Defining True Belonging (Solo)

24m · Published 12 Jan 23:13

Discovering true belonging is a gift. As humans, we crave belonging on both personal and communal levels. The feeling of being connected is a fundamental desire and we can learn to accept others who are different than we are by seeing and validating their choices made, based on their need to belong.

We often scold children for making choices we disagree with. Validating and showing empathy would likely accomplish greater results in improving our relationships, and the pressures that we have amongst our social structures often blind us to the needs of others.

Feeling discomfort from other people’s choices should not stop us from accepting them and accepting their choices, which were made by them, based on who they are - not who we are. Learning to accept others out of love is key to binding us all together in better, longer lasting and healthier relationships.

The Fatal Price of Sexual Shame and Secrecy (Mordechai Salzberg)

1h 4m · Published 05 Jan 11:00

Communities often attempt to silence sexual conduct and misconduct and the associated secrecy and shame it fosters. Intentional secrecy surrounding sexual knowledge, sexual abuse and sexual addiction profoundly harms children and families in any community and especially one that is sincere and devout, such as Judaism. The Chasidic community in particular has an extreme level of secrecy to the degree that the word ‘pregnant’ is not said aloud, because it's considered too sexual. Mordecai Salzberg, LCSW, is a sexual addiction therapist who works primarily with Chasidic Jews, and speaks about the havoc that this secrecy is wrecking.

The goal of this episode is not to attack any one particular community but rather to bring healthy and meaningful awareness for those affected by these topics and to make them informed that there is hope and healing possible with awareness, conversation and therapy and the experiences described come from years of Mordechai's firsthand client interactions.

Shame from sexual abuse can begin at a young age. In a traditional Chassidic home, a child is commonly chastised and often made to feel ashamed about natural curiosity or asking questions about human biology. These children are often unaware that the topic is to be regarded as private and kept within their family until the moment they are scolded for bringing it up. Ill equipped and uneducated adults often respond with panic and shame, desperately trying to ensure that no one hears their child speak of "such things". To make matters complex, parents have an intense fear of being thrown out of the community. There's no margin for error. If something shameful is innocently spoken or if a major incident such as rape happens, most families attempt to hide it, to protect their place in the community. If a young boy discovers his own body and gets caught masturbating, deemed “the sin”, he could be publicly shamed by his family or mentors, without explanation.

Victims of sexual assault and abuse are often not provided with the tools to understand the difference between when they themselves do something wrong versus when someone has wronged them. They are shamed for speaking up and instructed not to speak of sinful things. Even when believed and validated, it is rare that anything significant happens to their abuser. The family downplays the event for fear of bringing shame to the community by admitting that someone amongst them could commit such heinous acts. Often, that same abuser continues to abuse without being brought to justice. Abusers are often trusted individuals such as school staff members or religious leaders. Being assaulted by a stranger from outside the community is rare. Sadly, every male client of Mordechai’s who struggles with sexual addiction was molested as a child. They often feel that they became “perverted” at a young age and “steeped in sinful desires” after an adult introduced them to sexual touch.

It is not uncommon for an accuser to get in more trouble than their abuser. Families gets angry at the individual who speaks up for causing a commotion. In the Chasidic Jewish Community, as in all groups, abuse is often only seen as a problem once made public. The family of the molester or pedophile will be shamed and the siblings will be considered ineligible for marriage matches. Although complex, children still deserve to be protected from molesters who should be brought to justice.

When a family does come to the community leaders with an abusive situation, it is uncommon to file charges or bring the perpetrator to justice. This misinterpretation of the Jewish legal concept of “moser” (informant), perpetuates the generational cycle of shame and abuse. Sometimes, a family will simply relocate, so as not to re-traumatize those who have been assaulted. Uneducated and without given therapy, these children are statistically likely to become abusers themselves.

At the end of this episode, Mordechai discusses two controversial topics which is available exclusively as premium content here: https://hopetorecharge.com/product/the-fatal-price-of-sexual-shame-and-secrecy-mordechai-salzberg-bonus-content/

Mistakes in Communication (Solo)

28m · Published 30 Dec 06:36

We are human and are always evolving, growing and learning. Many times, we don't communicate what we are feeling. We often neglect those close to us and lack the skills of how to effectively communicate. Sometimes, our biases feed our agenda and we take others for granted, not recognizing what they do for us or misdirect our mindset due to misunderstanding.

