Managing reports relating to Video Doorbells and CCTV is an area of great challenge for officers. In this session, recorded during our recent ASB Conference, we touch upon how we can decide what action to take when responding to such reports.

Led by Sharon, our Lead Associate for Harm Centred Practices, it is a must watch for all case officers dealing with these types of reports.

In September 2023, we ran our first virtual ASB Conference. Emma Standing delivered a session called Working in Partnerships with Housing, where she reflected on a case which resulted in an ASB injunction being secured to protect a community from harm, highlighting the importance of partnership working.

Emma is our lead associate for housing and has been specialising in the field of housing related ASB for over 15 years.

Back in September, we held our first-ever Janine Green ASB & Associates Conference, it was a conference that covered many topics including dealing with lower harm cases of ASB. These cases often involve seeking more pragmatic and practical solutions, given legal action is unlikely to be proportionate.

This session includes how to appropriately triage and assess the level of harm in an ASB case and understand the best ways to respond.

Anti-social behaviour (ASB) isn’t a problem exclusive to social housing, yet it can feel more challenging for agencies to deal with when occurring in the private sector,  where they don’t have the deterrence that having a tenancy agreement can bring. 

Changes to the possession process within the private rented sector means likely that agencies may need to step in earlier and do more to help private landlords tackle ASB. 

In this episode, Janine is joined by Sue Bryer, a private landlord trainer who also has experience of renting out properties. They discuss the proposed upcoming changes, as well as some advice and guidance for how agencies and private landlords can best work together to address ASB and support victims. 

A cuckoo takes over the nest of other birds - cuckooing is a term coined to describe the situation when a resident’s home is taken over by others, wishing to utilise the property for criminal activities. This behaviour often creates nuisance and fear for others living in the community. 

What results is a challenging community safety issue, with multiple victims, requiring a true partnership response.

In this episode, Janine is joined by Jo Grimshaw, Head of ASB and Partnerships at Surrey Police, who is leading the way in tackling these problems quickly and effectively. Jo will share her observations of the issue, as well as some best practice tips and guidance on how best to manage cases like these.

I am delighted, therefore, to be joined this episode by Kim Newman, who works with organisations to help them with collaborative working. 

Kim brings some practical tips and suggestions for helping to improve partnership arrangements and ensure that you can respond to ASB cases most effectively and stop the harm at the earliest possible stage. 

Child Criminal Exploitation (CCE) is something that front-line ASB, Housing and Community Safety officers may encounter and it is therefore very important that officers are trained to recognise it, handle it sensitively and ensure that the right people and agencies are made aware.

I was thrilled to welcome Nikki Holmes, a safeguarding expert, onto the latest episode and she provides some fascinating insights into the problem, as well as (most importantly, perhaps) some practical tips and guidance that you can apply to your day to day work.

In this episode, Janine is joined by Ben Archer, a PhD student at Sheffield Hallam University. Ben is undertaking his research into the Public Spaces Protection Order (PSPO), considered by many to be one of the most controversial powers arising from the ASB, Crime and Policing Act 2014. 

Ben explores some of his early findings, in relation to how the PSPO is being used, some tips on best practice, and details on how you can help shape this important piece of work.
