Australia reports one of the highest incidences of skin cancer globally, with rates surpassing those in Canada, the US, and the UK, with melanoma alone being responsible for more young Australian deaths than any other single cancer. These statistics underline the critical importance of awareness, prevention, and early detection.

In this enlightening episode, I’m thrilled to welcome Jane Homberger, skin cancer advocate and CEO of Skin Smart Australia. Jane's dedication to the cause and her pioneering work with Skin Smart Australia offer invaluable insights and practical tools to empower our listeners to take charge of their skin health.

We'll explore the different types of skin cancer, spotlight the alarming prevalence in Australia, and discuss groundbreaking research and awareness initiatives.

Jane will share her inspiring journey into skin cancer medicine and outline simple yet effective strategies everyone can adopt to monitor their skin and spot potential warning signs early.

Key Takeaways from Jane:

  1. Understand Your ABCDE: Learn what asymmetry, border irregularities, colour variation, diameter, and evolution signify in moles and why they matter.
  2. Melanoma Awareness: Discover why melanomas might develop from moles you've had all your life and how to stay vigilant.
  3. The Importance of Mole Mapping: Hear why mole mapping should be integral to your annual health check-up.

Our aim with this episode is more than just to inform; it inspires action and stimulates a conversation about proactive skin health practices. Whether you've been diligent about skin cancer prevention or are just beginning to understand its importance, this episode is a must-listen.

Vitamin D, Sunscreen and Everything in Between with Mathew Collett, CEO, Solar-D Derma-Tech

42m · Published 04 Mar 21:00

You need sun protection as much as you need vitamin D. But can you have both, without skin damage or nutritional deficiency?

Vitamin D is essential for our well-being, promoting bone growth and supporting a robust immune system. Deficiency in this vital nutrient can lead to a host of health issues, including osteoporosis and a weakened immune response.

While our skin produces vitamin D when exposed to sunlight, many people believe that using sunscreen and other forms of sun protection can lead to vitamin D deficiency. As a result, they often resort to unprotected sun exposure to obtain adequate levels of the vitamin. However, this approach can expose them to a new set of serious health risks.

For the first episode of the much-awaited comeback of the Dermhealth.Co Podcast powered by Digital Health Co, we are talking about vitamin D, sunscreen and everything in between with Mathew Collett, CEO of Solar-D Derma-Tech.

Mathew shares his knowledge on the importance of balancing sun protection and vitamin D production. He explains how Solar-D technology creates sunscreens that allow the skin to produce vitamin D while still providing broad-spectrum protection.

Key points covered in the episode:

  1. Vitamin D is actually a steroid hormone produced by the body when exposed to UVB light from the sun. It plays a crucial role in strengthening cells and boosting the immune system.
  2. Traditional sunscreens can inhibit vitamin D production by up to 99%, contributing to widespread vitamin D deficiency.
  3. Practitioners should educate clients on the importance of sensible sun exposure and recommend sunscreens that promote vitamin D production while still offering adequate protection.
  4. Solar-D's technology can be incorporated into various skincare products, including tinted moisturisers, face creams, and haircare products, making it a game-changer in the skincare industry.