Thankfully, the human experience is fluid and allows us to learn from past mistakes to make improvements, which only stand to benefit us, for we are the recipient of our own growth. Matana shares lessons learned in her family relationships, with her husband and children, taking us on her journey from learning to correctly identify caring from those around her to appreciating those closest to us, who often get the least honorable mention.

Learning to listen in order to understand is a critical tool in self development and harnessing the power of silence when having a stressful conversation, can deescalate and the defuse the tension, allowing for understanding, healing, connection and growth.

The Light of Other Days (Gary Sweeney)

43m · Published 22 Dec 11:00

Author Gary Sweeney, wrote a brilliant memoir about growing up with his great-grandparents’ support. His book, The Light of Other Days, shows us the positive person that his great-grandfather was in his life, rather than focusing on his abusive parents, teachers and others. The title’s intent is to focus on the good days that have been or will be, rather than the deep darkness of the present. Gary experienced depression and lives with anxiety and sensory processing issues. He has a talent for describing dealing with those struggles growing up. I highly recommend this book to anyone who has lived through something similar or who has a child going through it.

Gary grew up attending Catholic School in Philadelphia. It was a fear-based culture where children were scared into obedience. Tormented with anxiety, he did not do well emotionally under that system. Many children experience this, and it becomes so overwhelming for some that they eventually kill themselves because they can't deal with the terror and confusion of the way they're being taught they must live. Those in authority threatened him with fire and brimstone, assuming Gary was acting out. They did not consider that his behavior might be coming from anxiety or overstimulation. Worse, his stepfather would tell him that “bad guys would going to come take him away in the night if he didn't stop misbehaving”, and Gary wasn't sure what he was doing wrong. No one validated his struggles except his great-grandfather. Anyone who perceived that he was feeling anxious would minimize his feelings, telling him to “stop feeling that way”.

At daycare, they had a designated nap time. All the other children would fall asleep on command, but Gary could not, and felt trapped on his floor mat. He described it as being stuck in quicksand. All the sounds happening nearby were blaring in his ears as he waited for it to be over. He had to find a way to cope, so he counted 60 seconds 30 times every day. That way, there was an end in sight, and he knew when it was.

Of the many things that Gary's great-grandfather taught him or did for him, the most important lesson, was to be in the present. Gary doesn't remember any gifts anyone gave him, but he remembers the places he went with his great-grandfather and the fun and positive feelings he has about the time they spent together. He learned how important it is for a child to have an authority figure who believes that their struggles are real, comforts them and doesn't take advantage of their fears. His current life mission is to be there for his daughters.

Are Your Excuses Reasons or Reasons Excuses? (Solo)

25m · Published 15 Dec 21:00

Often, we confuse our excuses to be reasons and our reasons to be excuses. We are often certain that the excuse is really a defining reason for us, but we fear it because it might force us to work on something we really don't want to, or face an issue we'd rather not deal with. if we really, truly want to change our lifestyle to move out of a rut, whether mental health, relationships, trying to attract more positivity in our lives, we need to ask the basic question, how much do we really want that change?

The amount that we want it is going to be the determining factor of how we will succeed. we will then be on a path moving forward, which can change and change again to something else and then does something else, but change is good. Staying stagnant isn't.

Similar to like an onion that we have to peel and peel them with different channels, we keep getting deeper and deeper. Naomi Hope, friend who was interviewed previously, went through a crazy transformation in her life. Many crazy transformations. So many. She taught the idea a few years ago of "living alive". We are entitled to down time, sad moments, anxiety, frustration, resentment and many other things, because we're a work in progress until 120. Its critical to change a little bit of our habits, which turns into a lot of bit of our habits, our routines, our boundaries, and we are working now towards living more alive.

We certainly don't enjoy the negativity, so why stay in it? Why not make that change? It all boils down to how much we really, truly want to change, and when we really are ready to change, we take that next step forward towards healing.

Are you ready to start moving forward?

