Dr. Markey describes her journey into researching body image and eating-related behaviors, as well as defines for listeners what body image is. We discuss the primary social influences on body image, including social media, and how these influences can with harm or promote positive body image. Dr. Markey discusses healthcare providers' understanding of weight and body image and ways in which healthcare providers may be unintentionally contributing to disordered eating behaviors and poor body image. Further, we discussed her books The Body Image Book for Girls: Love Yourself and Grow Up Fearlessand Being You: The Body Image Book for Boys and her upcoming book Adultish: The Body Image Book for Life. At the end of the episode, Dr. Markey also provides any listener struggling with body image words of encouragement and advice.

Dan first describes what a hidden disability is and how students with hidden disabilities face more challenges than students without them. Dan and I discuss the transition to college for students with hidden disabilities, including the key players in helping students successfully make the transition. Dan discusses the roles that parents/guardians and therapists play in supporting students with hidden disabilities, as well as how students themselves can engage in self-advocacy. We end the conversation by discussing some accommodations and supports that may aid in students with hidden disabilities being successful in college.

53m · PublishedIn today's episode of Psych Talk I chat with CJ Infantino, an ex-Silicon Valley Engineer turned entrepreneur who shares about his grief so others feel they can to. CJ shares his story with grief after the death of his wife to cancer. He discusses his experience with mental health and therapy before the loss of his wife, as well as what has helped him, personally and professionally, with his grief, with a specific focus on EMDR and somatic therapy. We discuss how the high pressure of working in Silicone Valley impacted his mental health and the process of leaving his 20 year career in Silicone Valley to start three companies focused around grief. CJ shares about Unvoiced, his company dedicated to ensure that no one grieving ever feels alone, Hopeless Mope, his clothing company, and The Day After, his podcast and resources for grief. CJ ends the episode by discussing how publicly writing about his struggles with mental health and grieving impacted him, his family, and the greater community.

1h 0m · PublishedIn today's episode of Psych Talk I discuss maternal mental health, from infertility struggles through the postpartum period. I start the episode by defining what "maternal mental health" is and sharing some current statistics. I cover the impact of infertility on mental health, anxiety and depression during pregnancy, taking medication during pregnancy, birth trauma, and hormonal shifts after pregnancy. I discuss a variety of postpartum mental health concerns such as anxiety, depression, OCD, bipolar disorder, PTSD, and psychosis, as well as non-clinical concerns that mothers tend to face including mom rage, mom guilt, and the invisible load of motherhood. I discuss how the lack of paid and prolonged parental leave in the United States impacts mental health, racial disparities in maternal mental health, as well as ways mothers can get help with their mental health, both professionally and otherwise.

Laura and I start the conversation by discussing how these diagnoses can impact one's mental health and body image. Laura discusses how these diagnoses often are associated with fear of pain, in turn, limiting one's mobility and functioning and discusses how these diagnoses impact various phases of life (pregnancy, postpartum, etc.). We discuss how these diagnoses also impact men, how they may show up differently for men, and the stigma surrounding, particularly a pelvic floor dysfunction diagnosis, for men. Further, Laura discusses how she works on resilience with her clients and offers words of encouragement for anyone who may be struggling with scoliosis or pelvic floor dysfunction.

Atypical anorexia is not considered a subtype of anorexia nervosa but, rather, falls under the category of “Other Specified Feeding or Eating Disorder” in the DSM-5-TR. I discuss the similarities and differences between anorexia nervosa and "atypical" anorexia, as well as the concerns over the diagnosis from many people in the field. I discuss the risk factors for developing "atypical" anorexia, consequences of the diagnosis, as well as treatment options for individuals with this diagnosis.
