Meet Pabel Martinez, a former Tech executive whose mission is to redefine professionalism by scaling the representation he wished he had earlier in his career.
Pabel was born in NYC to Dominican parents, and grew up in the projects in the Upper West Side. He was raised by his Abuela who helped him develop a sense of belonging with the Dominican community by teaching him Spanish since he was born.
He graduated with a degree in Economics from Northeastern University and upon graduation entered the Tech field. He worked in tech for ca. 10 years at companies such as Facebook and TikTok, and most recently, he became an entrepreneur and the owner of Plurawl.
We covered a range of topics in this conversation, including how affirmative action helped him get to College, the difference between inclusion vs. assimilation, and how he aims to be the generation that eliminates code switching by redefining what a “Professional” looks like.
Pabel has accessed a level of courage and vulnerability that we have not seen before, and he is using his experiences to empower the Latinx community to advocate for themselves, while being their authentic selves.

Meet Dr. Luis Estevez, an entrepreneur who has taken advantage of the opportunities presented to him with the same drive characteristic of people who come to this country in search of a better future.
Dr. Estevez grew up in Queens, NY and was born into a blue-collar family to parents from Spain and Chile, and grew up working in the restaurant business from age 8. He got into college at age 18 and after a couple of years, he decided to go back to NY and work at his parents’ restaurant. It wasn’t until almost 10 years later, that he decided to go back to college, and this time he was all in!
Dr. Estevez has a PhD in Materials Science and Engineering from Cornell University, he now owns his business called Advanced and Innovative Multifunctional Materials (AIMM), and likes to say that he won the “genetic lottery”, but we know he has worked hard to take advantage of every opportunity presented to him.
He is also a podcaster and has created a space called What’s the PhDeal, to help demystify the PhD degree, and to help new PhD students navigate the process and have a better chance of succeeding.

Meet Dr. Jose Luis Torres, a writer and Professor Emeritus of English at SUNY Plattsburgh, who explains how studying humanities can also lead to stable careers.
Dr. Torres… also known by his pen name J.L. Torres, is a Puerto Rican author and scholar born in Puerto Rico and raised in New York. He tells us his life story, beginning with his experience growing up in the South Bronx, then moving to Puerto Rico as a young adult, and returning to the continental U.S. to pursue his career as a college professor.
J.L. Torres helped us dismantle the myth that those who study humanities will face an uncertain financial future, and shares facts about the multiple CEOs of Fortune 500 companies who studied degrees like English and Philosophy.
Given his vast experience teaching American and Latinx Literature and Creative Writing, as well as his formal education, we couldn’t pass on the opportunity to discuss the term LATINX, its purpose, and the strong reactions it provokes on many people.
We also discussed his recent book Migrations, his upcoming novel about the life of Puerto Rican icon Roberto Clemente, and how he chooses to discuss difficult topics in his literary works that the latinx community often prefers to avoid.
Check out J.L. Torres blog: Why Latinx?

Meet Valeria Aloe, an author with over 20 years of experience in Corporate America, who encourages us to address our mindset to fight for what we deserve.
Valeria is a native of Argentina whose first big move was from the small town of General Belgrano to Buenos Aires, where she became the first in her family to obtain not one but two college degrees.
After quitting her job, Valeria became more involved with the latinx community and realized that we tend to hold certain beliefs that can hold us back from achieving our goals. That experience led her to write her book Uncolonized Latinas: Transforming our Mindsets and Rising Together
