#8 Using Laughter to Combat Life's Challenges with Bianca Spears Part 1

39m · Published 31 Jul 17:00

Bianca’s Bio

Bianca Spears is a Laughter Leader, Business Mentor and Award-winning Coach who helps people to create lives and businesses that they are wildly in love with. Her mission is to help people to access the joy, freedom and abundance they dream of through better utilizing the tools that they were born with; reconnecting them to their inner wisdom, bodies and breath.

She's helped entrepreneurs to establish brands and businesses that create a lasting impact on the world and a sustainable income. Her laughter work has helped thousands of people across the world to reduce pain, stress and anxiety, feel good and reprogram their minds and nervous systems to achieve happier, more fulfilling lives.

How did you discover laughter yoga and laughter wellness?

  • While working at a radio station, Bianca did a laughter yoga session.
  • She really enjoyed the training and immediately scheduled a training session.
  • A few years later, she decided to start studying laughter wellness.
  • Laughter wellness explores building positive energy.
  • Her work is all about creating sustainable change in people’s lives.

Why isn’t this more common?

  • Bianca hopes that coaching will become more like personal training, and everyone will know about it.
  • She hopes that laughter wellness and laughter yoga will become as popular as yoga is now.
  • It’s becoming more and more popular.

What is laughter yoga? And how can I implement it?

  • Laughter yoga involves clapping and chanting.
  • The clapping hits pressure points and the chanting massages your organs and helps you breathe deeply.
  • We also encourage and teach people to choose laughter.
  • If you can choose to laugh the same way you choose to breathe, you can get the benefits that come from laughter.
  • After a laughter yoga session, we do a laughter meditation session.
  • If you want to get started, take a look at youtube and you’ll find a lot of guided sessions.
  • It can be hard to want to do. It’s a lot like running in that way. Just make yourself do it and you’ll feel a lot better.
  • You can do it in the shower!

Benefits:

  • You’ll come back into balance in your nervous system.
  • Your digestive system will work better.
  • You’ll sleep better at night.
  • You’ll think more clearly.
  • You’ll have less stress.
  • Laughter can help you defuse emotion

Tell us about your experiences in building a business.

  • Bianca was completely overwhelmed with business. She was excited about the laughter therapy, but she dreaded the business side of it.
  • This caused her a lot of anxiety and stress.
  • It’s hard to start a business.
  • She started a laughter challenge and did facebook live laughter sessions.
  • This really shifted things for her.
  • Traditionally, we treat anxiety with talk therapy. This isn’t great for some people though because they’re sitting still and this can increase anxiety.
  • Laughter therapy can be incredibly effective to treat anxiety.

How can laughter therapy help in pregnancy and labor

  • Bianca used laughter therapy throughout her pregnancy.
  • It helped her with pain and morning sickness.
  • During her pregnancy, she researched laughter during labor.
  • During labor, she watched comedy and laughed through contractions. It was incredibly helpful.

#7 Empower Your Children - Insights from a Speech Therapist

29m · Published 24 Jul 17:00

Angie’s Bio

It takes a village to raise a child, especially as a working mom! Having a Speech Therapist like Angie in your village is incredibly helpful if your child is experiencing a speech delay. In this episode, Angie Hronek talks about what can indicate a speech delay, ways to help your child work through it, and how to be gentle with yourself as a parent.

How did you get into speech therapy?

  • When Angie was in high school, she had a cousin that was a speech therapist. She was helping her younger cousin say an “r” sound, and her cousin told her that she should become a speech therapist. Ever since that was the plan.
  • Angie got a bachelor's degree in speech and communication disorders at Utah State University.
  • She got her masters degree at the University of Utah.
  • After getting her masters degree, she went and worked in a school district which gave her a lot of experience.
  • In 2016, she decided to start doing private speech therapy. She really enjoyed being able to work with the child and parent together.

When should I be concerned about my child’s speech?

