PipemanRadio Interviews Louden Swain About Feelings and Such

13m · Published 04 Nov 18:36
On this episode of the Adventures of Pipeman, Pipeman speaks to Louden Swain, who have released some awesome new music they have and are here to share with us.
The guys start by talk about how they sound, and they describe themselves as lots of energy, a sense of humour and a well weathered rock, which Pipeman believes is the perfect explanation for their music. They go on to talk about the pandemic and how it helped them create some of the best music they’ve made, using the energy they had pent up after being locked down.
The guys talk about writing their song, and how they share the responsibilities but also have their own personal touch. It’s always been a collaborative effort for them team and always shoot back and forth when making the decisions.
Rob talks about how cathartic and therapeutic it was to write the new album and how it helped him a lot given the tough couple of years he’s had. He talks about how he sometimes uses his music as a journal entry. He also touches on how awesome it is when people say that their songs have helped them through moments of their own.
You can find all the information you could possibly need over at their website through loudenswain.com for all the merch and information. You can also check the guys out on Twitter, Instagram, YouTube and Facebook to get all of their content.
When Louden Swain began working on the band's tenth studio album, Feelings and Such, the world looked much different than it had two years earlier.
The band's frontman, Rob Benedict, had gone through a divorce. Bassist Michael Borja had recently lost his father. Everyone's lives had been altered by the pandemic that brought everyday life to a standstill for months on end. It was a time of uncertainty and change. What remained the same, though, were the creative bonds shared by Louden Swain's four members.
"We're like brothers," says Benedict, who co-founded the long-running group in 1997. "It's been that way since the very beginning. We're all very committed — to each other, to the music, to the band — and that's what holds Louden Swain together."
With its combination of rock & roll swagger and melodic jangle, Feelings and Such isn't just the finest record of Louden Swain's 25-year career. It's also a testament to the shared history and musical chemistry that continue to fuel the band's output. Co-produced by Louden Swain and longtime collaborator Zackary Darling, Feelings and Such is stocked with emotive, electrifying songs about pushing past challenges and turning one's struggles into salvation. It's an album rooted in trials and triumphs, whipped into shape by a band of rock & roll lifers who've had plenty of experience with both.
Formed in Los Angeles and named after a character in 1980s film Vision Quest, Louden Swain made its official debut with 2001's Able-Legged Heroes. Albums like 2009's A Brand New Hurt, 2014's Sky Alive, and 2017's No Time Like the Present followed. With drummer Stephen Norton and guitarist Billy Moran rounding out the group's lineup, all four members shared songwriting duties, turning Louden Swain into a true collaboration. The guys embraced their independence, too, making music on their own terms while steadily becoming an internationally-beloved band.
Along the way, Benedict earned acclaim not only as a singer, but also as a film and television actor. Both jobs showcased his work as a genuine storyteller, and Louden Swain's audience expanded as he made regular appearances on shows like Felicity and Supernatural. Louden Swain even became the house band at Supernatural conventions across the country. "I used to think that acting and singing in a band were two different things," Benedict admits, "but now I know they're not. They're part of the same melting pot. We'll play to 2,000 people at a Supernatural convention, and everyone will sing the lyrics back to us. Then we'll play a club show somewhere else, and those fans will travel from other countries to see us. Our fans are amazing, and we don't take any of this for granted."
Gratitude and togetherness are major themes of Feelings and Such. Louden Swain's previous album, Foolish, had been recorded during the height of the pandemic, whose restrictions required the bandmates to individually record their instruments in isolation. "We wrote the songs while apart and recorded our parts separately," explains Benedict, who also released a solo album during that quarantined period. "Once we could actually play together again, there was so much joy and energy between us. You can hear that on the album. It feels very much alive."
Feelings and Such was largely recorded during an inspired weekend that found the bandmates occupying the same space once again, locking eyes with one another and exploring their new songs together in real time. The electricity was palpable. "There's The Rub" and the anthemic "Crystal Ball" were rehearsed in a single day and recorded the following afternoon. The groove-driven "Every Little Thing" evolved out of a casual jam. "Guilty One" — a roadhouse rock & roll anthem with a monster guitar riff — shone a light on the band's humor, with lyrics partially inspired by the band's detainment in an immigration jail cell during a European tour. Perhaps most importantly, songs like "Bring It In" found Louden Swain distilling the challenges of the modern era into messages of hope and resilience.
"'Bring It In' is about me coming to terms with my divorce and finding something positive about the situation," says Benedict, who doubles as the band's lyricist. "It takes a look at everything I experienced — isolation, guilt, feeling alone — and ultimately embraces those feelings. It's a song about being in the moment. We always try to find something hopeful in our music, especially the songs that are very vulnerable and open. We're always looking to make lemonade out of lemons."
Now a quarter-century into a thriving career, Louden Swain's members continue to look on the bright side during moments of darkness and doubt. Feelings and Such is a tribute to that tenacious spirit. Created in the wake of a global upheaval and personal struggle, it's a collection of optimistic rock & roll songs that reflect upon the past, take stock of the present, and focus on the future. And for Louden Swain, the future looks bright.
"It's a bit of a rebirth," Benedict adds. "In our lives, so many things ended at the same time. Supernatural ended. My marriage ended. We've been dealing with the loss of parents and partners, and that can be a scary transition, but there's excitement to be found in the new unknown. Life carries on and you find your next chapter. You never know what that next chapter might bring, and that's the scary part… but it's also the exciting part."

