Sharon Hall, an FTD care partner and Rebekah Wilson, MSW, The Aging Care Coach (agingcarecoach.com) will discuss what has been in the news a lot lately, intimacy and love in the middle of dementia.
B Smith has Alzheimer's, and a recent article about her husband having a female companion who he brings into their home and who also helps with B's care has caused quite a curfuffle. This subject is brought up a lot in the FTD community because so many are so young and have a full life ahead of them, beyond care parterning for their spouse.
Let's get this out in the open and talk about it. Rebekah has talked about sex and dementia and she will share her insights. Sharon will share how she feels about this, as well. Join us for an open, honest discussion. If this is not your cup of tea, please understand this will be R rated.

Sharon Hall and Janelle Drake, who both have husbands diagnosed with FTD, will discuss what we had to learn the hard way and what we want people newly diagnosed to know that will help them deal with this diagnosis.
No one can know what it is like to live through a frontotemporal dementia diagnosis better than those who have been there. Sharon and Janelle will share their trials and tribulations that followed the diagnosis. It takes an average of 4 years to get a frontotemporal diagnosis. During that time, the frustration and the feeling of not being heard becomes overwhelming. When we finally get a diagnosis, the relief and grief set in and we then say, now what?
We will try to address the now what question, by telling you what we found to be the most valuable information.

Welcome to the Empowered Family Caregiver Podcast with Tandy Elisala
Episode 31 Interview with Beth Scibienski
I had the distinct pleasure of interviewing Beth Scibienski on my Empowered Family Caregiver podcast. We talked about her journey with her late husband, Pete and the power of compassion and vulnerability. We also discussed Beth’s new book, Who Is God When We Hurt? and what inspired her to write this book. Beth shares a useful and thoughtful tip about the power of having a sacred inner circle.
We also talked about how difficult things can be during the holiday. Hear Beth’s advice to reduce caregiver stress, how she found her best during what seemed like her worst, what she is grateful for and her advice for keeping hope alive.
Beth Scibienski is the pastor of Grace Presbyterian Church, a vibrant congregation in central NJ, who loves, learns and laughs together. She started working at Grace one month before her late husband was diagnosed with Secondary Progessive Multiple Sclerosis. Learn more about Beth here: www.bethscib.com

Many people believe that addiction and substance abuse are only problems young people struggle with. That is sadly, a huge misconception. In reality, substance abuse in baby boomers and older generations is a growing public health concern and can cause havoc in families and much stress in caregivers.
My guest today is Dr. Julie Davelman who is a Clinical Psychologist with Abrams Psychological Services. Dr. Davelman and I discuss such important topics as how large a problem is this, what arethe warning signs families should be aware of, unique triggers in an older person and how can families raise this issue and begin seeking help.
You can learn more about Dr. Davelman and connect with her for further questions and advice by visiting her website at www.abramspsychservices.com and read her blog at https://drdavelman.wordpress.com/
I will also be posting some further resources on my Facebook Page - "On The Frontlines of Caregiving" - www.facebook.com/FrontlinesofCaregiving

Does the thought of the upcoming holidays fill you with dread instead of joy? Does seeing all the sparkly commercials with bright eyed children playing pianos and cute dogs snuggled by the fireplace wearing hats make you question your own life? Well - you're not alone!!
The holidays can be wonderful, joyous times, but for caregivers also come with unique stresses and feelings of loss.
On today's show, I have a great conversation with Rick Lauber who is the author of 2 caregiving books - "Caregivers Guide for Canadians" and "The Successful Caregivers Guide." We discuss some down to earth tips to help you navigate this time and hopefully reduce your stress.
Rick also is offering free copies of his book "The Successful Caregivers Guide" as a gift to you.
Head on over to:
Facebook Page: "On the Frontlines of Caregiving" In the comments section - post a picture of your stress-busting pet or write 1 way you have found useful to combat holiday stress
Rick and I will select three lucky winners and your book will be shipped to your home.
Good luck and I sincerely hope you can carve out some time for yourselves and your holidays bring you joy and peace.
Lynette
