Heather Grzych: How to Get in Touch with Your Body with Fasting & Ayurveda

45m · Published 11 Apr 10:00

Good People,

In 2020 I had the pleasure of interviewing Heather Grzych, an Ayurvedic practitioner. Ayurveda is an ancient Indian medicine that has had huge impacts on her life and work. Heather is also the author of The Ayurvedic Guide to Fertility

To get our conversation started, Heather shared her personal truth: she held on to all this pain and anger for the ways her father treated her. She detailed the events and thought processes that led up to her breakthrough in that moment, where during an argument she was able to disarm him and connect with him. With this, we shifted slightly to talk about the power of speaking truth in the face of negativity

Going deeper, Heather shares about her research and personal experiences with Ayurveda, what her fasting practice looks like and why she does it, and how women can naturally conceive a child through Ayurveda without having to go through heroic scenarios like surgery, implantation, or IVF.

This is a powerful conversation. So sit back, relax, and I’ll see you soon.

Some Questions I Ask:

  • Why is fasting important? (22:36)
  • Why did you decide to write your book? (36:06)
  • How can people get in contact with you? (43:43)

In This Episode You Will Learn:

  • How yoga unlocked Heather’s personal truth. (3:02)
  • How meditation taught Heather to recognize her father’s abusive patterns and see the truth. (14:37)
  • What health benefits come from fasting. (28:37)
  • What spiritual benefits come from fasting. (29:18)
  • What women will learn from Heather’s book The Ayurvedic Guide to Fertility. (42:37)

They are the founders of Holy & Human, a space created to offer support for souls having a human experience, and hosts of the Holy & Human podcast, a podcast for mystics.

My Consciousness: I Had to Lose it All to Gain Everything

16m · Published 07 Mar 10:00

Good People,

On today’s episode, I dive into a personal story of mine about me before consciousness. I had to find and discover my own consciousness. Being self-aware and conscious doesn't just happen. It's not something you're able to have without one day and have the next morning when you wake up. It takes time. It takes practice and self-discipline. And sometimes it takes certain circumstances to get you to that point. For me, this point happened a couple of years ago.

Through a series of events, I could have never seen coming I chose myself. My health, relationship, and career were at stake. When I looked around these three things became harder to hold onto. However, in a moment of self-reflection, I chose my own consciousness and well-being. And that choice was everything.

Host: Dr. Seku Gathers

Time Stamps:

[1:52] Back in 2007, I worked in the E.R department. Back then I didn’t know anything about consciousness. This lack of consciousness translated into my work. One night, on the fourth or fifth consecutive night of working overnight shifts, I tended to a patient in tooth pain. She appeared to be homeless. She came into the emergency room around 3 or 4 a.m. My shift started earlier that night at 7 p.m. and I was tired. Nonetheless, I wanted to help and see what I can do to relieve her pain. I performed a dental block to numb her pain until she could go to a dentist for further diagnosis. However, during the procedure, I got distracted and accidentally stuck the needle--previously used on the patient--into my own finger. I found out months later that I contracted hepatitis. I started treatment, but the treatment (and my willingness to comply with treatment regimens) worked poorly. As a result, I ignored my condition and kept on working.

[5:15] Years later I am still working. I’m working a lot. I’m working mostly to stay away from home. My relationship was not doing well at the time and work allowed me to avoid confronting those issues. However, along the way, the condition of my hepatitis worsened. It worsened to a point where I could no longer ignore it and work despite it. One day, I went from working as a doctor to be becoming a patient myself. I realized that I needed to take my condition seriously. In order to so, I needed to stop working. The effects of treatment and medicine would not allow me to do otherwise. So I left work and started treatment. I had to take 8 pills and an injection every day. I was sick as a dog. This kind of treatment felt like having the flu every day. Meanwhile, during treatment, my marriage was still in decline.

[8:56] After having a huge argument with my ex, I had an epiphany. The argument acted as a catalyst for me.  I thought to myself, here I was fighting for my health and I had to ask myself (and her) if the relationship was worth salvaging. For me and my circumstances, I could die or live. It all depended on what I chose to do.

[12:07] From all appearances I had nothing. My relationship was going to end, I was no longer receiving sick time from my job, and my health was at one of it’s lowest points. I was devoid of everything. But then I decided to choose myself. I decided to choose me. I decided to take care of me and my well-being. In choosing to take care of myself, I had everything. For the first time in my life I chose me and there my consciousness began.

Heather Parady: Leaning into the Uncertainty

33m · Published 14 Feb 11:00

Good people,

On this episode, I had the pleasure of interviewing Heather Parady. Heather is a content coach and podcast host who teaches masterminds for those who want to start their own podcasts, and so much more. She is also the host of the Unconventional Leaders Podcast. Her business and podcast are built on saving time, preventing overwhelm, and helping people find true meaning in their work.

During our conversation, Heather combines her personal and professional truths, as this true affects all aspects of life. She delves into how she realized her personal and professional motivations were all based on seeking the external approval of others.

Now, she’s constantly working on rewiring her brain for the better, creating positive thoughts out of the negative ones.

Resources

The Path Made Clear by Oprah Winfrey

[5:25] Personal & Professional Truth: Heather combined her personal and professional truth: that many decisions in her life were (and are) fueled by response and a fear of rejection. She’s lived in fear of being alone and people not accepting the important decisions she makes, whether they relate to the personal or professional aspects of her life. Over the last couple of years, she’s made some major career shifts and taken leaps into things that are a little unconventional. Acknowledging the truth about her fear of rejection has taught her to listen to that still, small voice, and lean into things that scare her.

[8:19] Find Your Competitive Advantage: Heather talks to us about the concept that we’re all born with a sense of inferiority. In other words, we always feel that something’s a little off with us, whether it’s the way we look, how we grew up, or our relationships with our parents. Heather shares the idea, based off of psychologist Alfred Adler’s theories, that instead of fighting that thing, lean into it. Find out how it can be your competitive advantage. Use it to fuel your mission and find purpose in it. Heather believes that this thing that you think disqualifies you is actually the very thing that can qualify you to make the greatest impact. It’s what makes us human and drives connection.

[16:19] Rewire Your Brain: Heather and I talked a bit about neuroplasticity: the idea that your brain can be rewired. Your thought patterns can be rewired, changing the way you think. Of course, this is not an overnight thing; it’s more like a muscle that you have to grow and develop. Heather uses this concept to find a way to stop entertaining negative thoughts and start replacing those thought patterns with positive ones. It’s uncomfortable, but that’s an indicator that you’re really doing something right.

[25:05] Yes or BS:

  1. Anyone can be a podcaster.
  2. The role of wife is easier than the role of mother.
  3. The prototypical southern gentleman is still alive & well.
  4. College prepares you for adult life.
  5. There is too much content on the internet.
  6. There are just too many podcasters.
  7. Homeschooling is better than public schooling.
  8. Building a podcast audience is simple.
