Creating Structure Podcast #31 Mark Silverberg, Former President (Retired), Technoform NA, Stern & Company, Consultant, Now Volunteer to Non Profits

1h 5m · Published 06 Mar 15:00

Better late than never? Definitely with this Podcast.

After some "technical difficulties," my audio producer extraordinaire, Joshua (see below for links), got this synced and edited to publishable form.

So without further delay,  I am pleased introduce my conversation with friend, collaborator, executive thought leader, former owner of two businesses,  Mr. Mark Silverberg.

This episode was recorded in January 2022. After listening to it three times, there's so many nuggets of wisdom, relevant story telling, and sharing of experiences that can resonate with many.

Mark loved construction from an early age. Among other ventures, his father and uncle were in the glazing business. An Ohio boy, Mark is a long time Cleveland area (east-sider) resident. After graduating from  Oakland University in Michigan, Mark joined the trades and became a journeyman electrician. After six years, he started his path in business ownership and management with his father, then owning and running Stern and Company, then co-founding and running Technoform North America, first as GM then as President.

Some topics discussed include:

  • Learning how to prioritize
  • Strategic thinking
  • Customer mindsets
  • Industry committee work and value
  • Business ownership
  • Start-up operations
  • Glazing industry components
  • Thermal breaks, warm edge spacers
  • Non- Profit work
  • Preparation
  • Working for the common good
  • And a good Dylan quote deep into the podcast related to Mark's "why"

Creating Structure Podcast #30, Kevin McClintick, PE, CEO, Principal Design Engineer, AWS Inc

1h 17m · Published 21 Jan 14:00

Kevin McClintick, PE, is a professional engineer, company founder and owner of Architectural Wall Systems, Inc, (AWS), Director of MCAL Software, LLC, and a structural and systems engineering specialist in curtain wall, cladding, exterior architectural component systems.

This is a unique and engaging discussion between industry peers, competitors, and professional engineers - two company founders, CEO's, curtain wall/cladding/facade design professionals, PE's, riffing about and romping through a wide swath of industry history, present reality, and future trending/shaping. We discuss architecture, engineering, value, making the client the hero, and more.

1 hour and 17 minutes of pure gold. (There's a few second gap at 34:20 to 34:25 or so due to a messy internet connection. Please bear with the pause and transition there. Otherwise, strap in!

Some Topics:

  • What do structural engineers in the glass/glazing/curtain wall industry do? How do they provide value? (or how should they provide value?)
  • Making the client the hero
  • Client first; begin with the end in mind
  • Providing what's right and true vs. being conservative and subjective
  • Risk and liability
  • What's "behind the PE stamp"
  • Thinking like the client-the installer
  • Training
  • Experience
  • Virtual design and construction
  • Industry icons
  • Early engineering pioneers in the curtain wall space

Kevin also talks about their Trademarked brand "Engineer TRUE". There's so much more. You'll just have to listen to hear the rest!

Creating Structure Podcast #29, Oliver Stepe, President, YKK AP America Inc.

1h 3m · Published 22 Dec 14:00

Just in time to ring in the new year I welcome Oliver Stepe, President, YKK AP America Inc., to the program. This inspiring and informative interview covers Oliver's path from growing up in Long Island, to college, to glazing sub contractor, to US Aluminum, to YKK, and his ascension from regional technical  sales professional to President of the business. Oliver has great insights into team-building, adding value, consultative sales, approaching work, analytics, new ideas, marketing, thought leadership, manufacturing, and current trends. I found it very informative to listen back prior to final posting and production.

From his LinkedIn bio, "(He) oversees the North American architectural products business including commercial, residential, and related operating units, building loyal customers, engaged employees, and trying to making a positive difference in the lives of our employees and the industries and communities in which we work. We call it The Cycle of Goodness

I find Oliver to be a thoughtful executive leader. Enjoy the show. Leave a comment. Engage with the community.

Creating Structure Podcast #28, Rens F. Hayes, IV, PE, Principal at H+O Structural Engineering

58m · Published 09 Dec 14:00

Rens F Hayes, IV, PE, is a Co-founder and Principal of H+O Structural Engineering.  A 2010 graduate from Worcester Polytechnic Institute with a BSCE, and obtaining also a MSCE from WPI in 2012, Rens has fast-tracked his professional growth. With a personal and family history in business, Rens co-founded H + O in 2016.  Rens is progressive, mature, and experienced beyond his years, and is inspiring. He is quite prolific in his writing, influencer posts on LinkedIn, and participation in the PSMJ Executive Forum where he and I first met via email. We found ourselves liking what the other had to say on certain issues which led to our connecting, and then to this Podcast.

Rens's firm specializes in mid- and high-rise building design. They serve Architects and Real Estate Developers primarily. Their mission is  "A Better Experience - for our team and for our clients." They are focused on real results and protecting their client's investments. We talk about some of these things and more in this podcast. Their website banner says it; "Structural Engineers actually focused on your results."

We cover business, life, growing up in construction and business, value propositions, remote and hybrid workforce, Boston area growth, building typology, people, brand, social media contexts, physiology and more. You'll know when we recorded as I make a reference to the Cleveland Browns vs. New England Patriots game that was about to be played. We all know how that turned out!

Enjoy the podcast. See the show notes and links below. Thanks for engaging.

Creating Structure Podcast #27, Diana Darling, Co-Founder, President of AN Media Group

1h 7m · Published 10 Nov 19:00

In this episode I welcome Diana Darling to the podcast. Entrepreneur, publisher, co-founder, founder, idea generator,  president, influencer, event developer, and more can be used to describe Diana professionally. Like many of our guests, her path is interesting. From Texas to London to New York, and points between, Diana has a unique path. You'll hear about it in the podcast.

I met Diana through one of the first Facades + events, one of her education and networking venues. I have enjoyed getting to know her over the years.  Diana, with her husband and business partner, William "Bill" Menking (1947-2020,) founded the AN Media Group and The Architect's Newspaper. There are other businesses within the AN Media umbrella including CE Strong, AN Interior and TECH +.

Diana says on her LinkedIn profile, "The best part of being a business owner is networking with other AEC business owners." She and AN are providing critical thinking in architecture, buildings, and planning, art, urban design, and more, along with bringing together "communities" through the publishing and the event venues. Diana's energy is a big draw and her influence is measurable. As typically is the case, we discuss quite a few things and romp through various topics. There's substantive resources below in the links to her companies and venues.

Enjoy, comment, join the conversation

And thanks for engaging!
