Cheapest and Most Expensive Appliances

29m · Published 08 Jan 10:53

The cost of running appliances in your home can vary depending on factors such as energy efficiency, usage patterns, and local utility rates. However, some appliances generally tend to consume more energy and can be more expensive to run. Here are some examples:

  1. Heating and Cooling Systems: HVAC systems, including air conditioners and electric heaters, can be significant contributors to high energy bills, especially if they are older or inefficient.

  2. Refrigerators and Freezers: These appliances are always on, and their energy consumption can add up over time. Old or inefficient models may use more energy than newer, energy-efficient ones.

  3. Water Heaters: Water heaters, especially those that rely on electricity, can be energy-intensive. Tankless water heaters are generally more energy-efficient than traditional tank-style heaters.

  4. Clothes Dryers: Electric clothes dryers consume a considerable amount of energy. Using a clothesline or opting for a gas dryer can be more energy-efficient alternatives.

  5. Ovens and Stoves: Electric ovens and stoves can use a significant amount of energy, particularly if used frequently. Gas-powered alternatives are often more energy-efficient.

  6. Dishwashers: Older or less efficient dishwashers may use more water and energy. Using energy-efficient models or washing dishes by hand can be more sustainable options.

  7. Computers and Home Office Equipment: Computers, printers, and other electronic devices in your home office can contribute to energy costs, especially if left on when not in use.

To reduce energy costs, consider investing in energy-efficient appliances, using appliances during off-peak hours, and practicing energy-saving habits such as turning off lights and unplugging electronics when not in use. Additionally, conducting a home energy audit can help identify specific areas where you can improve energy efficiency.

Episode Title: It Happened to Me: Stories from the Field

15m · Published 18 Dec 09:25

Larry spent a whole Sunday clearing a drain clog in a sewer line at a rental house. This is the story and how to prevent these types of problems.

Flushing certain items down the drain can lead to clogs, plumbing issues, and environmental problems. Here are the top five things that homeowners should avoid flushing down the drain:

1.Grease and Cooking Oils:

oPouring grease and cooking oils down the drain might seem convenient, but they can solidify and cause blockages in your pipes over time. Instead, let them cool and solidify in a container, then dispose of them in the trash.

2.Flushable Wipes:

oDespite the label "flushable," many wipes do not break down as easily as toilet paper and can contribute to blockages in sewage systems. It's better to dispose of them in the trash.

3.Paper Towels and Tissues:

oWhile toilet paper is designed to break down in water, paper towels and tissues are more durable and can cause clogs in pipes. Dispose of them in the trash rather than flushing them.

4.Medications:

oFlushing expired or unused medications down the drain can contribute to water pollution and harm aquatic ecosystems. Instead, participate in a medication take-back program or follow proper disposal guidelines provided by local authorities.

5.Dental Floss:

oDental floss is not biodegradable and can contribute to clogs. It can also wrap around and damage plumbing components. Dispose of dental floss in the trash.

Remember, the best way to prevent plumbing issues is to be mindful of what goes down the drain. If you're unsure about the flushability of an item, it's generally safer to dispose of it in the trash. Regular maintenance, such as using drain screens and scheduling professional inspections, can also help prevent costly plumbing problems.

Building a Simple Workbench for Children

26m · Published 04 Dec 09:51

I have a client whose child loves to study bugs. The problem is, he brings them into the house. I was asked to build a workbench that could sit outside on the deck giving this young man a place to work. A build project was born

Building a children's workbench can be a fun and educational project that can provide your child with a creative space for various activities. This is a quick build and one that can easily be done as a last minute Christmas present.

Here are some tips to help you build a safe and functional children's workbench:

Safety First:

Use child-safe materials: Ensure that all materials used are non-toxic and free of sharp edges or harmful chemicals.

Rounded edges: Sand down and round off any sharp edges or corners to prevent accidents.

Appropriate Size:

Make the workbench at an appropriate height for your child, ensuring they can comfortably reach and work on it. A good rule of thumb is to make it about waist height for your child.

Consider your child's age and size when determining the dimensions of the workbench.

Simple Design:

Keepthe design simple and age-appropriate. A basic table or bench with a flat working surface is a good starting point.

