Dashboard Chats - The Witch in the Woods and the Dead Children's Playground

16m · Published 12 Jan 12:00

Things get spooky in Alabama as the Talegaters seek the insidious Witch in the Woods, only to stumble upon the most haunted playground in the United States!

The Witch in the Woods is an urban legend passed down in Bama folklore for ages. She is said live in a shack deep within the woods of Gadsden, AL. Residents driving along Hinds Road in Gadsden have often reported a woman stating that she had sold her soul to the devil. Who is this mysterious witch and why does she bedevil the good folks of Gadsden?

Equally as chilling is the haunting of Maple Hill Cemetery in Huntsville, where the ghost of Mary Bibbs is said to rock back and forth from within her mausoleum.  Adjacent to Maple Hill Cemetery is the Dead Children's Playground believed to come to life at night with the spirits of dead children hard at play. Enter at your own risk.

S1E10 - Huggin' Molly of Abbeville

28m · Published 05 Jan 12:00

This quiet town of Abbeville seems innocent at a glance, but restless spirits stalk the night. Huggin’ Molly has her hands full as The Talegaters investigate Alabama’s very own Banshee. But is she as wicked as her legend alludes? Listen and find out!

The unassuming town of Abbeville, AL, warns travelers of their very own resident specter on their welcome sign which features the silhouettes of an evil wraith chasing down a terrified child. This alludes to a story that dates back to Abbeville's founding years, culminating into a modern phantom said to chase down anyone wandering the streets at night, giving them a tight squeeze, and screaming bloody murder into their ears before releasing them and vanishing without a trace. But is Huggin' Molly really as wicked as the stories make out?

Journey with us to this small town to learn about Huggin' Molly, restaurants she's inspired, and even her role in the town's annual Spring festival,
Yatta Abba Day, taken from  the Creek Indian expression for "Grove of Dogwoods."

Dashboard Chats - Florida's Unmarked Graves & McCleary's Sea Serpent

31m · Published 29 Dec 09:00

There's Pandemonium in the Panhandle! A mysterious broadcast filters through the radio of the truck as Cheesehead and Florida Man traverse the Florida Panhandle. Meanwhile, the Talegaters exchange tales from the City of Five Flags: McCleary’s sea serpent, the unmarked graves of Dozier School, a haunted lighthouse, wolves, whiskey, & more!

Off the coast of Pensacola Beach once lurked a oceanic beast whose serpentine head and neck craned 12 feel above the surf. It was hungry for one thing and one thing only: the flesh and bone of the teenage boys hopelessly lost as sea. We follow the story of Brian McCleary, the sole survivor of this vicious and mysterious attack. Don't believe in sea serpents? You will now. Probably.

Florida's panhandle is home to more than just tales of sea serpents and skunk apes. It is home to numerous murders and haunted locations as well. The Talegate Podcast investigates the unmarked graves of the Dozier School boys as well as a very haunted lighthouse who seemed to have a personality all its own.

S1E9 - Christmas Special with La Befana, the Italian Christmas Witch

19m · Published 22 Dec 12:00

Have you been Naughty or Nice? La Befana the Christmas Witch joins Cheesehead and Florida Man in their very first Christmas Special! Hand-gesturing all the way from Italy on her magical broom, La Befana shares the gift of history, rooted in the ancient world, as well as her role with the Three Kings!

La Befana, the Christmas Witch, dips her toes in legends predating Christ himself. The Ancient Greeks, Romans, and various Alpine communities all had myths and stories similar to hers, so it is not a wonder she is so revered and respected in Italy to this day. Befana Day is on Epiphany Eve, January 6th, where children wake up to goodies such as chocolates, fruits, and candies if they have behaved but coal, soap, or garlic if they were were mischievous. Despite being used as propaganda by the Italian Fascist party and having the holiday suspended in the 1970's, Befana Day is alive and well all over Italy and other Alpine regions.

La Befana is voiced by native Italian tour guide, historian, and language teacher, Antonietta Fabiano. You can find her by following the links below:

S1E8 - Railroad Bill, Outlaw of the American South

29m · Published 15 Dec 08:00

It’s a rainy night in the Florida panhandle, but that won’t stop us from interviewing the ghost of a legendary gun-slinger! You may be familiar with the fictional Django Unchained, but did you know there was a real African-American outlaw and hero-of-the-people who once terrorized the Florida railways? Enter Railroad Bill, the slickest bandit in the Southeast.

Morris Slater was a turpentine worker throughout the American Southeast. He was tossed off a moving train by a worker of the Louisville-Nashville Railroad Company and swore vengeance on them for the rest of his days. And, just like that, the anti-hero & desperado, "Railroad Bill" was born. Railroad Bill earned his namesake by harassing the Louisville-Nashville Railroad Company to the point where gunfights broke out. Having successfully evaded some 17 shootouts, killed two sheriffs, and gained a bounty of over $1,250 along with the attention of bounty hunters as far out as Illinois (the Pinkerton among them), Bill finally met his end in 1896 after being caught in the crossfire of bounty-men and police who both were hunting him down to cash in on his reward.

Morris Slater had his corpse paraded around between Alabama and Florida by sheriffs looking to make a quick buck until finally being discarded in an unmarked grave among many other African Americans. His body was later identified and relocated within St. Johns Cemetery in Pensacola, FL, and given a proper tombstone.
