Closing the Trade Skills Gap with Cooper Newby from Classet.org

44m · Published 30 Oct 04:46

The Handyman Pros Radio Show has been a supporter of decreasing the trades gap. There's a massive shortage of qualified tradespeople. From truck drivers to phlebotomists, the U.S. faces a massive skills gap in the blue-collar jobs that make our economy function.

Classet was founded to improve the massive skills gap and the challenge to find true upward mobility in the blue collar space. We believe everyone should have access to a quality, economically sustainable, and rewarding career. We want to help make that a reality.

An Interview was born.

What is the trade skills gap?

The trade skills gap, also known as the skills gap in the trades or vocational skills gap, refers to a significant disparity between the skills and qualifications that job seekers possess and the skills that employers in various trade or vocational industries require. This gap arises when there are not enough individuals with the necessary skills and training to fill job openings in trades-related professions. These professions often include skilled trades such as electricians, plumbers, carpenters, welders, HVAC technicians, and other technical or vocational roles.

Key features of the trade skills gap include:

To address the trade skills gap, various initiatives are often put in place. These can include vocational training programs, apprenticeships, education and industry partnerships, and efforts to attract and retain workers in trade-related careers. Encouraging individuals to pursue careers in the trades and providing them with the necessary training and support is essential for bridging the skills gap and ensuring a skilled workforce in these important sectors.

Handyman Functionality Using Fewer Tools and Materials

28m · Published 23 Oct 09:03

Thanks for listening to another edition of the Handyman Pros Radio Show. Our Goal: To Help you save time, money, and aggravation on your home maintenance and repair.

I was in a big box store looking to replace my well worn zip strip drain cleaning tool, I came upon a new tool that will replace my zip tool. Not a day later, John was doing the same thing and I turned him onto the same tool (we will show it in a bit). We decided to do a show on maintaining functionality as a handyman with fewer tools is possible by maximizing the utility of the tools you have, improving your skills, and being resourceful.

Here are some tips:

Master Basic Skills: Develop your skills in carpentry, plumbing, electrical work, and other essential trades. Being proficient in basic skills allows you to tackle a variety of tasks with minimal tools.

Plan and Prioritize: Before starting a project, plan it thoroughly. Identify the tools you'll need and organize your work area. This helps avoid unnecessary trips back and forth for tools.

Improvisation: Learn to improvise with the tools you have. For example, if you don't have a specific tool for a job, try to adapt a tool you do have or create a makeshift solution.

Continue Learning: Stay updated on new techniques and tools in your field. Learning innovative methods can help you accomplish tasks more efficiently with fewer tools.

Specific Tools:

Miter saw

Circular Saw

Versatile tools: allows you to improvise

Cordless Drill, drilling, driving, cleaning (brushes), grinding, polishing, etc.

Oscillating tool

4” Grinder

Replacement tools

Replacement of bigger tools: Snake

Caulk gun as a clamp

Multipurpose materials: caulk, screws, nails, PVC trim strips

Remember that skill and knowledge are just as important as the number of tools you have. With resourcefulness and creativity, you can provide quality handyman services even with a limited tool collection.

Household Equipment Lifespans

20m · Published 16 Oct 08:54

Thanks for listening to another edition of the Handyman Pros Radio Show. Our Goal: To Help you save time, money, and aggravation on your home maintenance and repair.

When it comes to your home, there's no denying that some parts age more gracefully than others. While we'd all love for our homes to remain in pristine condition indefinitely, the reality is that various components have finite lifespans. Understanding the expected lifespan of different home components can help you plan for maintenance, replacements, and renovations. In this blog post, we'll explore the anticipated life of several key home components and offer tips on how to extend their longevity.

Roofing:

o Expected lifespan: 20-30 years (asphalt shingles), 50+ years (metal or tile)

The roof is your home's first line of defense against the elements. Asphalt shingles are the most common roofing material, and they typically last around 20-30 years. However, metal or tile roofs can far outlast this estimate, often exceeding 50 years or more with proper care.

Tip: Regular roof inspections and maintenance can help identify and address issues early, prolonging your roof's life.

