35m · Published 21 Apr 09:00

Boundaries...What are those? Boundaries are one of the ways in which we define who we are, how we interact with others and what is acceptable. Establishing boundaries is one of the best ways to preserve your emotional energy and define who and what you allow in your life. Most importantly, you teach people how to treat you. -Linda Esposito

Social Media Ain't Your Therapist: Episode 31

38m · Published 07 Apr 09:00

The connection between poor mental health and social media apps is scary. In spring of 2021, the Reboot Foundation surveyed more than 1,000 Americans on their social media usage and its impact on their mental health. More than half of the people who took part in the survey acknowledged that their social media use intensified their feelings of anxiety, depression, or loneliness. They also knew that it contributed to feelings of low self-esteem and made it harder for them to concentrate. Yet, we don’t have more doctors, schools, and community groups speaking out against it. In this episode we speak on it…

Are We Our Own Worst Enemy: Episode 30

51m · Published 24 Mar 09:00

#Depression and #anxiety can be significantly influenced by our self-critical voice and subsequent behaviors. Yes, there was a Jim Crow era. Yes, there was slavery. But, contrary to unpopular opinion, we have progressed, and we have excelled as a people. Today we will discuss if old ideology is creating cognitive dissonance and a lack of real effort to continue to progress. #mentalhealthawareness

How Can I Support Black Women: Episode 29

45m · Published 10 Mar 11:48

Episode summary introduction: As Black women, we are often seen as matriarchs and leaders of our families and communities. Whether it is in the role of girlfriend, wife, mother, sister, aunt, friend, employee, co-worker, caretaker, or business owner, we give out a lot. And it seems we are expected to proudly serve in these roles since we are often referred to as “the strong black woman.” However, it can become exhausting to constantly be on point at all times and we may neglect our psychological needs. One way to prevent this is to explore our needs and ask yourself: What do I need from me? From others? Or in general… Let’s talk about it #mentalhealth #awareness #supportwomen

In the worst of cases, it can transform into rage and isolation. In this episode, we explore toxic masculinity and what it means to our current society. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/speakingwithgravity/message

Speaking Truthfully: Episode 26

45m · Published 15 Dec 10:00
From the time we are born, we are strongly influenced or conditioned to be a certain way by our parents or guardians. That guidance from those in control of our lives can be encouraging and expand our sense of self OR it can diminish and stifle who we really are. Being stifle prevents us from finding purpose, because who you are is essential for accomplishing that bigger goal. In this episode we explore who you really are through a line of questioning that will be sure to make you think, make you feel, and hopefully you do what's best for you. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/speakingwithgravity/message

Church and Mental Health: Episode 24

44m · Published 17 Nov 10:00

Literature suggests that African Americans are much more likely to rely on their faith as a coping mechanism for dealing with depression and anxiety than they are to utilize a mental health professional. One study found that 90% of African Americans reported use of religion in coping and dealing with mental health issues. In other words, many African Americans, rather than seeking support in the form of a mental health professional, go to the church. Today we discussed the role of the church in improving or worsening mental wellness in the African American community (Victor Armstrong/ https://afsp.org/story/the-role-of-th...)
