Lesson #12 - Be First

5m · Published 09 Nov 04:00

This lesson is NOT about teaching your student to "be first" in line!  That seems to be a natural tendency for kids and they don't need to be taught that :)   This episode actually encourages children to initiate and start in a variety of areas of their lives.  We talk about being first to help someone or being first to reach out to a friend or being first to apologize.   When a student feels that they can start something good they feel empowered.

Lesson #11 - Homework Strategies - Momentum or Knockout

6m · Published 02 Nov 04:00

Getting homework done can be very challenging for many students.  In this episode we discuss how it is, "the start that stops us" and how to overcome that.  Using either a Momentum or Knockout strategy provides your child with a game plan.  With momentum, your child starts with easy work and builds up.  With knockout, your child completes the most difficult work first and gets it out of the way...

Lesson #10 - Apologize

6m · Published 26 Oct 03:00

Children often have the misperception that apologizing is an admission of guilt.  They can incorrectly pair feeling "less than" when they apologize and acknowledge mistakes, and they may want to avoid that.  In this lesson we discuss the value of apologizing and how it can actually strengthen relationships.

Lesson #9 - Appreciate The Small Stuff

6m · Published 23 Oct 14:03

While the big ticket items such as a vacation can bring us some joy and wonderful memories, sustained happiness actually comes from the small stuff in life.  Experiences that are free, daily, and easy to do are what make up most of life.  Children love knowing that they can find small stuff experiences that bring them joy.

Lesson 7: S.I.T. = Solve. Improve. Tolerate.

9m · Published 04 Oct 17:00

In this episode I introduce an acronym that I developed and have used for years in my practice.  When we are faced with a problem we teach our children to first pause (sit) and then try to solve the problem.  If it can't be solved, maybe it can be improved, and if not, then tolerated.

Lesson 6: Change Your GOT To to a GET TO

8m · Published 27 Sep 17:00

Change one vowel - Change your life!  Well that may be a bit of an exaggeration!  However, when we teach our children that what seems like an arduous obligation can actually be an opportunity or privilege.

Before the pandemic many children would say, "I got to go to school, ugh."  Now, if they are attending school they say, "I get to go to school."

Lesson #5: Helpful or Hurtful

7m · Published 22 Sep 01:46

Teaching children the simple and binary life skill that everything we say or do is either Helpful or Hurtful to ourselves, others or the world can have a very positive impact.

Often times, making the complexities of life more simplistic can guide our actions and behaviors.
