Jonathan has a degree in filmmaking from Lakes Region Community College and years of experience working in television, feature films, short films, commercials, real estate, weddings, and more! Creative Guts is thrilled to present Snarl, a duo exhibition featuring the captivating works of Heather Hernon and Raisa Tolchinsky at the Rochester Museum of Fine Arts! As two past guests of the Creative Guts podcast (episodes 98 and 154), their combined artistry promises an unforgettable experience for visitors to the Carnegie Gallery.

Creative Guts is seeking art and writing in all styles, subject matters, and mediums for the 2024 Youth Zine! The mission of Creative Guts’ zines is to stimulate and inspire creativity by creating a platform for gutsy creatives to share their art and writing with the world. Recognizing it is often the youngest among us who are the bravest, this edition will be a platform for youth to display their work and be part of a creative community.

Artists and writers from the ages of 0 to 17, from any country, are welcome to apply with visual and written works in any medium: painting, drawing, sculpture, digital art, printmaking, fiber, photography, mixed media, poetry, short story (300 words maximum), etc.

The best part: It is free to submit work! The zine will be available for free on our website, CreativeGutsPodcast.com, in late summer 2024 and participants will receive one free copy of a printed edition.

The deadline for kiddos to submit their work is Sunday, June 30th, 2024 (11:59 PM - Eastern Time)

In this episode of Creative Guts, co-hosts Laura Harper Lake and Sarah Wrightsman sit down with Lionel Loveless of Officially Knotted Bowties. Lionel, also known as Mr. Bowtie Daily, is a self-taught seamster who takes vintage neckties and other fabric and transforms them into custom bow ties! The bow ties he creates are upcycled, sustainable, and one-of-a-kind pieces. Sometimes his bow ties are an opportunity to carry the essence of a loved one — you’ll see how when you hear the origin story of Officially Knotted Bowties.

In this episode, we’ll talk about some of the coolest bow ties Lionel has made (and the coolest people he’s made bow ties for) and how Lionel found a community here in New Hampshire after growing up in Oklahoma.

In this episode of Creative Guts, co-hosts Laura Harper Lake and Sarah Wrightsman sit down with artist and film editor Eric Gold. Eric explores collective consciousness in populations through the creation of art and community, by coordinating community-created portraits in the US and Canada. His most recent of these projects is Growing Up Portsmouth, a series of community-created portraits of people who are part of Portsmouth’s story from the past 50 years. This collection is on display at the Portsmouth Music and Arts Center (PMAC), in Portsmouth, NH, until April 19th.

We discuss in this episode the logistics and spirit of community-created portraits and Eric’s upcoming work with Exeter High School students to create portraits of some local creatives who have worked with students in the past, and been on Creative Guts. Eric shares how he learned even more about Portsmouth’s history through the Growing Up Portsmouth series, his own history with Portsmouth, and how he sometimes feels like a therapist during the community-created paintings. In this episode of Creative Guts, co-hosts Laura Harper Lake and Sarah Wrightsman talk with artist Shaina Gates! Shaina’s art is a challenge to describe. Her stunning work took a bit of serendipity. Her experimental photography happened when she was playing with black-and-white film, but she’s not a photographer. In order to truly appreciate the mystery of Shaina’s work, you kind of need to see it for yourself! Her experimentation led her to something a bit unique — we don’t know of any other artist doing what Shaina does.

The New Hampshire Charitable Foundation also thought Shaina’s work was pretty cool: Last year Shaina was the recipient of the Piscataqua Region Artist Advancement Grant from the Charitable Foundation. This grant recognizes the important contribution of working artists to the cultural life of the region by providing an annual financial award to promote the artistic growth of visual artists and craftspeople. Shaina is now in the position to share and promote her work as an innovative contribution to the field of experimental photography.

We’re inviting independent filmmakers from New Hampshire and beyond to submit their short films to our short film festival, which will be hosted at Red River Theatres in Concord, New Hampshire, on June 11, 2024. We welcome films from any genre that are 15 minutes or under to be submitted. The spirit of this festival is to celebrate the creativity, voice, and collaboration of filmmakers. We encourage submissions from creatives of all backgrounds and at any stage in their filmmaking journey to apply. Show us your creative guts!
