This week's guest is the Weekend Anchor for Global National, Farah Nasser. She is an award-winning journalist and before her time anchoring Global National, she was the anchor for Global News Toronto at 5:30 & 6. Providing viewers across the GTA much needed clarity for nearly two decades, she was on the ground reporting during major events such as the Toronto van attack, the London, Ont., terror attack which killed a Muslim family and was in Washington for the election of Joe Biden. She was the first journalist to be granted a one-on-one with PM Justin Trudeau after the country reopened after the pandemic lockdown in 2020. Nasser has been praised for furthering public discourse with her thought-provoking reporting and motivational public speaking. She created notable buzz on social media as the force behind #FirstTimeIWasCalled and #LivingInColour, two digital series’ exploring the experiences of marginalized peoples; she similarly received plaudits for her TEDx talk titled “The Power of Intellectual Humility.” She received an Edward R. Murrow award for Excellence in Diversity, Equity and Inclusion for her special Living in Colour: Being Black in Canada and is a back-to-back winner of the RTNDA Sam Ross Award for her viral commentaries 93 Killed a Day at the Barrel of a Gun (2018) and What if the fighting in Aleppo was happening in Toronto? (2017); the latter story was viewed 3.5 million times and used as a teaching aid in schools to explain the Syrian conflict. Nasser began her career with Rogers TV before accepting a position with Newstalk 1010 where she worked her way up to a reporting role. After landing this first major reporting gig, Nasser went on to hold various roles with Toronto 1, A-Channel News, Citytv, and CP24 before joining Global News. A graduate of Toronto Metropolitan University’s Radio and Television Arts program, she also attended the University of Westminster in London, England and later interned for CNN in New Delhi, India. When not reporting on the day’s headlines, Nasser spends her time volunteering in the community. She is a member of the board of directors of the Canadian Journalism Foundation and serves as a mentor for the Canadian Association of Journalists and for CivicAction, a non-profit that brings together senior and emerging leaders from diverse backgrounds. Nasser regularly speaks at community events and has worked with organizations such as Journalists for Human Rights, the Aga Khan Foundation and the Economic Club of Canada. Jully Black: Just the Beginning

40m · Published 06 Mar 06:36
Let me start here: Jully Black was nominated to come on this podcast by Cynthia Loyst BEFORE NBA All Star Weekend when she performed HER version of the Canadian National Anthem. What beautiful timing, eh? This interview also happened a few days after she shared an unfortunate e-mail she stumbled upon. There was a lot to cover…I especially loved hearing about how she found community as a young woman in the music business, and how she’s paying it forward to create community for others now. I hope you enjoy this conversation, she was a GREAT hang. Morganne Campbell of Global News

54m · Published 23 Jan 05:01
If you’ve been following along on my social media accounts over the years, you’ve seen a fair bit of this week’s guest. She was my first friend in Kingston, Ontario when I moved away for my first full-time radio job. She became the kind of friend I had to visit quarterly, or vice-versa after only seven months in the Limestone City. Our path’s crossed again when we both found ourselves single and trying to make it in the biggest broadcasting market in Canada: Toronto. With broken hearts and single-gal budgets, we became roommates (until she fell in love. I’m not mad about it!!) Morganne Campbell is a reporter and videographer, or as they call her at Global News, a digital broadcast journalist. Campbell was a videographer and assignment editor with CKWS TV in Kingston, Ont., before becoming a digital broadcast journalist in the Maritimes. She first joined Corus Entertainment in 2009 and became a familiar face in Kingston during her coverage of the Russell Williams and Shafia Family murder trials in 2011 and 2012, both of which were covered for Corus-owned television and radio stations across the country. Born and raised in Castleton, Ont., Morganne studied journalism at Loyalist College in Belleville, Ont., where she attended on a scholarship. Morganne has experience in print, radio and television working at stations across Ontario including CTV Barrie and CHEX News Peterborough and has instructed OPP officers in media courses at East Region Headquarters in Smiths Falls, Ont., in addition to volunteering and teaching young students about the industry. Tess Van Straaten: Destroying Double Standards

44m · Published 09 Jan 19:07
I'm, laughing. Tess is laughing. Why are we still policing what women wear on television in 2023? My first guest of the year is Tess van Straaten, an award-winning journalist, weather anchor & host for Chek News in Victoria. She's been working in broadcasting for 20+ years and you'll hear more about her story from Ontario to Victoria and everywhere in between. She is a fourth-generation Victorian, went to Carleton University in Ottawa and got her first big break working on Parliament Hill as a reporter. Anchor jobs across the country followed before Tess moved back to Victoria and joined CHEK News in 2009. Over the years, Tess has interviewed three of the last four prime ministers, broke many stories of national interest and had her reports air on CTV National News, CBC Newsworld and CNN. Career highlights include covering Royal Visits, going to Hudson Bay to see how climate change is affecting polar bears, and landing a coveted interview with a sky-diving wiener dog. Tess was also awarded a Queen’s Diamond Jubilee medal for her volunteer work. An avid traveller, Tess has been to more than 50 countries on six continents and lived ‘Down Under’ in Australia for three years. Read more about her viral sleeveless story HERE.
