Profits Over Patient Care: The Corruption of Evidence-Based Medicine

21m · Happy & Healthy with Amy · 13 Mar 09:00

In this episode, I'm taking a hard long look at the way chronic diseases are treated in our healthcare system.

My research started with the following documentaries on Netflix:

  • You Are What You Eat
  • What The Health
  • The Game Changers
  • Poisoned

These lead me to the following books:

  • How Not To Die by Michael Gregor, MD
  • The Obesity Code and The Diabetes Code by Jason Fung, MD
  • Dr. Neal Barnard's Program for Reversing Diabetes

And, lastly, Fighting Pharma: A Conversation between Joe Polish and Calley Means. This last source is a must-watch. Calley Means reveals the alarming efforts of for-profit companies like Novo Nordisk, the maker of Ozempic and Wegovy, in healthcare policies.

My research brought a troubling reality into focus – the evidence-based medicine practiced by most physicians in our healthcare system, is rife with conflicts of interest and corporate influence.

Just follow the money: From foundational nutrition research used to set nutrition guidance (eg., the food pyramid) to trusted nonprofits (eg., American Diabetes Association) to the standard of care protocols used by physicians, the pharmaceutical companies and big food corporations are everywhere.

[Back To Basics} The Problem with Calories In, Calories Out

In this episode, I explain what's included in the "calories in, calories out" equation and why focusing on calorie restriction and the number on your scale is a serious oversimplification of what's required to lose weight and keep it off.

More often than not, instead of shedding excess fat, your weight loss efforts may be slowing down your metabolism, and making it harder to keep weight off in the long run.

This episode highlights what wrong with dieting and sets the stage for a binge-worthy series that covers what you need to make lasting weight loss easy and inevitable.

Why You Take Things Personally (And How to Stop)

In this episode, we're talking about how sensitive and easily offended we've become, why we take things personally, and how to stop.

The infamous slap of Chris Rock by Will Smith at the 2022 Oscars, in reaction to a joke he found offensive, highlights the importance of learning how to stop.

I unpack the concept of healthy boundaries, understand the balance between enmeshment and detachment, and discuss the importance of aligning with our core values to build self-worth and resilience.

I also share practical tips on how to handle triggering situations, the benefits of journaling, and why coming from a place of self-love is crucial when taking action for personal growth and self-improvement.
