Ep 18. Racism in Medicine

28m · Published 19 Mar 01:00

Did you know that in the UK people from Black African, African Caribbean and South Asian backgrounds are at risk of developing type 2 diabetes 15 years earlier than Caucasian people. Rates of cardiovascular disease, the leading cause of death in the UK, is highest in the South Asian population. Research suggests that experiencing racism can have a negative impact on mental health yet detention rates under the Mental Health Act during 2017/18 were four times higher for people in the ‘Black’ or ‘Black British’ group than those in the ‘White’ group.

In this episode I am joined by Layo Soruna, president of the Newcastle University Racial Equality in Medicine Society as we unpacked why these disparities exist and what we can do about them.
