Today’s episode is inspired by one of our listeners all the way from Ankara in Turkey, and she shared this question as part of the Listening Tour we did in May. "Digital skills - I know they’re important to have, but where do I start?" If you look up digital skills on Google, you’ll find various lists out there ranging from top 10 skills to some other websites that encourage learning as many as 60 digital trends. Instead of feeling like you need to cross every single skill on these lists.. we should start with asking ourselves: How can we create better outcomes for people and society by considering a digital approach to solving problems? Which of the digital trends are you most curious about to learn that will achieve this outcome? In todays episode I’m going to share 3 quick examples: Digital upskilling to pivot / grow your career Digital upskilling to augment your client experience & gain a competitive advantage for your business Become familiar with how digital trends are shaping our world The most important thing is to learn at your own pace, in a way that suits your style. and practice applying what you’ve learned. It may feel overwhelming at first, but the more you ask “wouldn’t it be amazing if" instead of looking at what’s been done before, the more you'll enjoy learning it your way and at your own pace. How can I build leadership experience in the new normal? In this episode, Julia van Graas and Steph Clarke from Spiique share how you can start by leading yourself, curating your leadership learning playlist, and become more courageous in realising your leadership potential - especially so in the new normal. Julia gets leadership teams collaborating and delivering results in challenging situations. Globally experienced, Julia is a sought-after advisor whose people-centred approach is heavily influenced by her experiences of achieving improbable results in turnaround and crisis situations. Trained as a Chartered Accountant, she subsequently studied psychology, is a qualified Organisational Coach, and a Certified Dare to LeadTM Facilitator. Steph helps teams be better teams. As an accountant-turned-facilitator, she realised that changes don’t happen through spreadsheets, but they can happen through post-it notes. She loves the creativity of designing new experiences for teams to have the conversations they need to, build trust, tame the elephants in the room, and come out stronger. To me, play-based learning to children are what “learning sand pits” are to adults. A learning sand pit is an avenue to discover, experiment, create, iterate and imagine in a way that is driven by your intrinsic motivation. I learn better by doing rather than over-thinking it. I learn best when there is skin in the game. Learning is a whole lot more fun when I get to experiment ideas outside of work without the red tape. What motivates me to build a learning sand pit? I’m a big believer in maximising opportunities around you to learn new skills. The biggest reason of all is that I find that when I apply skills across different situations, that's actually what makes me learn more effectively and makes me enjoy the learning process as well. In this episode, I share how I multiplied what I learned with my learning sand pits, built adaptability, agility and skills that are now part of my personal brand. Stop worrying about the "what if.." Instead, ask more of "wouldn't it be amazing if..." and what struggle or sacrifice you're willing to tolerate in order to solve the problems you care most about. Your competitive advantage lies in your ability to find a problem you care about, addressing the things you asked yourself - “wouldn’t it be amazing if” and solving these problems in a way that you want to be remembered for. Don’t forget to check out episode 60 - where I share my favourite formula for getting the ball rolling on a big ticket goal, called the 24-7-1 approach. Have you ever felt that your quiet nature is holding you back from being recognised for having what it takes to be a leader? In this episode, I invited Megumi Miki to join us here today to explore how your quiet nature is your hidden leadership strength, and how organisations can benefit from harnessing their hidden talent and uplifting their leaders’ effectiveness by using quieter approaches. Megumi is an author, speaker and consultant in leadership and culture, and the author of Quietly Powerful: How your quiet nature is your hidden leadership strength. In the uncertain, changing, global and inter-connected world, Megumi believes that the ‘alpha’ or ‘hero’ leadership style alone is outdated and inadequate. Quietly Powerful expands the definition of what good leadership looks, sounds and feels like and empowers quieter professionals and those outside majority groups to fulfil their leadership potential. https://www.linkedin.com/in/megumimiki/ https://www.megumimiki.com/ For more talent stack resources visit https://www.yishanchan.co/links

I started my podcast with a vision to share career stories usually shared over coffee about owning your future of work. Interesting stories about how people learn new skills to adapt their careers. Real stories about how people build portfolio careers alongside a 9-5. But I'd love to know if these topics are what you actually want? What would you like to hear more of from me? What kind of guests would you like to see more of on the show & what questions do you have for them? For a limited time only (as I have a 9-5 after all), you can book a 20 minute virtual coffee with me via Zoom to share what you're currently facing & what support you need from us in helping you own your future work. Look forward to seeing you soon! https://www.yishanchan.co/listeningtour
