Vitamin D, Sunscreen and Everything in Between with Mathew Collett, CEO, Solar-D Derma-Tech

42m · Published 04 Mar 21:00

You need sun protection as much as you need vitamin D. But can you have both, without skin damage or nutritional deficiency?

Vitamin D is essential for our well-being, promoting bone growth and supporting a robust immune system. Deficiency in this vital nutrient can lead to a host of health issues, including osteoporosis and a weakened immune response.

While our skin produces vitamin D when exposed to sunlight, many people believe that using sunscreen and other forms of sun protection can lead to vitamin D deficiency. As a result, they often resort to unprotected sun exposure to obtain adequate levels of the vitamin. However, this approach can expose them to a new set of serious health risks.

For the first episode of the much-awaited comeback of the Dermhealth.Co Podcast powered by Digital Health Co, we are talking about vitamin D, sunscreen and everything in between with Mathew Collett, CEO of Solar-D Derma-Tech.

Mathew shares his knowledge on the importance of balancing sun protection and vitamin D production. He explains how Solar-D technology creates sunscreens that allow the skin to produce vitamin D while still providing broad-spectrum protection.

Key points covered in the episode:

  1. Vitamin D is actually a steroid hormone produced by the body when exposed to UVB light from the sun. It plays a crucial role in strengthening cells and boosting the immune system.
  2. Traditional sunscreens can inhibit vitamin D production by up to 99%, contributing to widespread vitamin D deficiency.
  3. Practitioners should educate clients on the importance of sensible sun exposure and recommend sunscreens that promote vitamin D production while still offering adequate protection.
  4. Solar-D's technology can be incorporated into various skincare products, including tinted moisturisers, face creams, and haircare products, making it a game-changer in the skincare industry.

Dry skin is a common health condition. It occurs when the skin lacks the oils and moisture it requires to stay healthy. Dry skin can be uncomfortable, itchy, red, and scaly. It can be a result of environmental variables such as chilly temperatures or dry air. It might also be brought on by medical diseases like diabetes, dehydration, and eczema.

Although dry skin is usually temporary, there are types of dry skin that could last year-round.

Chapped Lips 101 with Dr Julia Rhodes

29m · Published 26 Jul 02:35

Because lips don't have any oil glands, their skin is thinner and more delicate than the skin on the rest of the body. They run the danger of getting dry and chapped as a result. Lips are more exposed to the elements than the rest of the body and can develop chapped skin through exposure to the sun, dry air, or extreme cold.

Many of us encounter chapped lips in the winter, which are inflamed, dry, and peeling lips brought on by disruption of the outer skin layer.

Cheilitis, the medical term for chapped lips, can result from exposure to an allergen or a medical condition.

In this week's podcast episode, Marni will be speaking with Dr Julia Rhodes,  award-winning Melbourne-based dermatologist and the founder of Spotlight on Skin.

She is passionate about demystifying the confusing world of skincare by providing evidence-based, unbiased information so that you can make informed decisions when it comes to your skin.