Growing After Parental Hoarding (Margy-Feldhuhn)

1h 3m · Published 01 Dec 11:00

Margy’s father committed suicide and her struggle with his mental health symptoms didn’t end with his death. He was a hoarder. Margy, as his only child, was thrust into the role of going through her parents’ house after he passed. She was the one who had to hire help and a dumpster and motivate her mother to go through her belongings every single day until the house was cleaned out.

Margy provides us insight into the life of a hoarder by talking about her dad. Her father was funny. He was a successful self-employed lawyer and an animal lover. Margy never suspected he might choose to die by suicide. Many hoarders present well to the world with good personal hygiene and success at work and no one would ever know if they didn’t go to their house and see (and smell!) the nightmare.

What causes a person to become a hoarder? Margy’s observations suggest that it’s similar to alcoholism. There is an underlying trauma that has not been dealt with, which causes a person to make decisions every day that may not benefit them or their family. When a person hoards their emotional responses to triggers, those feelings manifest in other ways, such as hoarding behavior.

Margy is now the CEO of a company called Interview Connections. They work to connect business owners to podcasters so they can get their name out on shows. The way she moved up so quickly in business and brought it to 7 figures is astonishing. She attributes all her success to the hardest project she’s ever worked on, cleaning out her parents’ home.

As the Holiday of Thanksgiving 2021 is upon us, we can harness its energy and message.

Gratitude is an essential gift for harnessing and focusing our innate power and allows us to grow and gift to others. Thanksgiving is a holiday that encompasses the idea into a concrete moment, allowing us to reflect on our blessings, recognize them and appreciate them.

Simply eating Turkey or celebrating with others will not make the emotion of gratitude last for any meaningful amount of time without taking the time to focus on our blessings and underscores the opportunity in front of us.

Although it may be difficult, taking the time to do the critically important work will allow us to reap the rewards of happiness and consistent daily practice will solidify the work done for a lifetime.

Chazkeinu: Past, Present & Future

32m · Published 15 Nov 19:35

You might know someone with mental illness. Maybe it’s you; maybe a family member or friend. But it is someone you wish to see get better. You’ve seen them suffer, even while in treatment. Perhaps you have suffered as well. You wish there was another way for them to find help and hope in the darkness. Chazkeinu was created to offer that additional support to Orthodox Jewish women living with mental illness. The safety and understanding offered by their peer groups has been transformative for not only the women seeking support but also their communities. Today, we speak to its founder about how they are working to end the stigma on mental illness, one woman at a time.

Zahava has been on our show twice before (in Episode 13 and Episode 138) talking about her life with bipolar. Today, she joins us with her husband to talk about where their nonprofit has come from and where they are going. The original goal of Chazkeinu was to create a family of (mostly Orthodox Jewish) women who live with mental illness and to remove the shame and stigma they live with because of it. In the last five years, they have grown support groups, added an emergency hotline, and lessened shame for the women, their families, and the entire Orthodox community.

They have developed phone, zoom, and in-person confidential support groups and opportunities for weekend gathering. Their work has lessened mental health stigma in the Orthodox community at large by giving women a safe space to talk openly about what they are going through. Peer support has been proven to provide another level of healing that professionals simply cannot offer. “Peer” doesn’t mean the women are all the same. Each peer group is full of women of all different ages and experiences.

One unique aspect of women’s care at Chazkeinu is to support those who support them. Husbands, children, and other family members, friends, and caregivers have access to listening ears and peer groups as they learn how to best care for their loved one with mental illness. Educating and listening to support givers is essential for the improvement of the women’s mental state. Guiding support givers to end the stigma in their own minds strengthens the healing journey for themselves and for the loved one they care for.

Zahava and her husband cannot (and do not) do it alone. They need more people on their team. There are many reasons they require support. Not only are they continuing their current work and adding new clients to it, they hope to someday have the ability to give a care package to each of their clients and to build a “chill house” in cities across the globe where clients can come and find refuge from the world. They want to be able to organize and run as the growing non-profit that they are, which will require additional staff, tools, and general finances. Zahava and her husband need strong support to be able to care for their clients well. Join them today by sharing their story or donating financially. You can be a part of saving and improving the lives of individual women and of their communities.
