Creating Structure Podcast #36: John Skok, RA, Architect, Principal at McIntosh Poris Associates

1h 9m · Published 19 Aug 16:00

In this episode it was my pleasure to welcome Mr John Skok, RA, Architect. Of course we talk about John's background and journey into architecture, but the main focus of this episode is urban architecture, and specifically Detroit architecture. We talk about what John refers to as "The Detroit Opportunity." Starting in college, John has devoted many years to work specifically in Detroit, both in repurposed and new buildings. But there's a strong emphasis here on urban renewal, reclaiming or repurposing buildings, and the momentum John has seen build over the course of two-plus decades in his work with McIntosh Poris Architects. Enjoy the the architect's perspective and view point as we journey together. Thanks for listening!

Creating Structure Podcast #34: The Specialty Facade Engineering Session-Diarmuid Kelleher, PE, Dave Dunham, PE, Sentech Architectural Systems

1h 8m · Published 19 Aug 14:00

Welcome to the "geek out" episode, where three normal, balanced humans, who happen to be engineers, and who happen to have glass and aluminum in their DNA profiles, discuss engineering of glazed facades, specialty glass, technical applications, value propositions, and more. We talk about the role of engineering, Sentech's specialty work, thermal performance, structural engineering, wall movements, building codes, material optimization, and much more. Also, how about ordering and handling a 75' x 12' piece of glass? That's some big stuff.

Diarmuid Kelleher, PE, is Director of Engineering for Sentech. He grew up in Ireland on a 60 acre dairy farm. He came to the USA  in 2008. He's worked for such notable's as Larson Engineering, Permasteelisa North America Corp, Thorton Tomasetti, and Inhabit, on his progression to Sentech. He leads all engineering production work from time of sale to point of fab and construction. I think you'll enjoy his insights.

Dave Dunham, PE, is the Director Of Business Development at Sentech. Dave has worked there as engineering manager, and pre-sales engineer manager on his path to the current position in business development, sales, proposal work. He he leads the sales team, does a significant amount of Design-Assist work and consultation (DA) and facilitates a high level of collaboration between business development and engineering.

Have fun, and enjoy this episode.

Creating Structure Podcast #35: Andrew Haring, Vice President Business Development , National Glass Association, Glass Nerd.

1h 5m · Published 19 Aug 14:00

Welcome to the podcast, the one, the only, Mr. Andrew Haring, VP, Business Development, NGA (The National Glass Association.) We had some fun together on this episode, and there's also a lot of insights into Andrew's path, experiences, views of marketing, development in the glass industry, and more. I heard a man of principal, who really expresses humility and gratitude, to go with his knowledge and experience.

Andrew started as a graphic designer, and quickly moved from the architectural services world into the CR Laurence Company (now part of OBE) eventually rising to the role of Vice President of Marketing. Andrew has been the VP of Business Development for NGA for 4 years now. He's a frequent presence on social media, especially LinkedIn and Twitter. Andrew has a great sense of humor and we enjoy some sparring from time to time.

We talk in some depth about marketing, and the differences between marketing, business development, and sales. We talk glass industry and what NGA is all about as well.

And this episode would not be complete without talking about our expanding league of GRILLING, as in cooking meat over charcoal. There's special event being planned also around this activity at Glass Build. Listen to the very end!

Enjoy the show, leave a comment, share with a friend.
