The Buddha That Transformed 11th Ave with Dan Stevenson

40m · Published 11 Jan 21:42

In 2009 11th Avenue and 19th Street in Oakland was an intersection that attracted garbage dumping, and gatherings of street people whose energy was dark and divisive. It was in this environment that Dan and Lu Stevenson, living in the neighborhood, got the creative idea to install a Buddha statue on the corner and see if it might change things. And did it ever! Here Dan Stevenson talks with Julie about how their neighborhood was transformed--how the Buddha became a unifying force that shifted the energy of their neighborhood for good.

Thriving As A Social Entrepreneur With Madeleine Shaw

50m · Published 30 Nov 22:02

"We are living in a linear world and yet we are cyclical beings…We are in an override mode with our nervous systems and our minds…Yes we want solutions that work for the planet AND we need to not drive ourselves crazy or burn ourselves out as we approach those goals." Madeleine Shaw

Madeleine Shaw's new book, The Greater Good, as described on her website, is an inspiring, practical and deeply personal look at a growing movement of non-traditional entrepreneurs whose ventures are focused on creating social and environmental change.

Here, Madeleine talks with Julie about the core elements she writes about in her book and expands our notions of what it can look like to be in business in a way that honors who we are and what we have to give. Her own path from feminist activist to social entrepreneur was a radical shift of focus and put her on a transformational path that continues today.

Madeleine shares from her new book "The Greater Good": • We are cyclical beings and can design our lives to work with our humanity • Thriving doesn't have to mean scaling • Madeleine's first product design was a personal solution to period pads • Alternative ways to structure your business • Empowering people on the fringes • Her vision for the future and the role of everyday people starting businesses that solve the world's problems