  • You can access speech services from the day a child is born.
  • Usually, you don’t need one right at birth, but there are definitely circumstances where speech skills are needed that early. For example, speech therapists often work with infants that don’t pass their newborn hearing screening or a child diagnosed with down syndrome.
  • From birth to one year, we usually focus on pre-language skills such as eye contact, social smiles, waving, gesturing…
  • After the first year, your baby will start babbling. The babbling should start to become more complex at about one year. If it isn’t, that’d be a great time to reach out to a language therapist.
  • The average one-year-old has between one and five words. Include animal sounds and sign language as words.
  • A word is anything that the child uses with intention, consistently, in the right context.
  • 18-month-olds: an average of 50 words.
  • 2 years old: an average of 1 to 200 words.

What about older children?

  • After 2 years old, kids will start to combine words into phrases. They should be using 2-word phrases.
  • At 3 years old, they should be able to use 3-word phrases.
  • At 4 years old, they should be able to use 4-word phrases.
  • At 2 years old, a stranger should be able to understand 50% of what they say.
  • At 3 years old, a stranger should be able to understand 75% of what they say.
  • At 4 years old, a stranger should be able to understand 100% of what they say.
  • If people aren’t able to understand them, it’s a good idea to get them looked at.
  • One way to test speech is to have them tell a story.
  • Can they tell a clear story with a beginning, middle, and end?
  • Is it difficult to listen to them and understand the story?

Do you have any words of encouragement to a parent of a child with a speech delay?

  • It’s not your fault. Often, people will say: “read them more books.” Usually, these parents ARE reading books. It’s usually not the parent’s fault.
  • You don’t have to do it alone. Reach out to resources. It takes a team to help these kids. Surround yourself with people that can help.
  • There’s only so much you can control on your own. Don’t be too hard on yourself.

How can you help your child avoid feeling “stupid” or shame?

  • Teach your kids that everyone has strengths and weaknesses. Just because they require extra effort to talk, it doesn’t mean they aren’t strong in other areas.
  • Help them identify the things they’re good at.
  • Never shame the kid. Instead, work to solve the problem together.
  • Show them progress! Anytime there is an improvement, point it out!

#6 - Pivoting Your Business & Embracing Change with Charlese Latham

27m · Published 17 Jul 18:30

Charlese Latham’s Bio

Charlese is currently a fun and thriving Virtual Assistant, but that wasn't her original plan.

After 20 years as a hairdresser, salon owner, and educator in the beauty industry on stages and for high-end stores like Nordstrom. Saks, Bloomingdales, and Sephora - Charlese was forced to change almost everything she knew about her life when she woke up one morning not able to walk.

Her mission statement

“To give female entrepreneurs the confidence to choose the life they want to live by focusing on the tasks they desire and delegating other projects to me. I’m more than an admin, I’m also a cheerleader for you and your business!”

Charlese is truly one of those empowered women who empowers other women! Learn more about her story here!

Have you always been a virtual assistant?

  • No. She started in the beauty industry.
  • She loved everything to do with the beauty industry.
  • Every once and a while, she would have friends reach out to her and ask her to help them with their businesses.
  • One day, she woke up and couldn’t walk anymore. She wasn’t paralyzed, but her nerves were so damaged that she couldn’t walk anymore.
  • She ended up in the hospital for emergency surgery.
  • She had to completely start over since she couldn’t stand on her feet all day in the salon anymore.
  • Now Charlese helps women coaches. Her business helps other businesses, and she gets a lot of strength from her business.

Dealing with difficulties and change

  • There were definitely hard days, but you have to keep hope and a positive attitude.
  • The entire time, Charlese kept reminding herself that she’d been through hard things before.
  • Celebrate the little wins.

What strategies did you use to support and motivate you to keep going?

  • Mantras are very helpful.
  • Aroma Therapy.
  • Music and songs. One song that impacted me a lot: Stronger by Kanye West
  • Post-it notes with positive messages.
  • People that helped and supported me.
  • Sometimes it is hard to let people help you, but you need to “let people love you.”

How did you transition from hairstylist to a virtual assistant?

