When You Gotta Go, You Gotta Go! - Candid Conversation with Brenda Biekx

38m · Published 12 May 11:34

In this episode, Brenda shares with us how she made the decision to leave home and move to Qatar. Before telling her husband of her plans, she had already weighed what she was willing to lose. With that, the decision might not have been an easy one but it was necessary. Her experience as a co-founder of the Living Library reaffirmed the importance of connecting to humanity in a personal and intimate way. It is exciting to note that soon Brenda will be launching her own podcast based on these interviews called 'Breaking Bread'. Here is an introduction from Brenda herself.

I was born with the name Brenda Biekx, but I also answer to the names: Carina, Crappy, and Miranda depending on when and where you met me.

What I do for a living does not define who I am. What do I do? I teach. I have taught formally from JK to high school. I have taught in highly specialized, segregated schools, and in alternative, wonderfully integrated schools. I have taught French, Science, Math, Reading, English, Yoga, and Sign Language. I have been a teacher for behaviourally exceptional students, for gifted students, and for Deaf students, for kids with Autism, and the myriad kids that come to school and are special just because they are who they are. I have taught in Ontario, in Qatar, and in Pakistan, and I have loved every single student I worked with, and they loved me back. It’s the most rewarding work I’ve had the pleasure to ‘do’. I am ever grateful to free public education.

But who am I?

I am a seeker, even at the level of my soul. I am a seeker of knowledge, of Truth, of adventure, of novelty, of justice, and of connection.

I am a lover. I am a lover of people, of trees, of animals, of spiders and snakes, of water, and of air. I am a lover of travel, of grammar, and of prose and poetry.

I am a student. I learn languages, philosophies, viewpoints, theories, and lifestyles.

I am a live-er. I live my life, and I let you live yours. I live wherever I am. I live in many places and in many hearts. And they live in me.

I am afraid, I am timid, I am intrepid, I am sassy, I am a coward, I am brave, I am loud, I am broken, I am whole.

I am That.

I am.

Freedom for All Begins with You - Candid Conversation with Selam Debs

35m · Published 07 Apr 13:20

Today we are joined by the multi-faceted Selam Debs. She shares with us her anti-racism course outline...a 6 module, 12 week, self-led, online program for individuals, schools and business to become aware of and empowered to abolish the implicit bias and systemic racism pervasive across our country.

Selam and I get emotional talking about being mothers to our young Black sons and Chivonne asks how she can contribute as an active ally. Here is a message from Selam.

To my Black and Brown Sisters and Brothers, Daughters and Sons, I dedicate my work to you. I created my Antiracism Course with one purpose in mind - To create an equitable world for us, for our families. I live and breathe the hope of community where we are seen, heard, savoured, nourished and uplifted.

To my white allies and accomplices, I honour your willingness and readiness to unlearn, unravel, and dismantle systems of privilege from which you benefit, but which leave so many of us, disenfranchised and fighting to thrive. I created my Antiracism Course for you - to re-learn the histories of our Black, Indigenous, Communities of Colour, that were erased from our education systems. I am grateful to be walking on this journey with you.

I am an antiracism educator, an anti-oppression coach, a social justice advocate, a specialist in dismantling anti-Black racism, an accomplice in dismantling anti-Indigenous racism, xenophobia, Islamophobia and a believer in Intersectional and LGBTQ2S+ rights.

I am the founder of Juici Yoga, a yoga and meditation instructor, a restorative yoga teacher trainer, a holistic life coach, a reiki master, and a Lululemon Ambassador.

I AM, first and foremost, A MOTHER.

I am a singer and a songwriter, a poet and a practitioner of self-acceptance, self- love, and radical compassion.

My Antiracism work is rooted in the understanding that we must acknowledge and identify the insidiousness of white supremacy before we can dismantle colonial belief systems. The process of undoing, unlearning and re-educating is necessary for white communities to embark on, to support the healing journey for our racialized families.

My personal yoga and meditation practice is deeply connected to my experience that racism and daily oppression tears apart Black bodies and imparts havoc on our nervous systems. We carry these fear responses through generations and without healing, pass our systems of high-alert survival through our DNA. While racism may seem like theory and concepts for white folx, it is experienced in the bodies of Black people, in a deeply ingrained way.
