231 - Little Things Build a Dad's Legacy
18m · PublishedThis past week we had the opportunity to go to Springdale Arkansas to celebrate my mom's 80th Birthday and have a family reunion. All 8 of us siblings were able to come along with a lot of the grand and great grandkids. We had such a fun time together. As I watched the interaction and love between everyone I thought about the little things my dad did with my mom to create such an amazing legacy for our family.
Caught up in the minutiae of life you can’t see the impact you are having. But from the lens of time, we can see how little things add up. If I were to sum up the little things that my dad did it would be
- Showed us that Mom was preeminent in his life and heart
- He made time for us kids
- He taught us to work and worked beside us
- He played with us
- He owned his mistakes, said he was sorry, and showed more love after
I hope you enjoy this episode and that something touches your heart.
Cheers

230 - Happy Father's Day
15m · PublishedHappy Father's Day
I wanted to wish you a Happy Father's Day and share a few thoughts with you
- Dads are critically important!
- Mad respect for single moms and single dads
- Many kids struggle because they have a huge hole in their hearts in the shape of their father; abandoned, abusive, oppressive, in the room but not involved, addicted,
- You don’t need to be the perfect dad, throw out perfection and replace it with purpose, involvement, leadership, mentorship, fun, playfulness and a whole lot of love. Your kids don’t need you to be perfect they need you in their lives.
I hope you have a GREAT day with your kids!
Cheers!

229 - The power of a dad's touch
15m · PublishedRecently I had the opportunity to go to Orlando Florida to watch my mentor and personal coach give the keynote speech at the MOAA Conference. He shared a story about his father and how his father attempted to bridge the gap of years of strain by lovingly placing his hand on his shoulder. His story has made me think of how many children are yearning, hoping for a dad's touch. A dad's love!
I also share a story I had with my own dad where he extended a hand of love and mended a little boy's heart.
I'd love to hear your stories of how you've connected with your dad, or maybe even still trying to figure out how to connect!
Have a Blessed day! Thanks for tuning in!

227 - Memorial Day Tribute Pt 1 - What it's like to be deployed and be a dad?
28m · PublishedToday I want to take a moment to recognize the men and women (and their families) who have given so much for us to enjoy the freedoms that we enjoy. I thought it would be fitting to revisit two episodes with men who are serving or who have services and talk about the challenges of being a dad while serving in the military. In part 1 we will revisit a conversation with my brother Mike Sedrick. He shares the challenge he and his family have experienced when he is deployed on military assignments. Many families experience this challenge so I thought it'd be great to sit down with him to hear some of the things they've done before, during, and after the deployment.
Thank you to all of you men and women who serve our country!

226 - Dad's Grieve Too!
35m · PublishedWe rarely talk about grief. And as men, we often avoid the conversation entirely. This puts men in a real corner when we lose a loved one - a parent, spouse, friend, and even a child. When confronting we tend to isolate, self-medicate, avoid, and sometimes do all three rather than face the very real emotions associated with losing a loved one.
In this episode, I sit down with Andy Bohart, host of the TikTok channel DadsGrieve2, and we have a very raw and heartfelt discussion about the loss of his son and working through the very real feelings associated with grief.
Show Highlights:
00:00 Intro
02:00 We don’t talk about grief - What do I say?
05:30 Men haven’t been taught to deal with emotions
8:30 Grieving along side of your wife
12:00 There is no timeline for grief
17:00 “What IS your son’s name?”
20:30 People mourn differently
24:00 Telling stories about our loved ones
28:30 Working through loss

225 - Yes, You Deserve It
8m · PublishedWhy do we as dad's sometimes feel like we don't deserve good things? We put everyone else first and when we finally do one thing nice for ourself we feel guilty about it?
What has your experience been with doing something nice for you? You feel guilty or no?
224 - On The Outside Looking In
21m · PublishedThis past weekend at my daughter Ke'ilani's graduation from UVU I found myself for the first time standing on the outside looking in and it honestly threw me off for a second. Dad has been replaced - which is the pattern of life but the experience caught me completely off guard.
I thought I'd share some feelings about how I'm embracing the reality of my baby girl moving on to the next chapter of her life and actually loving what I see evolving for her and our family.
I'd love to hear your thoughts!