PipemanRadio Interviews Voodoo Moonshine

13m · Published 04 Nov 18:22
On this episode of the Adventures of Pipeman, Pipeman speaks to Voodoo Moonshine, who has some amazing Rock and Roll music to share with us today.
Voodoo starts by talking about the new music he has brought out, in particular their latest single Give It To Me, which peaked at number 28 on the billboard charts, after their previous single only made it to 201. They also won Album of the Year at the Josie awards in Nashville and couple other awards, so it’s been a great comeback since lockdown.
Voodoo explains how he had a version of the album finished in 2011 and never actually did anything with until the last couple years when he decided to revisit it. He never expected it to do so well. He talks about how lockdown was a beneficial time for him and the band in terms of creating music.
You can get connected to Voodoo Moonshine via their website voodoomoonshinerocks.com, which will give you all the information you need for the shows and tour dates, and of course the merchandise too. They also have physical copies of the music available through Dark Star Records and online in a bunch of retailers. They’re also on all the typical social media platforms so be sure to check them out too.
VOODOO MOONSHINE RETURN WITH NEW SINGLE/VIDEO, “GIVE IT TO ME”
Florida/Georgia - based rockers Voodoo Moonshine – a “bluesy groove rock band” – are back with a new single and video from their latest album, ‘Bottom of the Barrel.’ The song, “Give It to Me,” came about when Jeff Losawyer (the founding member, songwriter and lead guitarist of Voodoo Moonshine) was traveling from Oklahoma to Memphis, TN to write and record for the album that became ‘Bottom of the Barrel.’ Losawyer was sitting in his hotel room with his dog Daisy eating Taco Bell, and the thought of one-night stands came to mind and became the song’s lyrical inspiration.
“We were in search of a location to shoot the video,” recalls Losawyer about the song’s video clip. “We were having a hard time finding the perfect spot. We were looking for an old, abandoned building or warehouse. We were about a week out when The Barn in Sanford was referred to us. Our first thought was ‘A country bar to shoot a rock video?!’ We checked out the photo's online, and we thought it would be a pretty neat place to do a shoot. When we got to Florida, the day before the shoot we went to check out the location and that's when everything started to fall into place. Who would have thought you could actually line dance to our rock song, ‘Give It to Me’?”
The video for the song (which the guitarist describes as “a more radio friendly danceable song, and pop rock compared to the others”) can be viewed here: https://youtu.be/ewR_jqBSKEM
Voodoo Moonshine was formed in Memphis, TN in 2003 by Losawyer. The debut album, ‘Decade of Decay,’ was released in March 2005, and was well received throughout Europe. A tour was booked, including shows in England, Ireland, and Scotland. Due to the album’s success they were voted “Number One Band” seven times in England, and six times in Japan. In mid-2005, Voodoo Moonshine was introduced in Dublin, Ireland and quickly became one of the top three requested bands there.
Their debut received rave reviews in many music publications including R.I.P. Magazine. 2006 saw the band’s popularity continue to rise, and rock radio around the world stood up and took notice. Voodoo Moonshine could be heard in Portugal, Greece, Canada and of course, at home in America. Many times during the year, the band’s songs charted ahead of some of rock's so-called heavy hitters, like Bon Jovi, Skid Row, Guns N Roses and the Scorpions. The album ‘Decade of Decay’ continued to do extremely well deep into 2007, more than two full years after its release. As the year wound down, the band took some much needed, and well deserved, time off. This eventually led to Losawyer working on a solo album. Jeff continued to write music during this time, and never gave up his passion to play.
Fast forward, and suddenly 12 years had passed. Interestingly enough, he heard Pedro Espada singing in a YouTube video and really liked what he heard. He took a chance and reached out to Pedro to see if he would be interested in singing some of his songs. Initially he didn’t receive a very warm response. As a matter of fact, he was mostly ignored, but he knew he had found the right man for the job, so he was persistent. His persistence paid off and Jeff was invited to Daytona Beach Bike Week 2018 to jam with Pedro and his bandmates of Rockit Fly. Needless to say, things went well with Pedro, former Nova Rex member Eddie Cruise and Hector Acevedo, merging together to bring back Voodoo Moonshine.
And it turns out Voodoo Moonshine already have plans to support their new single/video. “Future plans...shows, shows and shows. Fans can expect a set of big energy versatile songs that everyone should like. Working on songs for the next album already and continued growth of the band and fan base.”