  • This was really hard… she knew that her lifestyle needed to change.
  • She didn’t know what to do, but one day she saw an ad for a webinar about becoming a virtual assistant. She decided to join it.
  • She had spent time helping her friend with her business, and she now realized that there was a name for what she did.
  • She is naturally good at connecting with people.

How can you keep an open mind and be flexible

  • You need to start this thought process NOW
  • You need to have some plans and ideas on what to do just in case something happens.
  • Don’t stress yourself out, but entertain the questions: “what could I do if...:”
  • When you make backup plans you’ll be able to live life with a lot less stress.
  • Find the balance between preparing for the worst and preparing to work through the worst.
  • Be confident in yourself and your ability to be flexible.
  • Instead of getting stuck in the “what if” think “what could I do if”

#5 - Tips For Playing With Your Kids As A Working Mom with Courtney Rudolph

18m · Published 10 Jul 17:00

Courtney graduated from the University of Utah with her degree in Business in 2016. She started a summer kids camp when she was in 6th and 7th grade in her backyard and from then on she knew she wanted to be an entrepreneur. She worked at a Fortune 500 Company for several years in Real Estate and now is an account manager for a local telecommunications company. She is the Owner of Creative Change Connect and created the 30 Days of Play Workbooks to help busy parents spend less time searching and planning activities and more time playing with their kids! She is passionate about helping families to find new ways to connect and create new memories together!

Courtney’s Story

  • Courtney comes from an entrepreneurial family, and she has always loved business.
  • In 2016, her dad had a really bad accident, and half of his body became paralyzed. Since he wasn’t able to work anymore, Courtney decided to jump into building a business.
  • She started out by selling pacifier clips for toddlers.
  • In December of 2019, she decided to start a membership where she sold wholesale toys to parents.
  • When the COVID-19 pandemic hit, she saw an opportunity to help parents who now have their kids home.
  • She created the 30 Days of Play Workbook to help parents find activities to do with their kids.

Why is it important to play with your kids?

  • Playing is so important for kids. They learn a lot through being able to play.
  • It can be incredibly hard to spend quality time with your children, but it is incredibly important.
  • Unfortunately, there aren’t a lot of resources out there to help parents spend quality time with their kids.

What are some of your favorite activities?

  • In July, Courtney’s company is working on an activity that helps you with fantasy play with your children..
  • In this activity, you make a paper bag city, and then the kids can drive toy cars around.
  • She has also been really interested in sensory bins lately: especially for one and two year olds.

Tips to better play with your children

  • Find something YOU love to do and include your children
  • If you love to bake, invite them to the kitchen to help. Your child just wants to play with you, they don’t really care as much what you do.
  • Find things that your kids are interested in, and incorporate them into whatever you’re doing.
  • Do what you can do as a parent. Make adjustments as needed for your personal circumstances.
  • Every family is different. Don’t compare yourself to others.
  • Slowly work up to it. Play for just a few minutes and then slowly lengthen the time.

Tell us about your membership

  • The membership is $9.99/mo
  • 30 Days of Play Workbook: PDF file delivered to your inbox each month. The workbook includes a schedule, supply list, activities, coloring pages, printables, family date nights, ideas for play for 1-2 year olds and 6+.
  • You also get member benefits: We bring in parenting experts each month to give you videos and tips that you can reference. You also get exclusive discounts to our partner shops. We release a new toy each month!

#4 - How Your Personal Style Is An Extension Of Your Brand - With Fashion Stylist Laura Jane

42m · Published 03 Jul 17:51

Laura’s Bio:

Laura Jane is a Personal Stylist & Women’s Empowerment Coach based in London, UK, and is also known as The Girl. She is the founder and creator of Girl Behind The Look.

Laura specializes in working with female entrepreneurs to help transform their image so that they can have more impact and attract their potential clients, show them that they are experts within their fields, and get more sales so that they can make their desires and dreams come true.

