Talking FTD: Connecting Beyond Dementia

31m · Published 25 Apr 18:00
Sharon Hall will be joined by Rebekah Wilson, MSW, www.agingcarecoach.com for this podcast on connecting to those living with dementia. Can you connect to the person you married or a family member in a different way after diagnosis? Should you? Many care partners had a very rocky pre-diagnosis time. Some dealt with firings over inappropriate behavior, some with affairs, some with loss of a life savings, some with arrests, gambling, drinking, and reckless behavior and even violence. Some dealt with law suits over auto accidents, sexual harrasment, shoplifting and other legal issues. How do you heal those awful wounds of betrayal? Can you just "shut off" the negative feelings and accept these issues were driven by a dying brain? Many people struggle to "love" the person they care for after they caused devastation in their lives. We will discuss what love means before and after diagnosis and how it might change. We will talk about how you can survive and even thrive, even after events that broke you in ways that seemed irreperable. We will talk about surviving and thriving during this diagnosis. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/caring-conversations/message

Meet a Caregiving Visionary Award Winner: Naomi Bourgeois

29m · Published 15 Apr 15:00
Through her company, Kikupal, Naomi is on a mission to change the way we give and receive help. Naomi launched her company after caring for her husband, Greg, while she managed her career and raised their two young children. Naomi is changing the way we support caregivers in the most significant way -- by helping them delegate daily tasks. On average, caregivers spend 13 days a month on tasks such as shopping, food preparation, housekeeping, laundry, transportation, and giving medication. By delegating these tasks, a family caregiver can use time more effectivey on what matters most. Kikupal helps family and friends gift helpful services by purchasing KikuPoints, which can be redeemed to help the family caregiver with meals, house cleaning, and more. For more information, visit https://www.kikupal.com. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/caring-conversations/message

Shawn, who cares for her husband, launched a non-profit called Caregivers on the Homefront. Through her non-profit, Shawn leads Caregiver Mental Health and Wellness Restorative Weekends. "One of the things that we teach in our restorative weekends is how caregiving is a role that we play," Shawn says. "It is NOT our identity. When we lose our identity that is when the stress of caregiving can step in a wreak havoc on our lives. It is a hard enough journey in itself.
