84: Seeking validation vs. resonance.

18m · Published 15 Nov 08:16
This week I was seriously impressed by someone close to me who stood up for herself when she was put in a very intimidating situation. It inspired some thoughts about why it can be so hard for people to stand their ground, especially when they're focused on seeking validation. In this episode I share some examples of how an easy change in mindset can make a huge difference in finding your true fit, and how when people are so desperate to predict the future, they end up standing in their own way.

83: What's the answer I'm solving for?

20m · Published 08 Nov 08:44
It was one of those weeks where multiple themes spoke to me, and in this episode I unpack them all. I tell a story about recently encountering some of the anger fueling our modern world, a lost LinkedIn message that sparked some thought around solving problems, and someone who wanted my help but also wanted a short cut.

82: The answer you want and the answer you need

14m · Published 01 Nov 07:31
A lot of times when I'm talking to people about their fear of standing up for themselves, it comes down to one thing: they're afraid they won't get the response they want. But sometimes the response you don't want is actually the answer you needed all along. It could be a piece of information that validates your long-time frustrations or even finally, some honesty. In this episode, I cover a lot of ground and unpack the fear of advocating for yourself and tell some recent stories from people who've seen the impact that doing so can make.

81: There’s nothing disrespectful about advocating for yourself

14m · Published 25 Oct 07:14
It's come to my attention that there is a gap between certain people who are more willing to stand up for themselves than others, and that gap seems to be age. In this episode, I reflect on an article I recently read about "the respect gap", and unpack why it's so important for companies and people to lead with empathy. Plus, I break down why people seem so angry these days and the one topic of conversation that I don't think is worth anyone's time, yet doesn't seem to be going away.

80: Taking one for YOUR team.

11m · Published 18 Oct 07:46
Over the long weekend, I was somewhat forced to bask in a weekend alone - to enjoy some time with no agenda. I came away feeling so refreshed, I knew I had to talk about it on the podcast, and encourage you to do the same. In this episode, I discuss my downtime, the importance of finding some for you, and how taking care of your needs, your mental health, and your stress levels can come first.

79: Be the change you want to see.

17m · Published 11 Oct 07:38
It seems like everyday I'm impressed by something new that's changing our world. These changes to our world aren't always big, oftentimes they're small yet meaningful ideas developed out of an unsuspecting person. Everyone has a role to play in being the change you wish to see in the world, from creating the ideal workplace or community, to bringing attention to things that just aren't working. In this episode, I explore the power of taking initiative and being the change and what happens when people try, fail, try again, and quit letting ill-informed people tell them what works and what doesn't.

78: Let's talk about your "blindspots"

17m · Published 04 Oct 07:58
Over the last week I've heard way too many people chalking up bad behaviour to "blindspots", but are blindspots actually real or are they just a convenient escape from accountability?

In the first half of this episode, I explain how I think about and confront blindspots and lend some insight on how to address them yourself.

In the second half, I discuss some interesting developments in the corporate world, as I've been witnessing organizations try to shift their company culture for good.

Creating a more inclusive and empathetic workplace is always a good thing, but how do you get through to the complainers and people with those so-called "blindspots"?

77: Someone must be benefiting...

15m · Published 27 Sep 07:19
I had such a great response to my previous episode, and there's no doubt in my mind that it's because people are fed up with being taken advantage of by their work. In this episode I expand on this idea, helping you evaluate your workplace, discover who's really reaping the rewards of your hard work (and how to make sure it's you!), and I give you a key phrase to use in order set your boundaries in a way that won't ruffle any feathers.

76: Why narcissists are climbing the career ladder...

16m · Published 20 Sep 07:51
Many people in today's workforce are wondering why they're always the one "taking one for the team". If you relate to that sentiment, it's probably time to start re-evaluating if the people that you work with really understand your worth, and even know what it is that you do.

So why is it that it can feel like those who are doing the most reap the fewest rewards - and who's getting rewarded instead?

In this episode, I explore what I've learned from the BBC Worklife article, How narcissists climb the career ladder quickly, and how I think you can unleash your inner "narcissist" without it being at anyone's expense.