Jeff Losawyer - guitar
Hector Acevedo - bass
Eddie Cruise - drums

Chris speaks about he always finds it helpful looking at the crowd enjoying the music and not being judgement to get into his own zone on stage, which really helps him to just play from the heart and deliver the emotion the music has in it. PipemanRadio Interviews Helmet at Aftershock 2022

15m · Published 18 Oct 21:51
On this episode of the Adventures of Pipeman, Pipeman speaks to Page Hamilton from Helmet live at Aftershock, in Sacramento, California.
Page starts by talking about how impressed he is with how far Aftershock has come since the first time they played it, when it was a gravel dusty parking lot with a porta potty a mile away from the stage. He says they seem to have taken some tips from European festivals.
The guys touch on the pandemic, talking about the psychological effect the pandemic has had on them as they’ve been touring for so long, and then to suddenly stop was a shock to the system. Paige says he took touring for granted.
The guys move on to speak about the struggles of being at festivals that people may not realize bands have to go through, whether it be sound issues or an array of potential problems which are out of their control, which just makes it all the more satisfying when you come to an event like Aftershock and it’s run so well.
During the pandemic, the guys did their first live album, which is something they’ve wanted to do for a while and required a lot of work transferring tapes and getting everything set up, but the pandemic allowed them to have the time to do that.
Pipeman finishes off by asking Page about a story he’s going to tell when he’s 80, where he talks about meeting JP the drummer from Clutch along with a couple other anecdotes from their years of being together.

PipemanRadio Interviews The Bobby Lees at Aftershock 2022

14m · Published 17 Oct 20:48
On this episode of the Adventures of Pipeman, Pipeman speaks Mackie, Kendall and Nick from the Bobby Lees live at Aftershock, in Sacramento, California.
Pipeman comments on how he didn’t expect the sound he heard from them when he first seen the name of the band, but in the best possible way. The guys joke Bobby Lee might sue them for taking his name. They actually went on his podcast and he was really nice so they’re safe.
Speaking on social media, the guys say they stay far away from TikTok and would ideally be off social media but they have to these days to promote themselves. Pipeman says he wishes he could just throw all his tech away sometimes cause he remembers before it and it was better.
The guys make sure to mention some of the positives of social media, like people discovering their music through their pages and promoted posts which is awesome cause they never have seen them otherwise.
Pipeman asks them to describe their music to anyone who hasn’t heard of them before. They use two simple words to describe it; really good. Pipeman agrees and adds that it is super high energy. Their live shows follow a similar pattern with lots of energy and just living and loving what they’re doing.
You can check out the new album called Bellevue which is out now on Ipecac recordings, or via their website. You’ll also be able to find the merch you can purchase at thebobbylees.com and for all tour dates and other info, check out their Instagram account.
