that separates Millennials from previous generations is technology. So, while my generation was outside playing with sticks, millennials had these crazy things called smart phones that gave them unfettered access to the Internet. When you’re old AF, how are you supposed to lead this group of so-called Millennial workplace misfits? How can you manage Millennials to successfully run your business and ultimately find their own success? --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/shes-on-her-toes/support

Episode 10: THE Thing Successful People Do ... READ

51m · Published 05 Jun 09:00
It turns out that what you do every day really does matter. The most successful individuals on this planet have daily rituals to keep them at the top of their game. And, overwhelmingly, the most successful and wealthy, read books. Like, actual books. Every single day. Ok, ok. Some of them listen to books AND podcasts. But reading the written word directly correlates to higher education and thus higher income. Studies have shown that reading 7 or more books per year makes you 122% more likely to be a millionaire. Why is that? Maybe it’s because reading expands the mind and encourages creativity. Maybe it’s because so many of us don’t read, that this type of continuous learning gives regular readers a huge advantage in business and in life. Today, we’ll talk about all that AND share our favorite books and podcasts to help you develop a strong habit of reading.
