1h 7m · Published 03 May 19:00

Welcome to Creating Structure Podcast # 49 with Lisa Lococo Smith of the Kawneer Collaborative. Lisa has an interesting path to the curtain wall industry, but always her work has centered around the people part of business; marketing, hospitality, sales, business development. Always positive, Lisa "chooses joy," and "choose happiness." You'll feel it in this discussion. We talk about Lisa's background, working with different types of people, sales, rejection, positivity, curtain wall, unitized curtain wall, Kawneer, trends, and more. We talk about the association and commonality with people, whether tending bar at The West End Tavern, or interacting with clients on a glazing project. We talk about her non-traditional path, which is not uncommon to this industry. This was recorded in September 2023, but the information and context is relevant to any time.

We cover a lot of ground here and I'll just let the podcast speak for itself.

Enjoy!

Creating Structure Podcast # 48: The Energy Episode - Mark Schow, P.E., Principal at Elevated Design Inc., David Kent, LEED AP, Director of Building Envelope Consulting, Wheaton Sprague Building Envelope

1h 4m · Published 21 Nov 21:00

Welcome to the energy discussion on the Creating Structure Podcast with Mark Schow, PE, and David Kent, LEED AP, Director of Consulting at Wheaton Sprague

Mark Schow, is a PE, founder & principal with ElevatedDesign.Boston Using Less Energy. By Design. He has worked on systems for a variety of building types. Saving energy through unique solutions and out of the box thinking is what drives him.

David Kent, LEED AP, is Director of Building Envelope Consulting with https://www.wheatonsprague.com . David leads the consulting division at WS and is experienced in a wide variety of building types and cladding systems.

We talk about Energy issues; Massachusetts- Stretch Code, Boston's BERDO- Energy Mandates, NY Local Law 97, and more. We discuss the relevance, importance, & often-overlooked interplay between HVAC and Building Enclosure systems.

How can building energy use be optimized in new and existing buildings not only in MA, but anywhere?

Massachusetts became the first state to adopt an above-code appendix to the "base" building energy code-the "Stretch Code". It emphasizes energy performance, as opposed to prescriptive requirements, and is designed to result in cost-effective construction that is more energy efficient than that built to the "base" energy code.

BERDO

Buildings account for nearly 70% of greenhouse gas emissions in Boston. The 2021 amendment to BERDO gives the City authority to set emissions standards for large existing buildings. The emissions standards will decrease over time, with all buildings achieving net zero emissions by 2050.

How do these things affect the building owner. Where do they start?

Energy mandates and thermal efficiencies are not going away. Listen, engage, comment, and let's keep the conversation going.

Creating Structure Podcast #45 - Ethan Bull, Co-founder / Best Selling Author / Reimagining Executive Assistant Support

1h 16m · Published 02 Aug 20:00

Welcome to Creating Structure Podcast # 45 with Ethan Bull, co-founder of ProAssisting, re-imagining Executive Support.

Through ProAssisting, Ethan leverages his 25+ years as a Sr. Executive Assistant to manage top-level, remote Executive Assistant (EA's) who serve clients ranging from 'next generation' CEO's who need support but want technology to enable that partnership to former CEOs and current BOD members who want the high-level support their used to but don't need an on-site, full-time employee.

With his wife Stephanie Bull  https://www.linkedin.com/in/stephaniebull/  CEO and Co-Founder of Pro-Assist they "wrote the book on remote executive assistance."

As noted in their website, "More and more people are looking for remote jobs; however, before remote work became the norm, we provided our clients with a remote and fractional executive assistant for administrative support as a cost-effective alternative to hiring an assistant in-house. Now, more than ever, our process is helping executives, business owners, and entrepreneurs thrive under challenging circumstances in a fast-paced environment."

Ethan is refreshing, insightful, candid, and helpful in his insight and background. If you have thought that you couldn't afford to hire an EA, think again. Listen to hear more about Ethan, his EA experience and journey, approach to fractional and full time remote EA support, and more. Thanks for listening!

Creating Structure Podcast #44 David Kent, LEED AP, Senior Design Consultant, Wheaton Sprague - "Facades That Inspire Series"

59m · Published 28 Jun 21:00

Welcome to the first of a sub-series we will run intermittently entitled  "Facades That Inspire," within the Creating Structure Podcast. This one is with my colleague and friend Mr. David Kent, LEED AP, Senior Design Consultant at Wheaton Sprague

Beginning his career in London, David has worked in exterior restoration, and curtain wall consulting for about two decades. He received a degree in Building Surveying in the UK, which focuses on the after care and adaptation of existing buildings and exteriors. His work experience spans a full range of construction typologies from social housing to high profile NYC land-marked properties such as the Park Avenue Armory and The Knox Hat Building at 452 Fifth Avenue and more. David's experience has lead to a thorough understanding of not only building exteriors, but their construction, operations, and systems of interiors. Mr. Kent brings his expertise and strong communication skills to every aspect of his work.

Facades That Inspire,  (enabling facades that inspire is our core purpose at Wheaton Sprague) can take many forms. While we've done monumental, visible, noteworthy custom glazed curtain wall systems on new and existing buildings, in this discussion we highlight a masonry facade on an alley wall, part of an 1800's vintage building in Boston. Why is it important, what were the issues, how was it restored?  Listen to the discussion for the case study.

And much thanks to our client, and architect, Olivia Dube, AIA, Owner and Principal  Tact and Grit Design Co. https://www.tactandgrit.com/

Creating Structure Podcast #43 with Arnold Swanborn, Design Principal, CO Architects

1h 13m · Published 24 May 20:00

Arnold Swanborn is a design principal with CO Architects in Los Angeles. With more than 30 years design experience, his career spans a wide array of project types, including small single-family commissions, technically challenging projects in the healthcare and higher education realms, commercially driven multi-family residential and office projects.

Arnold’s portfolio of work is consistently awarded and recognized by the profession for a commitment to creating experiential architecture specifically driven by place, tactility, and unique manipulation of natural light as material presence. All of these design considerations provide a variety of innovative environments for teaching, discovery, and healing that are dynamic and collaborative.

Born in The Netherlands, Arnold holds a Master of Science in Advanced Architecture Design from Columbia University and a Bachelor of Architecture from the University of Southern California.  Arnold is a California licensed architect, a member of the AIA, and a LEED-Accredited Professional.

Arnold is well-known for designing award-winning buildings, investigating new ways to enrich lives, fulfill functional and technical expectations, and appeal as fully to the senses as to the intellect. His work focuses on connecting people to place and leading by example through the design of sustainable buildings that are responsive to their environments. Arnold has played an instrumental role in the design of many iconic projects across the US and abroad. His work includes the widely publicized Health Sciences Innovation Building, Biomedical Sciences Partnership Building, and Health Sciences Education Building at the University of Arizona. Prior to CO, Arnold’s experience included the Museum Tower in Dallas, the centerpiece of the Dallas Arts District, and Met Lofts in downtown Los Angeles.

Fundamental to Arnold’s architectural approach is the belief that great ideas can come from anyone and anywhere. He encourages a diversity of opinions to enrich each project. To that end, along with teaching commitments at the University of Southern California and serving as a frequent juror of student work at local and national schools, Arnold is an active mentor to young designers and architects. He sees mentorship as an essential responsibility to architectural practice.
