Ali Muhammad - Discipline in Business and Life

1h 32m · Published 20 Jun 09:15

Good People. I should tell you first that this interview contains explicit language. So if you have little ones around, tell them to come listen when they're 18. This interview with Ali Muhammad was the most relaxed interview I've done - and by relaxed I mean, we ordered some chicken (which he ate), got some other food and drink - it was literally a recording of a conversation over a meal.

Ali Muhammad is the Co-Host of In the Conversation Podcast so he's no stranger to the audio platform. He calls himself a professional storyteller and drops so many wise comments in our conversation. He believes being in any religion of any kind - no matter if you're Christian, Islam or Buddhist, it requires discipline. This conversation has laughs, wisdom and of course...swearing.

Pony Gayle: Living Truth Through Creativity

1h 4m · Published 13 Jun 09:35

Having worked on critically acclaimed shows like The Soprano’s and Sex And The City, it’s obvious that our next guest has was it takes to be a veteran producer, writer and filmmaker. On the 14th episode of The Truth Prescription, Pony Gayle joins the Doctor’s Office.

Pony is currently working on the docu-series "Outrageous," which tells real stories of people in the LBGTQ community and their allies which is on Amazon Prime. She was hearing from others that stories of different people weren’t being told so she wanted to provide a space and a show that reflected the world. Pony wanted to use film and art to educate people who aren’t LGBT to have a different experience. It was Pony’s mother, who was diagnosed with polio when she was 7; right before they developed the vaccine that suggested she take an internship at a Cable company. In this episode we talk about:

  • How Pony’s mother was a huge inspiration given she had achieved so much with a disability
  • How she came to a place of sobriety and truth
  • Creativity is a must in her to maintain authenticity in her life

Ardenia Brown: Changing Careers and Cooking for Celebs

44m · Published 06 Jun 09:00

Good people,

Today I'm joined by Ardenia Brown, also known as Chef Butta. Ardenia is part of my family, one of my cousins; she is the personal chef for Ahmir Thompson, Questlove, specializing in Farm-To-Fork Cuisine and Holistic Juicing using local organic wild ingredients.

Chef Butta's truth is about self-acceptance. Throughout her childhood, she felt ignored, not heard, and forced to be what she was supposed to be. She built a successful career in the music industry in Los Angeles, and one day, Ardenia had to abandon everything and come back to take care of her sick mother. Far from home, Ardenia explored and found out who she was, she found her true self, and that is how she showed up many years later in her hometown to her mother and her family.

We had a fantastic conversation about health, food, and the food industry, the "heartset" used by Ardenia to switch from the entertainment industry into a celebrity chef, how she managed to differentiate herself and cut through the noise in the food industry, and the vital relevance of family and connections.

In This Episode, You Will Learn:

  • Ardenia shares her truth (5:26)
  • About the pressure families put on us rewarding what and how we are supposed to be (11:39)
  • How it was for Ardenia to abandon her lifestyle in LA and come back home to take care of her mother (15:06)
  • What turns food into good food (19:18)
  • About how Ardenia differentiated herself from other chefs (22:45)

Chris Bello: Leap Outside the Box

46m · Published 30 May 10:00

Good People,

In 2018 I had the pleasure of talking to Chris Bello. Chris was born in New York, now lives in Houston, and went the traditional path. Like many people on my show, he left the traditional path to be an entrepreneur. He’s a real estate investor, a host of his own podcast called Entrepreneur Motivation.

Our conversation was a good one with a lot of synergy between us. For his Personal Truth, he talked about how he realized he didn’t have to live inside a box. When we’re born and we go through our day with everybody telling us what to do, where to go, and who to be, it puts you in a box. He realized that he didn’t need to live that way, and he can be successful in other ways.

It’s all about serving what’s inside of you. If you’ve got something side of you that’s burning, telling you to go elsewhere, then you’ve got to go for it. Don’t be afraid to step outside of the box. Find the right time for you to take that leap, and just do it.

Sit back, relax, close your eyes, and open your ears. I hope you enjoy the show.

Some Questions I Ask:

  • How Chris realized he didn’t want to live the corporate life. (4:05)
  • Talk to us about the abundance versus scarcity mindset. (13:31)
  • Tell us a little about productivity, why it’s important, and why a foundational schedule is important as well. (24:51)
  • When is the optimal time for someone to quit their job? (33:18)

In This Episode, You Will Learn:

  • How society creates employees, not entrepreneurs. (8:58)
  • How Chris Bello has spread this message to 19,000 people. (16:44)
  • The 3-step process to move from dreaming to doing. (20:49)
  • How to tackle imposter syndrome through podcasting. (43:44)

42m · Published 02 May 09:33

Bob Cafaro is a motivational speaker, author, and professional cellist with the Philadelphia Orchestra. At the height of his music career, Bob was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis. Facing impossible odds – and a fair share of naysayers – Bob accomplished the unthinkable and won his battle against the life-threatening disease. Today he shares his incredible story. Bob also talks about the personal epiphanies he experienced while fighting for his life.

Topics include:

  • How a short story helped save his life
  • His disciplined lifestyle and diet (and why it works)
  • Gaining new perspectives
  • Admiring people who achieve the impossible

Bob Cafaro has been a cellist with the Philadelphia Orchestra since 1985. In early 1999, Bob was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis. Six months later he was nearly blind, unable to use his hands, and he was told he would be on permanent disability. Refusing to accept his prognosis, Bob set out to cure himself of the disease. He has since continued his career as a cellist with the Philadelphia Orchestra. Today he is in perfect health and shows no signs of MS. In his new book, When The Music Stopped: My Battle and Victory against MS, Bob shares the knowledge he gained from extensive research, personal life experiences, and studying people who have accomplished the impossible.

