On this episode of the Good Word with Goodwill, Yahoo Sports senior NBA reporters Vincent Goodwill and Jake Fischer talk about all four of the Conference Semifinals, which could all be locked at 2-2 after tonight.

The guys start in Minnesota, because that’s where Vince is, and talk about the Denver Nuggets looking like the unbeatable champs once again in their last two games against the Timberwolves.

They then move on to the Indiana Pacers, who have taken advantage of the New York Knicks team that seems to be running out of luck and healthy bodies. Can the Madison Square Garden crowd will their team to a game 5 win and keep hope alive?

Moving to the Western Conference, Vinnie takes a moment to gloat about being one of the very few people to have picked the Dallas Mavericks to beat the Oklahoma City Thunder in this series. Jake was there, and he said that it looks like the young OKC team is starting to wilt under the pressure of the NBA Playoffs.

The Boston Celtics slipped up in game 2, yet again, but roared back in game 3 to show that they still don’t have a decent challenger in the Eastern Conference. How can we trust them to handle high pressure games when they haven’t played in one all year?

Finally, Yahoo Sports NBA Draft Analyst Krysten Peek joins the show, the day after the draft lottery, to discuss her updated mock draft and talk about what is going on with Bronny James at the NBA Scouting Combine this week.

On this episode of the Good Word with Goodwill, Yahoo Sports senior NBA reporter Vincent Goodwill is joined by NBA analyst Tom Haberstroh to talk about everything that’s going on in the NBA Playoffs Conference Semifinals.

The guys start in Oklahoma City, where the Thunder defense looked too big, too strong and too energetic for Luka Doncic and the Dallas Mavericks to handle. Are the Thunder just the better team or is Luka’s high usage rate going to sink the Mavericks?

As expected, the Boston Celtics cruised to an easy victory against the Cleveland Cavaliers, even without Kristaps Porzingis. Vinnie and Tom talk about Jayson Tatum, who has been Boston’s 3rd best player amidst a poor playoff run by him and it hasn’t mattered at all. Tom wonders if he’s just keeping himself fresh for the later rounds.

The end of game 1 between the New York Knicks and the Indiana Pacers was a mess due to inconsistent officiating. Tom and Vince talk about what calls they wish were, or weren’t, called and why the players are right to complain about the refs in this postseason.

Jalen Brunson, similar to Luka Doncic, has been carrying a high usage rate for the Knicks and the guys are wondering how long he’ll be able to keep it up. Tom digs through the stats to show that, historically, offenses built around one player with a high usage rate doesn’t typically equal playoff success.

Back to the officiating, Tom wants to talk about what happened in game 2 between the Nuggets and Timberwolves because he has a theory as to why Jamal Murray felt empowered to throw a towel and a heat pack at a referee. Meanwhile, Vinnie has a theory as to why Michael Malone wasn’t given a technical foul when he was screaming in the same ref’s face.

Finally, Producer John asks the guys to give their Top 5 best playoff breakout performances. The type of games that announce to the world that a new star is taking over the league and the old star’s time is done, similar to what Anthony Edwards did to Kevin Durant in round 1 this year. And, as per usual, the guys go digging in the crates and find examples from the 80s and 90s.

Dan and Adam then have a long conversation about a number of things that have gone wrong in Denver this year and seem to be causing issues for the Nuggets since the start of the NBA Playoffs. Can the Nuggets win if Jamal Murray doesn’t get better? Will Jamal Murray be suspended? Are we sure the GM and head coach are on the same page? What if this roster has just expired and nobody realized it yet?

Before moving on to The Closing Five and weekly recommendations, the guys take a few minutes to talk about Anthony Edwards, who appears to be one of the best leaders in the entire NBA despite being just 22-years old. The NBA Playoffs have officially moved past the first round and into the Conference Semifinals, with the last game taking place on Sunday between the Cleveland Cavaliers and Orlando Magic.

The Cavaliers won the game, and probably saved a few people from getting fired, on the strength of another outstanding playoff performance by Donovan Mitchell.

The Magic, meanwhile, played like a young team when the game mattered most. But that’s because they are a young team! And they have lots of opportunities to improve their roster in the upcoming offseason. Vince and Fred talk about what they liked, and didn’t like, from the Magic and what they are looking for on the trade and free agent markets for Orlando.

Fred is about as locked in as you can be to the New York Knicks, so he’s the perfect guy to help us preview their Conference Semifinal series against the Indiana Pacers. The guys hit this series from all angles and wonder how the Pacers will try to play defense against Jalen Brunson.

Finally, the Los Angeles Lakers fired head coach Darvin Ham on Friday. There are rumors swirling that LeBron James’ podcast co-host JJ Redick could be a candidate to replace him. Vince and Fred talk through the people they think are candidates and wonder who would be the best fit for this high-pressure job.

The guys start in Los Angeles, where the Clippers are facing the potential of a pretty grim offseason after falling down 3-2 to the Dallas Mavericks. James Harden looked like the version that gets him criticism in the playoffs while the Dallas defense looked up to the task of shutting down the Clippers offense.

The Miami Heat were once again blown out by Boston, this time leading to a 4-1 series win for the Celtics. Jake and Dan look at what went wrong for the Heat and what might be coming this offseason for Pat Riley’s team. Is it time to move Jimmy Butler in a trade?

