Bestselling Author/Illustrator of "Drawing Comfort for Chronic Conditions" Evie Lennon Tells Her Compelling Story

30m · Published 11 Mar 00:37

Bestselling author/illustrator Evie Lennon joined Ben on Zoom to discuss her incredible story and her book "Drawing Comfort for Chronic Conditions. This is an episode you will not want to miss! It was truly an honor having Evie on the show -we highly recommend you check it out!

About Evie:

Bestselling author/illustrator Evie Lennon relied on her background to deliver overdue support to the disabled in her book “Drawing Comfort for Chronic Conditions.”  “Drawing” is a reference to teaching art to at-risk students, while “Comfort” refers to a second career as an unlikely hospital chaplain when too many family members met an early death.

The deepest well of wisdom Lennon draws on though, is the one she shares with our clients who have faced adversity. A debilitating illness left her permanently disabled, on the heels of adopting her daughter who sustained a spinal cord injury as an infant in her biological family.

Those situations dovetailed to thrust Lennon into everything wrong with how society receives people with long-term disabilities and incurable illnesses. Her personal history coupled with her clinical training and experience deepened Lennon’s concern about the level of duress that disabled people were going through multiple losses without the support that she knew should absolutely be in place.

Lennon completed an internship and residency in Clinical Pastoral Education as a Hospital Chaplain. She holds a Bachelor’s, Master’s, and Lifetime Teaching Certification in Art.

It was in the halls of hospitals and schools that she learned about the redemptive power of art and encouragement to restore dignity and rekindle spirits. She leaned on those life lessons during her family’s medical ordeals.

However, Lennon credits her daughter “Alma Mater with teaching her the most. Together they enjoy traveling to Alma’s Wheelchair Basketball tournaments and bring a team of advocates for other people who are “chronically heroic.”

When she isn’t in the bleachers, she is cheering on readers from her bed where she shares the insights, art projects, and true stories that most helped her survive in hopes that you can "Draw Comfort."

Attorney Kevin Mottley Joined Us to Discuss the Ins and Outs of Traumatic Brain Injury Cases

41m · Published 02 Nov 15:38

Attorney Kevin Mottley stopped by the LiveLifeBig studio to chat with Ben about his experience with traumatic brain injury (TBI) cases. It was very interesting to hear Kevin explain all of the tiny, important details that go into each individual TBI case.

TBI cases, particularly those involving the so-called “mild” traumatic brain injuries, are distinct from other kinds of personal injury cases. A mild TBI is a “hidden” or “silent” injury. Objective proof of the injury seldom exists, as the injury typically does not show up on an MRI or a CT scan of the brain. A person suffering from one of these injuries may look normal to the casual observer. But the victim’s family, close friends, doctors, and therapists know something is wrong.

Kevin began his legal career as a defense lawyer at a large corporate law firm in downtown Richmond. He represented large corporations in personal injury cases and business disputes.

It was while defending one of these lawsuits that Kevin first learned about traumatic brain injury (“TBI”) and the devastating, hidden grip it can have on its victims. Representing traumatic brain injury survivors has since become Kevin’s passion. Kevin wrote the book, Brain Case: The Big 5 Questions to Answer Before Filing Your Brain Injury Case, to help people understand how lawyers look at TBI cases. His focus on representing TBI victims has, thus far, resulted in over $19 million in verdicts and settlements for his clients in mild TBI cases.
