S2E4 - The Snallygaster (Feat. Sarah Cooper) and The Black Eyed Children

25m · Published 26 Apr 00:00

Driving South from Abilene to San Antonio, TX, the Talegaters encounter The Black Eyed Children and are visited by The Snallygaster! The Black Eyed Children are a relatively recent phenomenon only dating back to 1996. A local journalist named Brian Bethel claimed that children with completely blackened eyes aggressively insisted he let them into his car but needed permission before entering similar to vampires. The sensation he received from these children were described as “a soul-wracking fear.” Ever since, many testimonies and CreepyPastas have sprouted across the internet with similar encounters, some even claiming the children had bird feet.

The Snallygaster is not a Texas Legend, but one that began in Fredrick, Maryland. folklorist, Ed Okonowicz wrote the following description: "The creature has been described as having a very long wingspan, claws with sharp talons made of hot glowing metal. A long, pointed beak, and a third red, blazing eye in the middle of its forehead."  Though the Snallygaster began making American headlines in the early 1920’s, their legend crossed the pond with German immigrants in the early 18th century, continuing in Pennsylvania Dutch communities. The word itself stems from the German term, “Schnellegeister,” meaning “quick ghost.”

Sarah Cooper voices Snally Fields, the Snallygaster in this episode. Sarah is the chief curator and founder of The American Snallygaster Museum in Fredrick, MD. You can follow her and stay updated with the museum, events, and all things Snallygaster by following her on Instagram, @americansnallygastermuseum. She also co-hosts the podcast, Manic Pixie Dream Ghouls, so give them a listem!

S2E3 - Lake Worth Monster of Fort Worth, Texas

34m · Published 12 Apr 05:00

When it comes to Cryptids, he is the G.O.A.T. (or at least half goat). We speak, of course, of the The Lake Worth Monster! This week, we hoofed it over to Lake Worth, Texas, just outside of Dallas, for an interview  with their very own semi-aquatic satyr. Lake Worth itself is  a reservoir and recreationional area created in 1914, but it wasn't until 1969 when local teens reported an attack while driving by a horned terror stalking the shore. Ever since, several eye-witnesses have come forward and the legend of the Lake Worth Monster has grown to a point where an annual festival is celebrated in its honor!

The Lake Worth Monster is voiced by fellow Texan, Jonathan Perez. Jonathan now resides in Los Angeles with an extensive career as storyboard artist. You can follow him on Instagram @jonathanbperez and check out his website, JonathanBPerez.com for his professional storyboard art, movie poster designs, and more.

You can check us out on Spotify, Apple, Listen Notes, Deezer, Podchaser, Audible, iHeart Radio, and other podcast directories as well as right here on our very own website. S2E2 - Bloody Mary (Ft. Ash Millman)

28m · Published 29 Mar 05:00

Grab a lit candle, find a mirror, and chant her name 3x!  This week, we summon our guest from all the way the across the pond - the legendary phantom-in-the-reflection herself, BLOODY MARY (Bloody Mary, Bloody Mary)! She is voiced by the equally legendary Ash Millman, video presenter and content producer for Playstation Access & formerly WhatCulture Horror. Follow Ash Millman on Instagram and Twitter @ashmillman.

Take what you know about this centuries-enduring ghost story and toss it out like yesterday's fish & chips, as we discuss three contributing real-life histories that created this campfire cocktail: Queen Mary I, Mary, Queen of Scots, and the blood-bathing Countess Elizabeth Báthory. We also touch on Hanako-San, the Japanese Yokai in the form of a young school girl who haunts the lavatories, as well as several psychological explanations for many of the horrific testimonies akin to Bloody Mary over the years.

You can check us out on Spotify, Apple, Listen Notes, Deezer, Podchaser, Audible, iHeart Radio, and other podcast directories as well as right here on our very own website. We encourage you to share our podcast with others, leave reviews on Apple Podcast, and catch up with any episodes you missed! It would really mean a lot.

S2E1 - The Lady of White Rock Lake

27m · Published 15 Mar 08:00

WE ARE BACK! Welcome to Season 2 of The Talegate Podcast!! Oh, and please excuse that radio interference (it's the second time that's happened). Not sure what that was about or who SQX Monster Radio is, but it's something we are investigating. We've crossed the Louisiana state line into the Lone Star State -- Lake Worth, Dallas, to be exact.

We've picked up a mysterious hitchhiker who relays the haunting and tragic tale of The Lady of White Rock Lake. This local ghost story was first written by Anne Clark in 1943, published by Texas Folklore Society in their, Backwoods to Border anthology, and has endured centuries of scaring the pants off of Texans ever since; such as in Frank X's novel, Neiman-Marcus, Texas: The Story of the Proud Dallas Store which was published precisely one decade later.

Kay-Leigh Hill, the Lady of White Rock Lake, is voiced by actress, Kate Brittain. You can follow Kate on Instagram @little.brittain. You can also catch Kate in March 2022 at the Imperial Centre in Rocky Mount, North Carolina, in the Andrew Lloyd Webber's Whistle Down the Wind.
