Allison Russell: The Returner

32m · Published 25 Jun 16:31
I'm lucky to have a special relationship with Allison Russell; although her career is skyrocketing right now, she remembers where she comes from and as an early supporter of her solo work, she's been so kind to always make time for me. I originally did this interview for The Sunday Show (my new show on Indie88 from 10am-1pm highlighting singer-songwriters, roots, blues, soul, and Americana musicians. We covered so much ground, touching on everything from her new single, her amazing experience at the Gorge a few weekends back with Joni Mitchell and friends, pride and black music month, that I felt compelled to share this interview here as well. The four-time GRAMMY-nominated singer, songwriter, poet, activist, and multi-instrumentalist has announced her new album, The Returner. The record will be released on September 8th, 2023 via Fantasy Records. She’s already shared the title-track from the album. The Returner was written and co-produced by Allison along with dim star (her partner JT Nero and Drew Lindsay) and was recorded over Solstice week in December 2022 at Henson Recording Studios in Los Angeles, CA. It features Russell’s “Rainbow Coalition” band of all-female musicians along with special guest appearances from the legendary Wendy & Lisa, Brandi Carlile, Brandy Clark, and Hozier.  WATCH / SHARE “THE RETURNER” HERE BUY / STREAM “THE RETURNER” HERE Since the release of Outside Child, her debut solo LP two years ago, Russell’s often devastating, deeply moving, cathartic celebration of survivor’s joy has become one of the most acclaimed albums of the past 10 years. Now comes the second chapter in herstory, The Returner, a body-shaking, mind-expanding, soulful expression of liberation, love, and self-respect that serves as a fierce declaration of joy for all survivors that have made it to the other side. Allison, JT, and Drew built The Returner from the bottom up with a rhythm-first, genre-fluid approach. The improvisational energy of great female artists sparked the album’s fierce joy, and provided a wider canvas for Allison’s immense, unlimited talent. In all, the new album doesn’t just deliver on the promise of the last two years, it exceeds all reasonable (and unreasonable) expectations and affirms Allison Russell’s place among music’s most vital artists⎯and The Returner, as one of 2023’s most essential recordings. Dr. Pamela Palmater: Indigenous AF

53m · Published 12 Jun 05:00
I first met Dr. Pamela Palmater (online) via our work together on SiriusXM’s Turtle Island Talk Series created for The Indigiverse, CH. 165. As a team, we were looking to integrate some new and active voices into the rebranding of what was previously Canadian Indigenous Peoples’ Radio (eye roll). Pam came on as a host of the series and she came with so much knowledge! I felt like I learned more from her in a few short hours working together than I had in years. Pamela Palmater is a Mi'kmaw lawyer, professor, author, podcaster, filmmaker, and producer from Eel River Bar First Nation, who has been creating and producing Indigenous content as part of her public education and advocacy on Indigenous issues since 2012. She is the President and CEO of her own Indigenous production company, Warrior Life Studios Inc. Warrior Life Podcast - featured at digital media, podcast, film, and art festivals - Pam uses her podcast to help lift the voices of Indigenous land defenders, water protectors, advocates, and leaders from all over Turtle Island. Pam is also the producer and host of the award-winning Warrior Kids Podcast which combines her passion for Indigenous cultures, with her desire to educate and inspire young children to take action on social justice and climate change issues. Criminals on Patrol is her latest podcast which turns the crime genre on its head by shining a light on the dark side of the thin blue line by investing the criminality, corruption, and cover-ups in policing. Pam is also working on ParaNative, another podcast that she will produce and host, which takes listeners on a journey into the “ParaNative” revealing the truth behind the Native creatures and otherworldly beings that live among us and challenge age-old stereotypes about Native peoples and the paranormal. In addition to her podcast work, Pam produces, curates, and hosts digital media art in the form of audio and/or video content for special radio shows, artistic events, exhibitions, and stand-alone work for festivals. Her award-winning docu-podcast Samqwan: Water has been produced into a short documentary and selected for the 2023 Native Women in Film, Toronto Short Doc, and Weengushk International Film festivals. You can also see Pam in front of the cameras at public speaking events, art festivals, numerous documentaries, and her own social media content. Her current projects include a television series honouring Indigenous stories where she is host and producer. Pam is also known for her significant work in public education through her mainstream media participation as a political and legal analyst on Indigenous issues, human rights, social justice, and climate change. You can find her on numerous media outlets including SiriusXM, Newstalk 1010 (Toronto), and more. In this episode, Pam talks about launching her new podcast called Criminals On Patrol: https://www.criminalsonpatrol.com  Find out more about Dr. Pamela Palmater: https://pampalmater.com/ https://www.tiktok.com/@pampalmater https://www.instagram.com/pam_palmater/ https://www.linkedin.com/in/pam-palmater-18049515/ https://twitter.com/Pam_Palmaterw short hours working together than I had in years. Jody Vance

50m · Published 15 May 20:09
Jody Vance recently made national headlines sharing her experience with online criminal harassment. While that story is important and she'll share it here, she's a media personality with the quite the journey to listen and learn from. A born and raised Vancouverite, Jody Vance built her career in radio and TV in BC before her big break. With the launch of Sportsnet, Vance was lured east. In 2000 a move to Toronto would lead to an incredible opportunity to make sports broadcast history, nationally. After a very brief stint as host of Sportcentral AM executives decided to offer up the national supper hour program seat. Almost a decade later, in 2009, the ocean called her back home with a return to her radio roots in the cards to fit her greatest casting: mother to her “miracle baby”. (There’s a story there). Once settled back home and soaking up the 2010 Olympics, things got very busy. In 2011, while picking up a few fill-in sports shifts at CBC Vancouver - between hosting mid-days on SHORE104, another dream opportunity presented itself. Host of the Canucks Stanley Cup postgame show “Seeking Stanley.” Shortly after that her career path took a turn out of sports and into full-time news and Current Affairs. In October 2011, Vance joined CITY-TV as host of Breakfast Television Vancouver. For five years viewers watched the evolution to where Vance finds herself now: a broadcaster who helps shape conversations that impact her community - and offer opinions.  Five years of BT came to a halt with budget cuts in spring of 2016 - and that was the push to become her own brand. Broadcast Pirate Services Ltd was born. Almost immediately CKNW brought Vance on as go-to fill in host. She penned a weekly column for theorca.ca called The Middle for five years. In 2021 Vance signed on as Canadian Correspondent for Al Jazeera English bringing stories from Canada to a worldwide audience of almost half a billion viewers.  Most recently Jody teamed up with her longtime radio colleague Lynda Steele on a weekly TV talk show called “Steele and Vance” — on CHEK. North America’s only employee owned media outlet. The one hour show followed ‘Jeopardy’ and has, in only its first season, welcomed a “who’s who” of guests.  A proud, and fiercely protective, mother - Jody also admits to being somewhat of a “crazy dog lady” in the best possible way.  Find out more about Jody’s criminal harassment story HERE.
