152. Becoming the Funding Guru with Matt Haycox

28m · Published 29 Jun 12:30

Matt Haycox built his empire up as a hungry 20 something year old in the mid 2000’s and lost it all in spectacular fashion in 2008. He had a new born daughter to feed and wasn’t cut out for a life of poverty so he had no choice but to ignore the advice of the ‘experts’ who told him he was finished and would never work again. He started back from scratch and came back bigger and stronger!

Having learnt from his mistakes, he now spends his time ensuring his customers and the businesses he invests in & run can learn from his experiences and don’t have to suffer the same pitfalls, getting to where they want to be faster and smoother!

There is no such thing as ‘self made’! We all need mentors, advisors, partners and usually funders. And when it comes to funding, he really has funded it all! From factory machinery to desktop computers, new buildings to liquidated stock. From football clubs to other lenders, music festivals to haulage companies. As well as finance, his group now includes interest in luxury fashion retail, e-commerce, EPOS systems, property, banking platforms & events.

Matt now splits his time between Dubai, Spain, and the UK.

151. Making a Difference in the End with Sheila Hogan

36m · Published 15 Jun 12:30

Sheila Hogan was inspired to start Biscuit Tin following the death of her parents. They had a Biscuit Tin full of papers, notes and photos but finding everything she needed was difficult and stressful. Her mission was simple: find a solution to remove hassle and stress when someone close passes away. Sheila was sure there had to be a way to ease the burden of paperwork, endless decisions and uncertainty that had weighed heavy on her shoulders. As the idea formed, Sheila built a strong team around her and gained early interest from investors and the media alike. In a world where there are digital tools to simplify almost every area of our lives, not having one to close them down seems like a glaring omission.

148. Finding the Perfect Balance with Nicki Mawby

37m · Published 25 May 12:30

Nicki Mawby is the owner of HR Your Business Matters, a people consultancy providing business owners with support covering HR, Recruitment and Leadership development.

Her background covers both operations and HR, where she managed teams of 80+ people within operations turning over more than 10 million a year, before starting her own business in 2015.

Nicki believes her success comes from understanding the true needs of business owners and leaders within small businesses, especially those working operationally in their business, struggling to build a high performing team that allows them to step away from the day to day and work on their business instead of in it.

Nicki explains that it’s more than just providing clients with frameworks, processes, policies, training and ensuring legal compliance. We know all of our clients, to the extent we become a natural extension to their business and team. We know their aspirations, goals and pain points and work with them to ensure they achieve these aspirations through their teams.

Nicki champions authenticity within business and freely admits that the services provided by her, and the team are not typical of what people’s perception of HR is. That’s why HRYBM has seen huge growth over the last 8 years and now supports hundreds of businesses in both regulated and unregulated industries across Cambridgeshire and surrounding regions.

Alongside the business, Nicki also teaches CIPD and Leadership qualifications alongside the operational people management training provided by HRYBM.

In 2023 Nicki launched the People Academy Community on Facebook, a place for leaders to learn in a relaxed and social environment surrounded by support.

Nicki is also a passionate supporter and Trustee for Evolve, a counselling charity based in Cambridgeshire that provides affordable counselling services to those in need.

Nicki values the balance that having a great team in place can achieve. Currently living in Cambridgeshire, with offices in Lincolnshire, Nicki loves travelling across the UK and abroad with her children and taking time out for her own professional and personal development.

She discovered that many others were struggling, just like she once was.
