Get richer teacher with Ola Kowalska

by Ola Kowalska

Welcome to the Get Richer Teacher Podcast. My name is Ola and I'll be your guide and mentor on your way to a profitable, sustainable, but most importantly, enjoyable language education business. And why would you care to do that? To build a business like that? Because there is literally no other way.
The language education market is in a bizarre state. Companies making millions in profit yet paying teachers peanuts. Native speakerism is still way too powerful. And finally, the students are bored of the same old formats and messaging telling them to speak like a native.
I'm here to shake things up. To educate and motivate a community of teachers who have the courage to build businesses and teach the language on their own terms, both solo or in their own language schools, and have a positive impact on their students and the world. Because teachers are superheroes. Let's claim it today!

Episode 116 The 5 things every teacher needs to unlearn to make their business more successful

28m · Published 19 Feb 08:00

Being a teacher means you're always learning, teaching or thinking about one of the two. However, there are also beliefs and habits worth unlearning to build more successful, profitable and enjoyable teaching business.

In the newest episode of Get richer, teacher podcast I talk about some false beliefs that keep many language teachers stuck.

Hit the play button above to learn more about how:

  • trading time for money
  • putting too much focus on educating your audience
  • projecting your fears onto others
  • a popular phrase „charge your worth"
  • and gatekeeping brilliance

may be holding you back.

Episode 115 The elements of an effective AND profitable group language program

28m · Published 12 Feb 08:00

What makes a successful group program? I believe it’s about balancing the academic and business side. But how can you achieve that?

In episode 115 of Get richer, teacher podcast I’ll walk you through 4 elements that are crucial for building an extraordinary group language course to make sure it’ll be effective for your students and profitable for you:

  • the importance of having a specific target audience in mind while creating your group program
  • relevant, urgent and measurable outcome of the course
  • structuring the course in a way that helps your students make progress
  • the appeal of time-bound language courses.

If you want to learn and build an effective and profitable language group program, make sure that you join my upcoming FREE challenge 'Language course worth gold'!

Episode 114 How to scale your language business

25m · Published 05 Feb 08:00

When you're teaching one-to-one, there's a limit to how much you can earn. Even if you do and raise your prices, there's only so many hours in a day. I know it is counterintuitive but in order to scale your business you need to not add more (time, offers, clients) but to start doing less.

You can transition from one-on-one to group classes (I talked about this process in episode 113 of my podcast) but that’s only one way in which you can scale your business work less and earn more.

A scaled business is the business that works for you and makes money even if you’re not involved in every process. But how can you get to that place?

In the newest episode of Get richer, teacher! podcast I talk about three areas that you need to work on to prepare yourself for scaling a business: time, work and business model.

Listen to the episode and learn:

– why you need to spend more time on marketing

– what you need to give yourself permission to do

– why delegating and automation should be a priority when you want to scale

– how I juggle running my business and being a mom.

Episode 113 When to move from 1:1s to group teaching

24m · Published 29 Jan 08:00

Sooner or later many language teachers start to think about moving from offering only 1:1 lessons to group programs. But it’s not as simple as grouping together your 1:1 clients based on their CEFR level and telling them „see you on Tuesday at 6 PM”.

First of all, I’m not a fan of creating offers and marketing them based on language proficiency levels. I believe learning languages is not about jumping from one level to another. It’s much more effective to create group programs for clients with similar challenges and needs.

Before you start to create and market your group program you need to do the foundational work – know your audience, then create a minimum viable product and use information from your students to run an effective marketing campaign launch the best possible course.

That’s this week’s episode of Get richer, teacher! podcast I talk all about creating and launching group programs.

Hit the play button above to learn:

  • what is the best time to move from 1:1s to group programs
  • what are the exact steps you need to take and how long can it take (I use my favourite metaphor - the rocket)
  • how I can help you with the process.

Episode 112 How to make your language school profitable

18m · Published 22 Jan 08:00

Managing a profitable language school goes beyond the simple formula of "more clients, more money”.

Whether you have a brick and mortar school or an online one, there are costs involved. The biggest expense is teachers’ salaries, and rightfully so. They are responsible for your students’s success and satisfaction and I believe you shouldn’t cut corners when it comes to their salaries.

If you can’t afford new equipment, software or even your salary, some things must change.

In episode 112 of Get richer, teacher podcast I talk about:

– the biggest expenses in language schools

– pricing strategy and how can you justify charging more than your competition

– stepping away from teaching to avoid burnout and effectively run the business

– being responsible for your employees future.

Running a language school is not a piece of cake but the right mindset and a little bit of strategic planning, you can pave the way for success and profit.

Episode 110 What makes a good language school

19m · Published 08 Jan 08:00

What makes a good language school? As a former owner and manager of language schools I’ve seen a lot! And I believe there are 3 things that your language school needs to call itself a good place.

Leader – that not only puts out fires, create timetables and pay the bills. The visionary and makes space for creativity and growth

People – unfortunately the teachers that actually help the students achieve their goals are often treated like contractors with little to none benefits. I feel it is possible to create a good work environment where teachers are respected and develop their skills.

Community & impact – a good language school can help people on a larger scale by creating better programs, better customer experience and better workspace.

Episode 109 Who is your ideal student

15m · Published 01 Jan 08:00

Knowing who your ideal client is makes it easier to create offers and be consistent with your marketing. But how do you find this ideal client?

It’s not only about personality alignment (but yes, you want to work with people who you like). Think about the common struggles and goals that people in your target audience have. Who you enjoy working with and what characteristics they have?Consider their demographics, language level, and even how much they earn. Remember that an ideal student is an existing person who needs your help.

Your marketing and offers should speak directly to your ideal student. Addressing their unique needs and challenges will make your marketing more effective and your offers more relevant.

Tune into the episode to learn more and find out who your ideal client is!

Episode 108 Three things that are holding you back from progress in your business

22m · Published 18 Dec 08:00

Just like planning a road trip, building a successful business requires a few key elements. First, you need to ensure that your business is functioning well, just like checking your car before hitting the road. This means having a clear map or goal to work towards, as well as knowing that you have support along the way. Trust me, having someone to keep you company and provide support makes the journey much more enjoyable and easier.

Now, when it comes to setting goals for your business, I believe in focusing on the journey rather than a super specific destination. Instead, break your goals into smaller, more manageable milestones that you can achieve in around three months. These short-term goals will keep you motivated and help you track your progress effectively.

You also need a fully-functioning car, a map and FUEL.

To find out what these are in your own marketing journey, listen to this week's episode!

Episode 107 What to actually focus on in marketing your teaching business

19m · Published 11 Dec 08:00

Marketing may seem overwhelming because of the amount of advice out there and especially if you're a teacher (and let's be honest - business has never been part of the curriculum while studying to become a teacher, right?!)

But it's actually quite simple. It's not posting more or having a massive audience that cuts it.

To get started, I recommend conducting an audit of your past marketing efforts. What has worked for you in the past? Have you offered special deals, asked your current clients for referrals, or received recommendations through word of mouth? These insights will help you identify what strategies have brought in clients and guide your future marketing efforts.

Next, let's talk about attraction. Organic posting on social media may not be as effective as you think. In fact, less than 2% of my audience growth came from organic posting. So, it's time to explore other avenues.

Once you've attracted people to your world, it's essential to nurture them. Engage with your audience through regular posting, live sessions, newsletters, and authentic content that showcases your true values.

Finally, we come to conversion—the stage where you help your engaged audience decide to work with you. Don't shy away from making offers.

Tune into this episode to learn more about what actually moves the needle in marketing your business!