Speaking of poor results amidst high expectations, the Phoenix Suns look ready to double-down this offseason after getting swept in the 1st round of the NBA Playoffs. The guys explain why changing the coach both makes sense and doesn’t, and wonder what type of changes the team could actually make to the roster before the start of next season.

The only Conference Semifinal series that is locked up is between the defending champion Denver Nuggets and the Minnesota Timberwolves, who have seemingly been built specifically to beat the Nuggets. Jake and Dan both have high hopes for how Minnesota can perform in this series, but neither of them pick the Timberwolves to actually win the series because the Nuggets still feel inevitable.

After making a joke about the Philadelphia 76ers home court advantage, or lack thereof, Jake explains why Tyrese Maxey’s game 5 performance didn’t just save Philly’s season…it might’ve changed the future plans of the front office.

Vinnie has a theory about Doc Rivers and it’s why he thought the Milwaukee Bucks would win game 5 against the Indiana Pacers, which they did handily. But what does it mean for the eventual return of Giannis Antetokounmpo and Damian Lillard? And will the Pacers regret not taking game 5 more seriously?

Finally, Vince and Producer John preview tonight’s pivotal game 5 matchup between the Los Angeles Clippers and the Dallas Mavericks, with the series currently tied at 2-2. Luka’s shooting has been concerning, but Kyrie has been electric, and we’ll hit to see if James Harden and Paul George can play again like they did in game 4.

Dan and Trey talk about Game 5, where Anthony Davis and LeBron James left it all out on the court for the Lakers and it still didn’t matter. Trey explains why the Denver Nuggets are so good in playoff situations despite lacking the same kind of star power as the Lakers.

Right after the buzzer, rumors started flying about if the Lakers would fire head coach Darvin Ham and if LeBron James would be back with the team next season. The guys discuss that, as well as what the Lakers might be looking to do to reshape their roster next year.

The Boston Celtics once again blew out the Miami Heat, but the big stories coming out of the game are the injury to Kristaps Porzingis and the flagrant foul that was called well after the ref’s whistle was blown. As long as Porzingis can be back in time for the Eastern Conference Finals, the Celtics should be able to weather this storm.

The Oklahoma City Thunder also closed out their series, a sweep or the New Orleans Pelicans, and now get to rest until the winner of Clippers/Mavericks advances to the 2nd round. In addition to talking about rest vs. rust, the guys talk about how deep (and how young) this very good Oklahoma City team is.

The Pelicans desperately needed Zion Williamson in this series and never got him. What they did get was a peek at what life is like with Brandon Ingram as their best player and it could lead to him being off the team by the start of next season.

After briefly discussing the 76ers/Knicks game that will be happening tonight, the guys close the show with The Closing Five and some weekly recommendations.

First, the guys get a little side-tracked talking about Stevie Wonder, and then start comparing Stevie’s early albums to Steph Curry’s MVP Awards.

Then, the guys get to the very impressive sweep of the Phoenix Suns by the Minnesota Timberwolves. Minnesota looks great, although J.A. is a little concerned about how their timelines will match up in the future. Vinnie is excited that a young star (Anthony Edwards) is snatching the crown away from an older star (Kevin Durant), but also wonders if the Golden State Warriors should try to work a trade to acquire Durant.

The New York Knicks fans took over the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia, Joel Embiid is earning a reputation as a dirty player, and just about everything that can go wrong is going wrong for the 76ers. The Knicks, on the other hand, are nailing the little things and seem as composed as any team in the playoffs.

The Los Angeles Lakers are in Denver tonight to take on the Nuggets. Both guys agree the Nuggets are going to win the series, but they haven’t looked dominant and J.A. wonders if the injury to Jamal Murray might be just enough for the Lakers to extend the series further.

Without Kawhi Leonard, the Los Angeles Clippers once again looked like a fantastic team, built around the offense of James Harden and Paul George. Both guys are headed towards free agency this offseason, and their win on Sunday raises a lot of interesting questions about how valuable the team finds both players to be.

The guys start off the show with the shocking Miami Heat win over the Boston Celtics last night, a game that Dan says is eerily reminiscent of one of Miami’s games against the New York Knicks in last year’s NBA Playoffs.

After the Oklahoma City Thunder dominated the New Orleans Pelicans, Jake says rumors are already starting to fly around the NBA in regard to Brandon Ingram’s future and whether he’s likely to be traded this offseason. He hasn’t played well without Zion Williamson and the two of them haven’t played particularly well together, either.

The Denver Nuggets visit the Los Angeles Lakers tonight, in a series that feels hopeless for LeBron James and Anthony Davis. Jake and Dan dig through the stats, showing off just how good those two guys have been and also how great the Nuggets have been when they’ve matched up against the Lakers.

Jake expected a better playoff performance from the Orlando Magic, who are starting to resemble last year’s Cleveland Cavaliers team (the one that said the playoff lights were too bright for them) while playing against this year’s Cleveland Cavaliers team.

The New York Knicks are traveling to Philadelphia to play the 76ers tonight, which will be something of a homecoming for a bunch of Villanova alumni that the Knicks have built their team around. Jake dug in on what made those Villanova teams great and how all of the players ended up being so close with one another.

Finally, Jake brought some video from his recent league championship game, so Dan watches it and tries to come up with NBA player comps for Jake’s basketball style.
