Beyond the Self with Africa Brooke

by Africa Brooke

Welcome to Beyond the Self, an unfiltered podcast dedicated to shining a spotlight on what truly lies within your control.

Hosted by globally acclaimed consultant, mentor, and writer Africa Brooke, this podcast aims to remind us of the power inherent in taking simple, consistent steps towards personal integrity.

In an era of information overwhelm and societal pressures, it's easy to become fixated on external influences, tiptoeing around potentially sensitive issues and crossing our own boundaries in the process.

Such an environment often leads to self-sabotage. That's where Beyond the Self steps in.

Africa aims to assist you in uncovering your own blind spots, promoting healthy detachment from the ego, honouring discomfort, and rekindling curiosity. The goal is to equip you with the tools needed to reclaim control of your life's journey.

Every episode features Africa's encouraging insights about our shared human complexities, both messy and beautiful. She values nuanced understanding, and more importantly, provides practical, evidence-based tools and resources to help you integrate these learnings into your life.

Looking for an uncompromising approach to personal development and life philosophy? You've found the right place. Here, we don't hold back. Welcome to Beyond the Self.

#067 - The trap of attachment style labels

48m · Published 18 Dec 05:00

What happens when you start defining yourself, and your way of being by your attachment style? Do they confine us, creating a trap we unwittingly fall into? In this episode I'm exploring if placing a label on ourselves does us any justice.

I share my journey, navigating the nuances of Dismissive Avoidant and Fearful Avoidant styles, exploring solitude and the rollercoaster of ambivalence in relationships. It's a journey that questions the very essence of attachment style labels.

#065 - Painful but necessary changes

25m · Published 04 Dec 05:00

These past few months have felt heavy. After writing my book for what seemed to be going on for 3 years, I had to rewrite it as I realised I was writing the wrong book. So that's where I've been, rewriting my book which is now in the safe hands of my publishers.

I also want to update you on the on-and-off relationship with my ex, the person I love the deepest and share my insights in real-time. So tune in and let's catch up.

#064 - Refuse to play the game

15m · Published 02 Oct 04:00

No matter what we say or do, there's always someone ready to dissect, criticise, or just plain misinterpret us. But should we let that silence us? Absolutely not. In this episode I ask you some important questions to help you see where you are holding back, censoring your thoughts, or watering down your message because you fear being misunderstood. It's something many of us grapple with, especially in today's climate where even everyday conversations can feel like minefields.

So, join me as I explore the uncharted territory of speaking our truth, embracing the chance of being misunderstood, and discovering the profound beauty that lies in genuine conversations. It's time to let our unfiltered selves shine.

#063 - The fear of being left behind

28m · Published 18 Sep 04:00

Lately, I've been thinking about the labels society places on us. You might know me as a content creator or influencer, but that's just scratching the surface. My work delves deep, involving research and mentorship. I'm all about exploring self-sabotage and self-censorship and understanding the human experience.

For fellow creatives and entrepreneurs, here's a friendly tip: Ditch the "content" label. Take breaks from social media, hone your craft, and live your ideas. Don't rush or mimic others without understanding and don't let algorithms or others' expectations dictate your path.

Remember, your worth is not defined by societal labels or external validation, but by your authenticity and commitment to your craft.

#062 - Tough lessons: owning your toxicity, using your voice confidently, the truth about success

48m · Published 11 Sep 04:00

Prepare yourself for a thought-provoking exploration of three profound life lessons that shaped my path. Last year Steven Bartlett created a Self Development Coaching project, and I was one of the selected coaches.

I led the segment on mental health and different elements of spirituality, but through the lens of very grounded, realistic, sustainable self-improvement. I recently found many of the notes and lessons I did within that program. There were around 12 lessons, so today I'm sharing three of my favourite ones.

I share what sparked my path to becoming a confident speaker, why feeling victimised is stopping you from moving forward and how you view success (and not just in the entrepreneurial sense). So tune into this episode and hear me share these lessons, see how some of them have changed for me along the way, and let's create a conversation.

#061 - Confession: I've been writing timidly

36m · Published 04 Sep 04:00

Ever wondered what it feels like to get feedback that challenges you to truly be yourself? Well, I've had that experience recently when I received feedback on the first draft of my book. My editors were quick to point out that I was holding back in my writing. Sure, it stung a bit, but I've come to realise the value of their honesty. Let's be real, sharing openly about this is important.

As a writer, I've come to understand the power of seeking feedback. Although I'll admit, at first, it felt like a blow, I've come to embrace feedback as a chance for my personal growth. Striking that balance between staying true to myself and considering outside perspectives is a journey I'm fully engaged in.

I also share how hitting the milestone of turning 31 has sparked some deep reflections for me. This journey towards sobriety and self-improvement has been a wild ride. Not all smooth sailing, for sure, but each experience has played a part in shaping the person I am today.

51m · Published 21 Aug 04:00