Todd Herman: The Superpowers of the Alter Ego

46m · Published 25 Apr 09:00

In 2019, the Truth Prescription welcomed Todd Herman. Todd is a global high performance coach and practitioner who works with professional athletes, CEOs, entrepreneurs and businesses. He’s someone who I wanted on the show because of his BS intolerance. Todd has a leadership and skills development program, 90 Day Year, that was born out of his work with athletes. The program asks you to look at your skills, the things that make you successful, and identify which one would yield the biggest impact if you laser focused on it for 90 days? Todd says that type of focus and discipline can create a years worth of results in 90 days.

Time Stamps:

[3:21]

  • Personal Truth: Todd grew up on a large farm and ranch in Western Canada, what he calls the middle of nowhere. He didn’t have the same affinity as his older brother did for being a farmer and always had a draw to living in a big city. Being a, self proclaimed, massive extrovert he loves being around people. As soon as summer hit, he would do whatever he could to leave the farm, spending many weeks away at camps. When he was 12, while away at a church camp, he was subjected to a traumatic experience. Filled with shame, he didn’t tell anyone. He came home, dropped his bags and jumped in the pool to drown himself. After multiple other suicide attempts throughout his life, he was lead to a breaking point. Having been so successful, for so long at managing that pain, he was finally at a point where he had to face it head on, work through it and share the truth about what happened. He did, the truth set him free and he was met with an immense amount of support and love.

[10:43]

  • Professional Truth: Todd has built a lot of his career on speaking and being on stages. He took a hiatus from the speaking circuit to build up his online platform when he and his wife were planning their family. He learned the importance of first impression at a young age and talks us about a speech he gave, on the topic, at a student council event. Ironically, at the end the speech, he realized that he had a very noticeable wardrobe malfunction (talk about first impression). Todd’s professional truth is that he’s able to think quickly and has a sharp tongue. He faced it down, applied his truth and received a huge standing ovation.

[14:44]

Interested and Committed: I ask Todd what happens when he knows the answers (the truth) and his clients aren’t ready to hear it? He puts the ball in their court, asking “do you actually want to know to the answer? Are you ready for it?”

Alter Ego: We talk about Todd’s book, the alter ego and the heroic self. He says his book is based on the fundamental truth of the human psyche; each one of us has used alter egos, personas and secret identities, tapping into that untethered creative imagination.

  • Five Pillars of Business: These are the areas of business that Todd has identified to help his clients navigate their area of focus. He’s created a comprehensive, quantifiable diagnostic that really helps his clients gain clarity about where they need to take action and what is right for them.

Raj Jana: Coffee, Passion, Wisdom, and Gratitude

55m · Published 18 Apr 10:00

Good People,

In 2019 I had the pleasure of speaking Raj Jana. Raj is the CEO and Founder of JavaPresse, the host of the weekly podcast Stay Grounded and a business coach who specializes in branding, turning ordinary products into extraordinary commodities that people will love.

He talks to us about the truth about American Dream, the pivotal moment that changed the course of his life and how he uses gratitude to as, both, the framework for his business and the foundation of his leadership style.

What most resonated about Raj’s story is how much wisdom he’s garnered at such a young age. His message also ties into a common theme that we’ve heard since the first dose of the Truth Prescription: stay true to you. Anytime you try to follow, what I like to call, a pres-prescribed prescription for your life, it’s not going to work. We’re all unique and special individuals, with unique and special gifts to give in a unique and special way. Tune in to learn how Raj tapped in, took action and carved out his own unique and special path.

7:17 Professional Truth:

In summary, Raj’s professional truth is when you follow the American Dream it can become the American Nightmare, if the dream you’re pursuing isn’t your own. Raj came out of school and started working as a petroleum engineer, making 6 figures. On paper, everything looked great - except that he wasn’t very fulfilled and wasn’t experiencing life in the way that he wanted. All throughout high school and college, he worked hard and always had something to show for his efforts. Things were a bit different now, he realized that he’d have to wait 40 years until he’d have something to show for his career. It was through the sudden loss of his mentor that he was inspired into action. He began his company, Java Presse, in 2015, as a side hustle and when his mentor passed away, that side hustle became a primary career focus. Raj says that entrepreneurship wasn’t something he wanted; it became something that he needed.

17:00 Personal Truth:

Raj’s personal truth is about the benefits of using our relationships to discover who we are, not validate who we think we are. He talks about how being in a long-distance relationship forced him and his girlfriend to have a relationship with themselves and how much they were able to discover and explore during that time. Raj says using our relationships with others as a vehicle to create a relationship with ourselves is powerful because the way we show up in our relationships is indicative of how we show up in the other areas of our lives.

20:45 Wisdom

I really admire Raj. A lot of the wisdom that he has is something that many don’t gain until later in life, I was curious to know where that stems from. He believes it’s the result of his investing so much in himself. He has a lot of mentors and has learned to develop a strong interest in whatever he’s learning; one of those areas of interest is exploring himself and becoming more self-aware. He has a lot of curiosity about Raj, who he is, how he operates and uses meditation, journaling and visualization to tune in.

32:55 Gratitude:
