In this episode, Mel & Pat discuss the book of the month.

Discussion: The Book The Power of No.

“You can please some of the people all of the time, you can please all of the people some of the time, but you can’t please all of the people all of the time”.

Attributed to the poet John Lygate and President Abraham Lincoln, though some say Abe never actually said it?

People-pleasing can be one of our greatest weaknesses.

Know and understand why you are doing something, the real purpose. Note the focus of someone who wants to be a doctor when they are young, they understand why they are getting educated and focus on it.

We have a schedule, make it and guard it. Items on a list will never get done until they are planned into a schedule.

Fail to plan and you plan to fail.

Do not overload your schedule. Give yourself enough time, yet, only enough. Not too long either.

Be quick to make decisions and slow to change them.

Being "Busy" has become some sort of badge of honour to be worn with pride.

Perception - How is busy seen?

1. Rude - we are busy too

2. Struggling - poor management.

3. Too busy - we won't recommend you, we don't want to kill you... Also we don't want YOU to let US down.

Saying "bye, bye, bye, bye...." and "busy, busy, busy" - think what message are you sending?

Power over the phone. Switch it off when you are in a meeting. If you answer the phone during a conversation you devalue the person you were speaking to.

Technology is our creation and we are the master.

We should not become enslaved to our technology.

All the GURU’s out there. Sales funnel courses and people getting sucked in to SHORT CUTS and GET RICH QUICK SCHEMES. Paying hundreds or thousands of pounds for courses. Small business owners getting pulled in to spend a lot of money no wonder they go out of business.

 

What percentage of businesses fail UK?

20% of small businesses fail in their first year, 30% of small business fail in their second year, and 50% of small businesses fail after five years in business. Finally, 70% of small business owners fail in their 10th year in business.15 Apr 2020
