This episode we talk to Brisbane musician Padraig Parkhurst. Padraig is a composer, producer and guitarist who releases instrumental hip-hop under the alias Anarchosophist. As well as producing instrumental hip-hop, Padraig has a background in classical composition, piano and guitar with his pieces being performed on stage in San Francisco, San Diego, Fresno and London. 

Padraig tells us about his musical education and how growing up in remote Australian communities has influenced his listening and later compositions. We touch on why he began composing and what led to the creation of the Anarchosophist project. We discuss a wide range of topics, everything from production techniques to Padraig's thoughts on the genre he inhabits.

Chloe Hobbs - Graphic Notation and the Toy Piano

This episode we talk to Canberra composer Chloe Hobbs. Chloe is a composer and performer of open and improvised music who is currently completing her PhD at the ANU school of music. Chloe’s work has been performed by ensembles such as the ANU chamber orchestra and The Noise to name a few.

Chloe talks to us about her approach to composition and composing with both standard and new forms of notation, including the use of graphics. She tells us about her thoughts on composing using open parameters and how she writes for specific instruments or open ensembles. We also talk about her focus on toy ensembles and the toy piano.

Warren Abela - Intaloopa and Synth-Wave

Dave Parker - Endeavours

This episode we talk to musician Dave Parker. Dave is a guitarist, composer and producer who currently plays in the band Bloom Parade as well as his solo project Endeavours. Under the Endeavours name Dave has released a record titled Loomer.

Kirrah Amosa - Pop Music and Island RnB

This episode CC chats with multi-talented performer Kirrah Amosa. Kirrah sings, acts, and dances. She has starred in multiple musicals including The Bodyguard and Wicked. Kirrah has performed alongside the likes of Adam Lambert, Rita Ora, The Aston Shuffle and Touch Sensitive as well as being a seasoned performer in her own right. 

Kirrah talks about her musical upbringing and what led her to a career in singing. We talk about her experience in the US working with new songwriters and diving into the world of the LA music scene. Kirrah also gives her thoughts on the sounds that are shaping pop music and where she fits within that world. Kirrah’s latest offering is an EP titled Island Way which she describes as a process of learning and discovering her Polynesian cultural heritage.

Alexander Hunter - Open Form Composition

In this episode CC speak to Dr Alexander Hunter. Alec is a composer and academic who is currently lecturing composition at the ANU school of Music. Alec is a bass player but also plays a wide variety of instruments including the viola da gamba. 

Alec discusses his academic career and how he has developed his style of composition. He discusses his specific approach to open scoring and allowing the performer space to insert their own voice within a piece. We talk about the importance of free improvisation and how it relates to his practice and conceptual ideas that are expressed through his music. We also touch on his experience with Scottish folk music, lietmusic, scottish pipe music and classical music.