Windows:

o Expected lifespan: 20-30 years (vinyl), 30-50 years (wood)

The lifespan of your windows can vary depending on the material. Vinyl windows are popular for their durability and typically last around 20-30 years. Wooden windows, when well-maintained, can endure for 30-50 years or even longer.

Tip: Keep windows clean, repaint wooden frames as needed, and repair or replace seals to prevent drafts.

HVAC System:

o Expected lifespan: 15-25 years

Your heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) system play a crucial role in maintaining indoor comfort. Proper maintenance and timely repairs can extend its life, but most HVAC systems will need replacement after 15-25 years.

Tip: Regularly replace air filters, schedule annual HVAC inspections, and consider upgrading to a more energy-efficient system.

Plumbing:

o Expected lifespan: 20-50 years (depending on material)

Plumbing materials, such as copper, galvanized steel, and PVC, have varying lifespans. Copper pipes can last 50 years or more, while galvanized steel pipes may only last 20-50 years. Regular inspections can help identify leaks or corrosion.

Tip: Consider repiping with more durable materials when necessary, and address leaks promptly to prevent water damage.

Appliances:

o Expected lifespan: Varies by appliance type (e.g., 10-15 years for refrigerators, 15-20 years for ovens)

Household appliances, including refrigerators, ovens, dishwashers, and washing machines, have different lifespans. Quality, usage, and maintenance all influence how long these appliances last.

Tip: Follow manufacturers' maintenance guidelines, repair appliances when possible, and consider energy-efficient replacements.

Conclusion:

Understanding the anticipated life of home components is crucial for maintaining your property's value, safety, and functionality. While these estimates provide a general guideline, proper care and regular maintenance can significantly extend the life of your home's various parts. By staying proactive and addressing issues as they arise, you can enjoy a comfortable and functional home for many years to come.

10 Things I Wish I Knew When I Started as a Handyman

49m · Published 09 Oct 09:38

We have been seeing a lot of videos and articles about how easy it is to become and make money as a handyman. We thought we would put out a few thought provoking ideas for you to investigate if you are contemplating changing careers and becoming a handyman.

SHOW NOTES:

Starting a handyman business can be a rewarding venture, but there are several important lessons and pieces of advice that many entrepreneurs in this field wish they had known when they first started. We broke this into three categories.

Before Starting

Marketing Budget: Allocate a portion of your earnings to marketing and advertising. Consistently promoting your services can help maintain a steady flow of clients

a. Networking: Build a network of other professionals in related fields, such as plumbers, electricians, and contractors. Collaborating with them can lead to referrals and partnerships.

b. Pricing Strategies: Develop a clear pricing strategy. Consider factors like your expenses, competition, and the local market when setting your rates. Underpricing can be as detrimental as overpricing.

c. Customer Feedback: Encourage feedback from your customers and use it to improve your services. Positive reviews can be powerful marketing tools, and constructive criticism can help you grow.

d. Customer Service: Excellent customer service is key to building a successful handyman business. Communicate effectively, be punctual, and exceed customer expectations to build a solid reputation.

Your up and running

4. Documentation: Keep detailed records of your projects, expenses, and income. This will simplify tax preparation and help you track the financial health of your business.

5. Tools and Equipment: Invest in high-quality tools and equipment. While they may be expensive upfront, they will save you time and money in the long run. Consider leasing or renting specialized tools for occasional use.

6. Time Management: Efficient time management is crucial. Plan your schedule, prioritize tasks, and avoid overcommitting. Balancing work and personal life is essential for long-term sustainability.

7. Continuing Education: Stay up-to-date with industry trends and techniques. Consider attending workshops, courses, or trade shows to enhance your skills and knowledge.

Business Expansion and Growth

8. Business Growth:

Be prepared for business growth. As your reputation spreads, you may need to hire additional staff, expand your services.

9. Fiscal responsibility: Savings and Emergency Fund: Set aside money for emergencies and savings. The handyman business can have its ups and downs, so having financial reserves can provide peace of mind.

10. Changing legal entity: Contact your business professionals (accountant, lawyer) and see if there is advantage to changing business entities (from sole proprietor to LLC or Corporation)

Starting a handyman business requires careful planning and ongoing effort. Learning from the experiences and insights of others who have walked the same path can help you navigate the challenges and build a successful enterprise.