As your child grows and gains more skills, you can add features like shelves, drawers, and tool racks.

Sturdy Construction:

Use strong and durable materials such as solid wood or plywood for the workbench to ensure stability.

Secure all joints and connections properly to prevent wobbling or collapsing.

Non-Slip Surface:

Use a non-slip surface for the workbench top, such as rubber or textured material, to help keep projects in place and reduce the risk of accidents.

Child-Sized Tools:

Provide your child with child-sized tools, such as a small hammer, screwdriver, and a set of safety goggles. These tools should be easy to handle and safe for children to use.

Organization and Storage:

Include storage space or a pegboard for organizing tools and materials. This helps teach your child about keeping a tidy workspace.

Use clear containers for storing small parts and supplies so they can easily see and access their materials.

Personalization:

Allow your child to personalize their workbench by painting or decorating it with their favorite colors and designs.

Supervision:

Always supervise your child while they're using the workbench, especially if they are using tools or materials that may pose a safety risk.

Teach Proper Usage:

Take the time to teach your child how to use tools safely and provide guidance on the specific projects they can work on.

Encourage Creativity:

Make the workbench a space for creativity, where your child can work on arts and crafts, small woodworking projects, or any other hands-on activities.

Maintenance:

Periodically check the workbench for wear and tear, and make any necessary repairs or adjustments as your child continues to use it.

Remember that the primary goal of a children's workbench is to provide a safe and educational space for your child to explore their interests and develop their skills. It's essential to tailor the workbench to your child's age and abilities, and to create a supportive environment for learning and creativity.

The Rise of the “McMansion”; an analysis of how much larger homes have gotten.

35m · Published 27 Nov 10:19

The term "McMansion" refers to a type of large, ostentatious, and often architecturally uninspired suburban home that became popular in the United States during the late 20th and early 21st centuries. These homes are typically characterized by their excessive size, gaudy design elements, and a lack of architectural coherence. The rise of McMansions can be attributed to several factors:

  1. Economic Prosperity: The late 20th and early 21st centuries saw periods of economic growth and relative affluence in the United States. As people's incomes increased, there was a greater demand for larger and more luxurious homes.

  2. Social Status and Prestige: McMansions were often seen as status symbols, reflecting the homeowner's success and affluence. Many people aspired to own these large homes as a way of showcasing their social and economic standing.

  3. Suburban Sprawl: The development of McMansions was closely tied to suburban sprawl, where large tracts of land on the outskirts of cities were developed for housing. These homes were often built on oversized lots and were part of planned communities with amenities like golf courses and clubhouses.

  4. Cookie-Cutter Design: McMansions are often criticized for their lack of architectural uniqueness. Many of these homes feature generic and formulaic designs, leading to a sense of homogeneity in suburban neighborhoods.

  5. Desire for More Space: Homebuyers were drawn to McMansions because of the promise of more space. These homes typically have multiple bedrooms, bathrooms, and large living areas, catering to the desire for ample room for families and possessions.

  6. Real Estate Trends: At the peak of their popularity, McMansions were seen as good investments due to the rising property values. Many people bought them with the expectation that they would appreciate in value over time.

  7. Customization and Amenities: McMansions often included features like granite countertops, vaulted ceilings, and walk-in closets, appealing to buyers who wanted modern conveniences and luxurious amenities.

However, the popularity of McMansions has waned over the years for various reasons:

  1. Changing Aesthetics: Many people began to find the excessive size and gaudy designs of McMansions unappealing, preferring more modest and aesthetically pleasing architectural styles.

  2. Environmental Concerns: The large size and energy inefficiency of McMansions came under scrutiny as environmental concerns grew. Smaller, more sustainable homes gained favor among eco-conscious buyers.

  3. Economic Factors: The economic downturn of the late 2000s, known as the Great Recession, had a significant impact on the real estate market, making McMansions less affordable and desirable.

  4. Lifestyle Changes: As demographics and lifestyles evolved, there was a growing trend toward smaller households and a desire for more walkable, urban environments rather than large suburban homes.

In recent years, there has been a shift towards more thoughtful and sustainable housing designs, with an emphasis on quality over quantity. As a result, the era of the McMansion has, to some extent, given way to a new emphasis on more modest and environmentally conscious home construction and design.