Laura helps women to recognize who they are, what they are about so that they are empowered to be their true stylish versions of themselves and their brands. She does this by inspiring, empowering, and guiding them to feel confident about themselves, their wardrobe, style, and bodies using her EVOLUTION formula of unlocking themselves so that they can embrace their inner muse to become the goddess that they are and can start to glow from the inside out.

Her mantra is that everyone is beautiful no matter what shape or size they are and that every woman deserves to have their very own personal stylist.

With over 12 years of experience within the fashion industry, Laura’s work as a stylist has been featured in fashion magazines and she is very passionate about Body Positivity. In June 2017, she started Body Positivity and Confidence Week where she joined forces with some amazing guest speakers from Confidence Coaches to Nutritionists to Plus Size Bloggers who shared their stories on these topics to help women feel confident about themselves. In January 2018, Laura became a Body Image Movement Global Ambassador.

How did you come to be a fashion stylist?

  • Laura came to London to study product design and development at the London College of Fashion.
  • In her final year, she created a collection that didn’t discriminate against women.
  • After graduation, she became a fashion buyer for a British retailer. She sourced collections from around the world so that the store could sell them.
  • She felt that something was missing in this job.
  • After talking with someone living in the same house as her, she decided to be an assistant to a stylist at a photoshoot.
  • From that moment on, she kept fashion styling as a side gig to her full-time job.
  • She became a victim of the fashion industry. She was bullied, and her confidence was hurt. She decided to quit.
  • Later, she reflected and decided that she had let them win. She missed styling, and she wanted to make a difference in helping women feel more confident.
  • She became a personal stylist.
  • After talking with a brand expert, she decided to niche down her business, and now she works exclusively with female entrepreneurs.

How can female professionals use personal styling in their brands?

  • Your personal style is important.
  • Unfortunately, many women forget about this as part of their brand identity.
  • Your personal style is an extension of your brand.
  • Your personal style is a secret weapon.

How can I identify my personal style?

  • Start with self-discovery. Who are you? Who do you want to be? Get to know yourself. What do you like? What are your values?
  • Journaling and meditation can help you identify your personal style.
  • Everyone has a style goddess within them. Unfortunately, we often suppress them. Release your inner goddess!
  • Create a business uniform so that you already know what to wear.
  • Be the stylish CEO.
  • Know who you are so you can step into the role of CEO.
  • Create a wardrobe that works for you.

How to practice body positivity

  • Whether you realize it or not, we all “self-talk.”
  • Make sure that your self-talk is positive. Find at least one thing to compliment yourself on each day.
  • When you say negative things to yourself, recognize the negative self-talk, and correct it.
  • Give yourself a pep talk when you need one. Look yourself in the mirror and say positive things to yourself.
  • Don’t feel horrible if you need to get some clothes altered.
  • Buy the clothes that fit you NOW. You’ll look better and feel better.

How can we apply these ideas in a business setting?

  • Be yourself! Be authentic!
  • People will want to buy from you if they align with you.
  • Who says you need to do things a certain way? Be who you are!

#3 - Empowering Women with Education and Support during their Breastfeeding Journey with Anna Burch

30m · Published 26 Jun 17:00

Anna’s Bio:

Anna Burch is a Registered Nurse, International Board Certified Lactation Consultant, and mom of three (including twins). She loves to help women breastfeed with confidence.

Anna’s Story:

  • Ever since Anna was 12, she knew she wanted to be a nurse and work in women’s health.
  • Originally, she wanted to be a labor and delivery nurse.
  • When she graduated, there were more nurses graduating than the demand.
  • Instead of getting a job in a hospital, she went to work in an OBGYN office.
  • In this job, she worked with a lot of postpartum moms and found that a lot of people struggle with breastfeeding and that there is a lot of misinformation out there.
  • During this time, Anna didn’t have kids and struggled with fertility.
  • She started her education just after finding out that she was pregnant.
  • After her daughter was born, she got certified and launched her company: Prenatal Insights.
  • Her business has grown slowly since she’s focused on being a Mom at the same time.

Why is there not more information if women have been breastfeeding for so long?

