Cracking the Code on Sleep in Menopause

33m · Published 25 Aug 16:38

Sleep! Almost all of us want more or better sleep. Some of us struggle with it. Especially during the menopausal journey. And you sure can’t create your kick ass next chapter when you’re dragging your see through the day.  So todays episode is all about sleep!  I

I really struggled with insomnia  and constant wale ups during my menopausal journey. Not having enough energy to get through the day to only lay awake all night was truly awful.  I became obsessed with sleep. I thought about all day, I read all the latest research, tried all the supplements and wore the sleep devices and still couldn’t get relief.  I finally did but it was a long road.

Thats why I’m excited to share my guest today, Dr. Shelby Harris. She is a behavioural sleep expert who shares her insights, tips and strategies (some of which might sound counter intuitive) for how we can improve our sleep.

We talk about:

  • Why sleep is so important
  • Getting the right amount of quality sleep
  • How we inadvertently create and perpetuate our sleep issues
  • Why you shouldn’t try to make up for a bad night of sleep
  • Common sleep disruptors
  • Tips and strategies for better sleep (some of which might sound counter intuitive)

If you find yourself struggling with sleep issues, you’re going to want to listen to this one.

Dr. Harris is in private practice in White Plains, NY where she specializes in the use of Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) for anxiety and depression. She is board certified in Behavioral Sleep Medicine (BSM) by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine and treats a wide variety of sleep disorders (insomnia, nightmares, circadian rhythm disorders, narcolepsy, apnea treatment noncompliance) using evidence-based non-pharmacological treatments.

Dr. Harris has been an invited columnist for the New York Times "Consults Blog," Dr. Oz's website "You Beauty," and Psychology Today and is frequently quoted in the media, including such publications as The New York Times, The Huffington Post, The New Yorker, Wall Street Journal, O Magazine, and New York Magazine. She has appeared on the Today Show, World News with Diane Sawyer, Good Morning America, ABC7-NY's Eyewitness News, CBS News and ABC's Primetime: Live.

She is also the author of a book called  The woman’s guide to overcoming insomnia.

Freedom, Independence and Income in your Next Chapter

38m · Published 11 Aug 14:59

So many of us resign ourselves to soul sucking jobs and careers that no longer serve us because we think that we have no choice.  I know what feels like and honestly that’s what kept me stuck for longer than I care to admit. The truth is however, that we do have choices and it is possible to get paid for doing what you love.

Today I’m chatting with Kathryn Birchwood who is an income strategist and mentor for women over 40 who want to leave their souls destroying jobs and learn how to repurpose their skills, talents and experience, to enjoy the fulfilling work you were made to do.

Kathryn shares her experience with creating a career that aligns with who she is and her skills and abilities and how she helps other women do the same.

We talk about :

- What keeps us stuck in jobs that no longer serve us

- Why we feel like we don’t have options.

- The power of making a decision

- Opting out of the gender pay gap

- Seeing ourselves beyond our job title.

- Uncovering our passion and purpose

- The keys to repackaging our knowledge and skills to create work that fuels our  soul.

And so many more great tips and insights for your next career or even just a second income stream.

If you find yourself dreading Monday mornings  in your soul sucking job you’re going to want to listen to this one.

About Kathryn:

Kathryn Birchwood spent more than two decades in the corporate world. Her direct experience on the short end of the gender pay-gap drove home to her that women would always be on the losing end when at the mercy of others who determine their financial reward.

Needing to escape the corporate grind for greater independence, she began converting her skills, talent and experience into ways of earning income that were more fulfilling, and allowed her to use more of her capabilities. From learning to trade the stock market to consulting to online marketing to mentoring, Kathryn has reinvented herself multiple times. She is on a mission to help other women to escape the drudgery of unfulfilling work by reinventing the way they earn income.

Shifting Midlife Mindset for Fat Loss & Fitness

45m · Published 16 Jun 06:45

Weight loss is probably one of the most talked about subjects when it comes to midlife and menopause. I don't think there’s anyone who has not struggled with this at some point on the midlife journey.  But like everything else at this time of life, things change. What used to work for you no longer does and it can leave you feeling frustrated and hopeless. I know, I’ve been there.  In todays episode with Amy Ledin, mindset, fitness & lifestyle coach, we talk about how menopause affects the metabolism and how we need to adjust our approach to find success. This is not about new low calorie diets and workouts it's about adjusting our mindset and strategies to work with our changing bodies instead of against them.

I found this to be such an enlightening episode that made so much sense to me. Have a listen and  let me know what you think.

Living in Possibilities

47m · Published 12 May 20:55

I loved the conversation with this week's guest Anne Zuckerman. She started her first successful online  business in her 50’s and has continued to challenge herself and grow well into her 70’s, recently launching a new podcast called “Just Wanted to Ask”.

Anne shares with us her incredible life story about living with the attitude of “it’s possible”. She has proved to us all that staying open to what is possible, and challenging herself to keep learning, has been the key to her success in moving from brick and mortar to online business, and now into the world of podcasting.

I love Anne’s energy and light. When she told me her age I was floored. She has definitely found the fountain of youth through following her passions and staying open to possibility.

Such an inspiring conversation. It made me excited for what I'm going to be doing in my 70’s and beyond.  Anne is a true inspiration.  This episode is a must listen. I know you will be as inspired as I was.

The Crisis in the Midlife Awakening

47m · Published 27 Apr 02:49

In today's episode, the conversation is with speaker, fashion designer, and host of Menopause Whilst Black podcast, Karen Arthur. We chat about the menopausal journey and what we can learn from it as a necessary process to get us to our next chapter.  Her story shares a lot of similarities to my menopause journey.  In our discussion, we speak about the lessons and gifts that we are given throughout this process. Karen shares her midlife “crisis” that began with the exit from a 28-year career in education to living her dream as a fashion designer and returning to her love of dancing.  We talk about slowing down the busyness, taking up space in our lives, listening to the wisdom of our bodies, and learning to trust ourselves as we tap into the many chapters within all of us.

Would love to hear your thoughts on this episode. Have you had a similar experience in your menopause journey?

More about Karen:

Founder and host of Menopause Whilst Black podcast, Karen provides a much-needed platform that’s dedicated to addressing the unique issues Black women face as we navigate menopause and aging. In her discussions with guests, she sheds light on the lived experiences of Black women struggling with disparities in care (and concern) for our health and well-being – from both the medical community and the communities in which we live.
