What's the best career advice you have ever received?

Lisa Nichols told me to use my day job to fund my dream. It was amazing advice that I wish I had followed.

What is your proudest career accomplishment and why?

My proudest career accomplishment was receiving an Honorary Doctorate Degree of Humane Letters from Indiana Tech University for my 20 years of service in arts, education, business, teaching, and publishing. It was by far, one of the proudest moments in my life.

What has been the hardest career moment and how did you overcome it?

The hardest career moment has been building a business with little money to invest. I have taken advantage of free training, online resources and groups and I've learned to stretch my resources and make them work for me.

YTE 047: Who’s That Housewife with Courtney Love Gavin

55m · Published 19 Mar 13:00

What is PR? Does your business even need PR? How can you increase your exposure with a $0 budget? All of that and more will be answered in this episode as we dive into the world of PR and what every business owner needs to know (Ps. PR is part of your overall marketing strategy at least it should be).

Plus, find out how Courtney created her hit board game, “Who’s That Housewife!?” with less than 10 followers on social media, no email list, made a profit, and was picked up by major news sources like People and BuzzFeed.

--------

What's the best career advice you have ever received?

The best career advice I ever received was that in order to be heard speak into their language. That career advice came from my business coach, Andrea Woolf.

What is your proudest career accomplishment and why?

My proudest career accomplishment is launching Who's That Housewife!? and making it a sustainable business. I had a lot of doubters for leaving a high six-figure corporate career to launch my  “silly housewives game” but instead of letting that sway me or doubt creep in, I remained laser-focused on what I wanted to accomplish. I joke that PR stands for perseverance and resilience because those are the keys to success in public relations, and I’ve found that translates well to entrepreneurship.

What has been the hardest career moment and how did you overcome it?

My hardest career moment was when doing my job well, meant being out of my integrity. I overcame it by getting super clear on what I needed in my ideal career and going after it. That ultimately meant leaving the company I was at and going into entrepreneurship full time.

YTE 045" Branding with Bianca Broos

41m · Published 05 Mar 14:00

What is branding? How is branding different from marketing? Is branding different from marketing? Why crafting a brand identity for your business is so important and how to own your own business while also being a mom.

--------

What's the best career advice you have ever received?

This is not about fame. It's about impact.

"Fake it til you make it.' It’s a thing we say. It’s meant to be encouraging: “you got this, it’s doesn't have to be perfect, act as if and the rest will follow...” Great. But, in my experience, humans have what it takes. We don’t need to fake it. Confidence comes from knowing who you are and knowing when you don’t know what you need to know, but feeling good about asking for help, being curious about new possibilities.

Running this company, I’m continually confronted with ideas, needs wants of clients and their brand. Our job is to make it, with humility and grace, confidently making the next good decision. You don’t have to fake it. You’ve got what it takes. And when something new comes up, develop curiosity and ask for help.

What is your proudest career accomplishment and why?

Being able to impact the businesses of other entrepreneurs. It's something that I get to engage in daily, and it's a privilege so see how creating small spaces for change can help them propel to their next level of success. It's like that saying goes, when the tide comes into the harbor, all boats rise. I believe that is our role as entrepreneurs.

What has been the hardest career moment and how did you overcome it?

The place of growth. How did I overcome it (see my favorite quote)

Favorite quote:

DO THE WORK. I say it at least 10 times daily.

Also, "Your work is an expression of who you are. So go out there and do that work.”

YTE 043: How to hire a virtual assistant with Trivinia Barber | Priority VA

54m · Published 20 Feb 14:00

In this episode, we talked about speaking on stage, VA hiring, marketing, how to ask yourself those tough questions you need to be asking right now, how to stand out in Facebook groups, why niching down is so important and how it will save you money. Bonus, learn how Trivinia grew a 7 figure business while working a full-time job.

--------

What's the best career advice you have ever received?

“You’ll never fully embrace being a CEO as long as you’re acting like an employee for someone else.” - Todd Herman

What is your proudest career accomplishment and why?

Growing a business to 7 figures while still working nearly full time. It took tenacity, grit and a lot of perseverance to deliver high quality for my clients, and create a business that I loved.

What has been the hardest career moment and how did you overcome it?

Hands down the worst day in business and one of my biggest learning lessons came when I lost one of our biggest clients because he lost funds. I had to tell 13 VAs that they no longer had a job. This several years ago and I was so excited because this client was a good portion of our bottom line.

It forced me to innovate and find new solutions and products to offer so I could continue to provide job opportunities to these women I’d come to admire.

My team and I quickly came up with products to sell that we could delegate to the VAs who just had a blow to their income.