  • In past generations, the upper class wouldn’t breastfeed. They would hire a wet nurse to feed their baby.
  • For some reason, it was looked down upon to breastfeed.
  • Even more recently, formula companies advertised and a lot of people stopped breastfeeding and transitioned to formula.
  • There still is a stigma about breastfeeding.
  • Breast milk is an incredible substance and provides so many nutrients.
  • Anna isn’t against formula. There are many reasons why a mom would choose to go with formula, and there are a lot of good formulas out there.

Why are we seeing movements to make breastfeeding more acceptable?

  • Because of the internet and social media, there are a lot of platforms for people to support breastfeeding mothers.
  • It is now legal to breastfeed your baby in public places in all 50 states.

How to deal with people that don’t want you to breastfeed in public?

  • Do whatever makes it easier for you to breastfeed.
  • If people around you are uncomfortable, it’s not your problem. It’s up to you if you want to make changes to help them be more comfortable.
  • Don’t let people shame you or pressure you.
  • It’s more important that your baby gets fed than that other people feel comfortable.

Tips for expecting moms

  • Get some education.
  • Expecting moms prepare for so many things. Often, we work on creating a perfect nursery.
  • Just as important as this, is preparing and deciding what you are going to do about breastfeeding.
  • Breastfeeding is almost like a full-time job during your babies first year. You need to be trained for this “job.”
  • One resource available is Anna’s online course: https://prenatalinsights.com/online-courses/ - 10% off the Course! BFW10

Any Breastfeeding is a success

  • Many women feel like a failure if breastfeeding doesn’t work out, or if they don’t do it as long as they would have liked.
  • Any breastfeeding that you do is a success.
  • It’s okay to mourn the loss of breastfeeding, but anything you did was a success.

#2 - Knowing when it's time to hire out tasks with Abby Combs

30m · Published 19 Jun 17:00

About Abby

Abby is a wife, a mother of three, plus one angel in heaven and the owner of E-Studios, a marketing firm. Abby thrives in marriage, motherhood, sisterhood, friendships and business ownership with a big diet coke in hand. Abby loves people and has found a passion in helping small to medium sized businesses with all things marketing. She loves Reeses Peanut Butter Cups - regular or king sized, (she doesn’t like the thins), exercising, tropical vacations, the sunshine, and above all else, her family.

Abby’s Story

Abby worked for a small business in 2016 just after losing her angel baby, Easton. Her older kids were in school, and she had some extra time. Her friend asked her to help with her small business, and asked her to help with trade shows. While she originally started as a bookkeeper, she quickly took on a lot of responsibilities at the company, and worked in a lot of different roles. Her main focus became marketing where she worked with influencers, email automation, website, and social media management. Abby quickly learned, and excelled in marketing. During her time at that company, she had another baby, and continued working part-time. As the company grew, the company needed a full-time marketing manager. She decided to stay home. She quickly realized that she missed working. She decided to start helping small businesses with their marketing. She now runs E-Studios and helps small businesses with their marketing.

When should I get help with Social Media Management?

  • If you’re starting to ask the question, it’s probably time to outsource.
  • If you are the creative mind, you need to find someone that can implement the strategy behind the scenes.
  • Find someone that understands your business, and can see the vision.

How can hiring a marketing manager help a business?

  • Having a second set of eyes on your business is incredibly helpful.
  • Abby often will look at a client’s website and give them feedback to make sure that they are creating a good customer experience.
  • The little details make a big difference to your customer experience. It’s important to have someone come in that understands marketing and can brainstorm with you.
  • Marketing managers can also take a lot of tedious tasks off your plate and help you implement your ideas and strategy.

What are the differences between a marketing manager and a virtual assistant?

  • A virtual assistant helps you execute tasks. A good virtual assistant can help you get things done, but it requires you to create a list of tasks for them to do.
  • A marketing manager can also help with tasks, but they should also be able to help with the strategy and create tasks for themselves.
  • In my business, we create a marketing calendar that includes all of the tasks, posts, emails, etc.

How should we choose a marketing manager?

  • Figure out your goals and dreams for your business.
  • Find the things that you love to do, and the things that you don’t enjoy doing. Outsource the things you don’t like doing.
  • You need to find someone that you “vibe” with. They should be the type of person you could spend time with and be friends with.
  • It’s okay to say no to a marketing manager. You need to find one that’s right for you.
  • Make sure that you look at a resume or portfolio.

How do you balance your business and personal life?

  • Balancing a business and a family is incredibly hard!
  • Work with your family to decide on the best dynamic for you. In Abby’s case, Being a wife and mother is important, but Abby felt a little empty, and needed to do other things to feel fulfilled.
  • She worked closely with her husband to decide on the best way to balance her work and being a wife and mother.
  • As your business grows, you have to learn to balance everything. Hiring out help in the home is okay, and can really help you grow.
  • It’s okay to want to be more than one thing. It’s okay to be a business owner AND mother.
  • Put your needs first a few hours a day.

What are some tips that we can implement in our social media?

  • Everyone, and every business is a little different.
  • First, decide if you want to be on social media. It’s not for everyone. There are other ways to market your business if it brings you stress.
  • Don’t worry about the numbers. Don’t worry about the likes or followers. Engagement is more important than numbers.
  • When you are on social media, focus on relationships and real conversations.

#1 - Get to know your Host and a few tips about Branding

18m · Published 15 Jun 12:00

Welcome to the Branding for Women Podcast! This is THE place to connect with and learn from other female entrepreneurs. I’m your host, Karely Brinton, and I’m so excited to have you here!

About Karely

Karely Brinton is a soft spoken, Josh Groban loving, professional branding designer. Her goal is to make our world a better place to live by creating beautiful and effective brand identities for female owned businesses. She has a Bachelor’s degree in design and a background in psychology that allows her to create unique visual messages that speak directly to her client’s dream customers! Although she may be soft spoken, she values authenticity and loves to vibrantly and truthfully show off her client’s unique beautiful personalities and natural talents! You can connect with her on her instagram profile @brandingforwomen or on her website, www.brandingforwomen.com.

What led Karely to become a graphic designer?

  • Karely always wanted to be a mom. In high school, everyone pressures you to find a career path… unfortunately, a mom isn’t an acceptable answer. She decided to become a nurse, but soon found that it wasn’t the career for her.
  • With a surprising amount of support and encouragement from her family, she decided to take the leap and pursue a career in something she has always loved to do - design!
  • She uses her talents to make the community around us more beautiful, especially on the commercial front - no more ugly signs!

Why should you hire a graphic designer instead of doing it yourself?

  • There are a lot of tools that allow you to create business assets.
  • That said, think of it like getting your hair or makeup done. Of course, you can do it yourself, but on important occasions (like a wedding), most people will choose to hire a professional.
  • I recommend the same for your business. If you hire a professional, your business and brand will be presented in the BEST way.

What should you look for in a graphic designer?

  • You want to choose a designer that has a natural affinity to your style and vision.
  • Make sure they are a professional when viewing their portfolio. Do they know the difference between good and poor design?

What do my branding packages look like?

  • Graphic design as an important and necessary investment for your business.
  • While good design can sometimes feel like a BIG investment - consider the cost of bad design! Poor design = confusion, misunderstanding, and repelling potential customers.
  • Packages:
  • - Establish the foundation of your brand message and mission
  • - Start adding in purposefully designed elements such as logo, business cards, and other visuals
  • - Website design
  • All packages have payment plans to make the investment easier to navigate for new entrepreneurs
  • I also offer Brand Audits where I’ll look at your current brand and recommend improvements.

Advice for others thinking about a career in graphic design

  • There are many resources and courses these days that you can take in place of a 4 year degree. But a formal education is worth it by giving you the opportunity to learn face to face with professional and successful designers.
  • If you decide to take courses online, choose carefully. Find courses and instructors that you can relate with.
  • If you wouldn’t trade places with them, don’t take a course from them.
